Max is scheduled for his first chemo tomorrow.  Sure am hoping everything goes as well for that as it has for the amp recovery so far.  We have the Cerenia for nausea to give him the morning of chemo so hopefully that will help.  His incision is looking good, the seroma is not leaking anymore and that spot is healing up from underneath.  There is a small slit still there but closing fast.  He sure is our little rock star.  His mobility is awesome and he gets around like he's been doing it forever.  I was able to get away for an overnight trip this weekend with 3 of my girlfriends so I'm all recharged and ready to go forward again.  Bob is hoping to be able to take Max back to his house by this weekend.  (I'm sure staying with "mom" 3 weeks wasn't tops on his list of fun things to do but we needed to do this together.)  I'm sure he's more than ready to get back to his own routine and in his own home.  laughing

Hi Linda, crossing our paws for you tomorrow. How long will you be at the vets, do you know? I'm sure he will get through this like the champ he is.

Paula and Nitro

Nitro 11 1/2  yr old Doberman; right front amp June 2014. Had 6 doses carboplatin, followed by metronomic therapy. Rocked it on 3 legs for over 3 years! My Warrior beat cancer, but couldn't beat old age. He crossed the Bridge peacefully on July 25, 2017, with dignity and on his terms.  Follow his blog entitled "Doberman's journey"

Thanks Paula.  I don't know how long.  Guess that's one question we forgot to ask.  Bob is taking him alone tomorrow, I'm staying at home for a little quality time with my own two furfaces.  Riley (the collie) needs a good brushing and both he and Ollie needs cuddle time.  I feel they've been somewhat neglected these last three weeks and I'm sure they will like some extra attention with just me.  Another question we didn't ask is do we feed him the morning of chemo?  Maybe you know the answer to that because you've been through it with Nitro.  The vet was going to call today but didn't hear from him so I wanted to ask that question and also ask if he should stay on his antibiotics.  He's got 4 1/2 days to go on them but I was wondering if they interfere with chemo.  Guess we may have to call in the morning to get those answers.   It's funny I went back and read all my posts and the support from this whole community from the first day forward and wow what a journey this has been.  Despair to hope to making the decision to amputate, those first few days and all that came after.  How far we've come and how much we've learned.  Everybody's advice and support have meant the world to me.  I've said it before but truly I could not have done it without you guys!!  I thank each and every one of you!

And yes, you HAVE come sooo far, as has Max! Lovely to watch!

I was able to take Happy Hannah and. sit and wait. The whole process probably didn't take more than 30 -45 minutes. Quite frankly, I don't remember any specific instructions on not feeding her...so no help there. And check about the antibiotics too. Again, no insight there either. Big help, right?winker

Glad you had a little break this week end. You have been a tremendous support to Bob and Max. Even though they'll be glad to get home, I'm sure Max is going to miss all of Grandma's attention and being with his doggy cousins. Conversely, your pups will be thrilled to have all your attention again!

Sooooooo glad things are voing well for Max. The recovery is so scary...this whole process is so scary! Once you start to see the sparkle back though, it's all worth it!

Update us when you can.

Love and hugs to all!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

We knew you could do it! Congrats on traveling the long road and with such strength, you guys are doing great!

Since we didn't do chemo I don't know the answer to whether or not to feed him, so let us know what you learn OK? Best wishes to you guys, keep us posted.

The e-mail with the answers to my questions from the vet was as follows:

You may feed a light meal early on the day of chemo.  You don't want a full meal in them in case of vomiting.

Ok to give antibiotics while on chemo.

We just gave Max a little extra chicken with his pills this morning so he had something in his tummy for the pills to work with.

I'll keep you posted on how it goes the next few days.

Well so far so good.  Max got his chemo yesterday and so far no vomiting or bowel issues.  He's been eating normally too.  His energy level seems less than normal which Paula said is typical.  Normally he's quite high strung but the last two days he's been stretched out resting pretty much all day except for his potty breaks.  This is NOT the normal Max but I'm ok with it.  Obviously his body is telling him take it easy.  We've been monitoring his temp daily and so far it's normal.  His incision is healed and no more cone for him at night. That is good news because he HATES the cone.   We have to take him in 10-14 days for a blood check and then again one day before his next scheduled chemo.  Is that the normal?  Will he always need two blood checks between chemo's or is this first one to get an idea how he handles it?  I didn't go with Bob and he didn't ask.  On the downside Bob is planning on taking him home after work on Friday.  Grandma's going to miss him but birds gotta fly.  My life has revolved around Max these last three weeks so guess I'll have a big hole to plug when he's not here.  But both Bob and Max need to get back to their own routine and home too.  They have lives to live and plans to make and things to do.  I do think I'll try to talk him into bringing Max here while he works (his shift is 1-10 each day) for a few days after each chemo just to keep an eye on him for those couple of days to make sure he doesn't have a reaction.  This has been one heck of a journey with Bob and I leaning on each other and this whole community for support.   I plan on staying here and hopefully being support for others.  Hopefully I can help others through this the way you all have helped me and also give updates on Max.  THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!

Bob, Max and Linda

Alrighty, one chemo out of the way! Max sounds like he's doing just fine. The whole ordeal wears them out not to mention the chemo alone can make a doggy as vivacious as Max feel a little tired!!

Hope Bob agrees to let Max stay with you a few days after each chemo. Not because of any particular concerns, but because you and Max would very much enjoy each other's company!

I only recall Happy Hannah going in once for bloodwork before the next chemo, not twice. Not sure why one the day before Max's chemo is required. May have been a misunderstanding or there may be a reason. Maybe Happy Hannah had one the day before and I just don't remember.

Cone is off!! YAHOO! I know he's loving having that thing gone!!

And Linda, you ARE contributing by chronicling Max's journey here for others to follow. From the uncertainty of what to do, to the decision to proceed with amputation and now sharing the victory of watching Max get on with living his life to the fullest!

Thank you for allowing us the privilege to be on this journey with you, Bob and Mighty Max!

Love!

Hi Linda, not sure why the two blood draws, Nitro only had them on the day of chemo. Glad he's doing good so far, and I'm sure he will miss "grandma" as much as she'll miss him!

sleepyYay Max! Glad to hear chemo went well. 🙂 I'm not sure either about the two blood draws, Murphy only had one at his first chemo session.  I'm glad to hear your seroma is healed too!

Murphy, became a tripawd on August 17, 2015. Went to the rainbow bridge on July 5, 2016.
