I like to be prepared.,, and I dont always take the first choice my onco vet offers,,, Of course,, sometimes I read something and my onco vet explains why this or tht wont work,

Today, I read that thalidomide is useful to prevent mets in lungs for dogs with osteo,. ( for those unsure of metronomics ,, you use a low dose cancer drug,, plus another drug to make it work better,,, like an NSaid piroxicam is often listed,,)  anyone using thalidomide as the second drug that goes with the low dose cancer drug daily, etc,,?

I see that cyclophsophamide is the cancer drug most used in metronomics ,,  Anyone using this?? any other meds being used?

this list is all about new and exciting options, plus what works well with best outcome and less side effects,, etc,, ,  looking to see what others are doing.   any new vet journal articles from 2018?  ( I only saw 2017,,  and things are changing)

My interest is peaked as I wont be able to get the vaccine for simon,, so I need to do the very best I can in alternatives to the vaccine,,

Hi Luke and Simon 🐾

I am traveling so do not have access to Eurydice's file but I do remember she took cyclophosphamide, metacam and an antibiotic (can't remember the name) daily.

I will be back Sunday so let me know if you still want to know the name of the antibiotic, when I'm home I can check it out and tell you.

Eurydice had zero side effects, we did regular urine and blood tests and she pursued this treatment for about 1 1/2 months but then we had a PET scan done at 6 months after amputation and that showed 4 little tumours (of a couple of mm each) so we stopped metronomics and switched to IV doxorubicin.

Having said this, lots of dogs do really well and do not develop mets whilst on metronomics .

Paula (Nitro's Mom) is one of the examples, PM her if you want more specific details as Nitro was on metro for 3 years if my memory is not failing me.

Hugs and cuddles 😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

After Carboplatin and Palladia, Rocky started metronomics . He had an injection of Mitoxantrone followed with Leukeran. He was supposed to get the Mitoxantrone every three weeks and the Leukeran was given orally daily.

His cancer had gotten aggressive at the end, and we weren't sure there was enough time for the Leukeran to work which is why the Mitoxantrone was added. The hope was the Mitoxantrone would hold it off until the Leukeran kicked in.

Unfortunately, the cancer  broke one of Rocky's remaining legs three days into starting the metro.

David and Rocky (and Baxter now too!)

Rocky had his right front leg amputated on Valentine's Day 2017 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

He joined the September Saints on September 3, 2017.

He is the toughest, bravest, sweetest and best friend I'll ever know.

Luke, please see my answer to this question you posted in your other topic:

http://tripawds.....for-simon/

Regarding metronomics :

Are there other chemo agents that work as well as cyc but dont cause the hemmirghaic cystitis?  Any additional med to take to help prevent the hc from occuring?

Possibly. Cystitis is far more common in female dogs, males rarely get it. Poor Nitro had the bad luck of being one of them, but we rarely see it here in boy dogs.

Teresa, and Luke, yes, there is an alternative drug for metronomics but it's expensive now. It's also less studied, which is why Eurydice's oncologist may not have suggested it.

Not sure if I showed you this before but here is another article with the most current metronomics choices as far as we are aware:

Oddly enough, Holly just posted in her blog that she is being switched from Cytoxan to Chlorambucil. See:

thanks Jerry for the 2017 update.  quite helpful and always good to see recent data and what is being looked at currently.

I'm trying to imagine , hope,, etc  that new courses of metronomics with all the bells and whistles ,, might be  a decent alternative to the vaccine?
