Well we're sorry to say..... we're still on Recovery. Not sure what's gone wrong. She's turning her nose up at everything. Not even taking SPOON fed blended chicken livers with blended burgers. (It looks like baby food, but smells OK, thought it would be doggy heaven).

Couple of suggestion from friends, perhaps she's constipated ? But we are getting small poos. Perhaps it's her teeth? Mistletoe was due for a dentist visit before all this began. And her breath is really smelly. We were putting her bad breath down to meds and human food. She is still interested in the cooking smells, just not when we try to feed her.

Spoke with vet yesterday, thinking now that she's off Tramidol, her pain relief is to low. Vet has said to persist with human food over next few days, but seeing Mistletoe losing weight is starting to worry me greatly.

Any suggestions or comments. Speaking to vet tomorrow to arrange a dentist appointment.

Hmmm....It sou ds like she's "I terested" in food, but then turns away like she's nauseous???

Have you tried Cerenia?? It's an anti nnausea med and is usually pretty effective.

How is her overall attitude??? Cos she act like she's in pain? If I recall from your previous lost she was off her pain meds after about two or three weeks a dd was doi g very well without them.

Is she drinking water okay? Sometimes a dose of SubQ fluids he@ps stimulate appetite even if they don't seem particular dehydrated.

Is it possible she has a fever or infection from ner teeth? Perhaps an antibiotic would help. I knkw you don't want to put her under for tooth surgery this soon after her major surgery unless ABSOLUTELY necessary. There is an antibiotic I just saw in Murphy's blog that helps fight gum infections if surgery isn't the best option.

Certainly take her in for a check up, maybe some bloodwork, but DEFINITELY ask about the Cerenia.

Give that snuggle big a hug for us! She's so darn cute!

Hugs!

Oh I am sorry to hear this, Fiona. It's so distressing when they don't eat. Ditto Sally's suggestions, certainly. What meds is Mistletoe on on now? I am wondering about her teeth, given that she's interested in smells but can't face actually eating. Have you tried totally bland food too? Someone (Katie, I think?) recently found their dog would only eat Ritz crackers. Perhaps worth a try? But definitely speak to the vet for sure and see if they can prescribe something to help.

Do hope she's feeling better soon and ready to tuck into some home cooking...

All best,

Thank you, completely right, interested in all that is going on around her, food getting prepared, people coming in, her 2 kitten babies. She's just like her own self, back into morning routine, up, water bowl, then out for a pee. Wdenesday, the first day of not eating, she cuddled up with me on the sofa, she's not done that since surgery. Really was believing we were getting back to some form of NORMAL.

Haven't heard about Cerenia, will do a google on that, also need to look up Murphy's blog.

Mistletoe is drinking plenty of water, out of her own bowl, ( it's on stilts, no bending, as is her food bowl) .

Teeth -   I really thought it was the meds that was causing the problem of bad breath.  No one want to put their baby under an anesthetic, and you're right, too soon after surgery.

You don't think she has constipation ?

Thanks

Hi Meg and Clare.

We thought we we're doing quite well with the meds.

Mistletoe has been Tramidol free since last Friday. Eating really well over the weekend, 2 of those tinfoil ceasar for small dogs, (more than she's been eating in 1 go).

At the moment she's getting

Rimadol x 100mg in the morning and 50mg in the evening.

Does homemade chips come into bland food!!!

Has anyone else dealt with bad breath, it's REALLY bad ?

Thanks

How long has she been on the rimadyl?  Those NSAIDs can cause stomach upset....just to throw another wrinkle at youbig-grin

Since she doesn't seem nauseated but won't eat, combined with the bad breath leads me to believe a tooth problem.  While Maggie was doing her chemo we couldn't do a dental and her breath was horrible.  When I finally was able to have her mouth looked at she ended up having several teeth pulled.

Murphy was taking Clindamycin twice a day X 10 days every month.  They made him nauseas, so I added a zantac to each dose.  It's an old-school remedy to kill the bacteria in his mouth.  His breath was horrid.  His teeth were really getting bad, his gums red and he started losing a couple of the teeth in the front.  Our vet had wanted to do a cleaning, but I had declined since I was sure that there was probably some lung mets.  Well last month we did some x-rays & his lungs were clear, so we decided to go ahead with the dental cleaning.  He just had it done yesterday.  It was difficult to have him go under anesthesia.  They had to pull 9 teeth sad.  He came home with Tramadol for pain, which seemed pretty bad yesterday, but I'm already seeing an improvement today.

fighting4duke, thanks for chiming in and sharing. Please consider starting a new topic so we can follow along and help you OK? We hope Duke starts feeling better soon. As for water, have you tried spiking it with no-salt broth, gatorade, tuna water or anything like that?

Not good news .................

kidneys not working very well. Mistletoe is now in the vets for 3 days, on a fluid drip. Hopefully that will get rid of all of the toxins out of her system... and hopefully get her home fighting.

Teeth, not good as well..................

I'm sorry to post such a sad up-date.

Oh my gosh!!! To have this pop up while she's trying to recover just rotten!!

The recovery process itself can mask so many things, especially when it comes to not eating!! Not eating during recovery is so very often related to nkt feeling like eating because of pain meds or the surgery itself. So sorry you are dealing with this!!

Do they have any idea of the cause? Obviously they did blood work-up before surgery and their were no issues then.

A constant influx of fluids can work miracles in situations like this! They will make her feel better too and feel like eating soon.

PLEASE KNOW THAT WE ARE HERE FOR YOU AND WITH YOU!!! We are mustering up all the healing positive energy of your Tripawd Family and sending it to MISTLETOE!!! Come on MISTLETOE! We're all pulling for you like crazy!!

Not sure if it works the same in dogs, but kidney issues in cats make them nauseous. We were given an appetite stimulant which did help. My dog is on Pepcid AC twice a day and sucralate. I know his tummy gets upset with the meds. I am so sorry Mistletoe is having such a hard time, but it's good she is at the vets. We are all pulling for her!
