Anyone have experience with radiating a MCT and having it absolutely REEK? Seriously, I think Izzy's foot is rotting away. Could that be the tumor dying? (It sure doesn't seem to be shrinking, just STINKING!)

Momma to the world's most beautiful American Bulldog, Izzy!! Lost her front leg to OSA 9/18/15. Diagnosed w MCT in June 2016. Celebrated her 1 year ampuversary with knee surgery on 9/18/16! MCT recurrence in Dec 2016. Happy & hungry til nearly 14, earning her wings on 7/31/17.

Jave no clue; HOWEVER, it certainly would make sense that the smell is from it dying and rotting away from the inside out!

We'll see if others have experience with it.

Hoping STINKING will soon translate into SHRINKING! 🙂

Oh wow, that's interesting. I do hope that means it's shrinking too. What does Izzy's vet say?

Vet doesn't have much to say. We've had 4 doses of radiation and it's no smaller. They started an antibiotic as the foot must be infected to smell like that ... it's ROTTEN. It's actually looking black in a spot now. Ugh.

Last radiation is Monday and her regular onco - who I love - sees her on Tuesday. I'll be sure to update but I sure don't think that's normal lol

Izzzzzzy! Congrats on getting four sessions under your belt! Good for you Miss Pink Princess Warrior! One thing to keep in mind is that radiation starts working WHEN the tumor cells start replicating. So...since there is a differential for each tumor, you may not see shrinkage for awhile. In other words it may not shrink (at first), but will definitely not grow. (For Emma Rose, this meant that her brain stem nerve sheath tumor was still "active" for another 8 weeks POST her 5 SRT treatments. Now we are hoping it is shrinking but there is now way to tell w/o additional imaging...which we are not doing because, really, why?) Maybe Izzy's skin is more sensitive to the treatments now due to the infection. Bless her heart! She really must think the vets are idiots to not figure it out for her yet! No matter, Izzy is STILL the Queen of the Pink and the Belle of the Ball. You hang in there Izzy!!! Hugs, best wishes, and PyrPaws all around!

PS.........Knowing how dogs love stinky stuff, Izzy probably thinks she has on the finest perfume in the land! 🙂

Here is a much more eloquent explanation from the American Cancer Society:

( And thanks Sally! Happy to share and be here. I never would have known this unless my new BFF and Head of Neurology had explained this to me.)

This is great info! Izzy's tumor actually looks a bit bigger and she is routinely pulling her foot away during cleaning or a bandage change. She's on 300 mg of Gabapentin 3x a day - this is a much higher dose than she had after amputation and also after her knee surgery - but she is still feeling pain. Last week, she was not pulling away.

I am going to hope that this means the radiation is doing something ... I will be patient but I also have plans to speak to her primary onco about final preparations. I don't want her hurting but it sounds like I need to give it some time, maybe a few weeks even, but if this thing gets any bigger ... I want to cry every time I see it. I can't imagine how *she* feels!

I'll let you know what the docs say!

Is she exhibiting pain any other way, or just when you mess with her leg? Pulling away may not necessarily be pain as much as she doesn't want to be "messed" with. She may simply be watching your "reaction" and sensing your energy as being "upset" when you see the leg. So she pulls the leg away so you wontw be upset. Okay, a wild theory, but just throwing it out there.

You know we all have paws crossed for our sweet Izzy! And you are such an extraordinary caregiver!! 🙂 You have been through a lot, that's for sure, but you ALWAYS do what's best for Izzy......and yiru always will.

So we've seen two oncologists in two days and I have to say this out loud ... I am SO GLAD that we've been going to Triangle Veterinary and not State this whole time. Of course, I am thankful that State had the radiation facility, but man, there's just such a huge difference in the quality of care.

Izzy's smelly, green, oozing foot - while understandably alarming - is fine. She's been on antibiotics for three days and I know that has really helped the smell, but Izzy's oncologist explained today that what we are seeing is NORMAL and the green/gray nastiness is bits of the tumor dying. She said not to be alarmed if pieces come off in "chunks" ... the tumor is softer, which is generally a sign that cells inside of it are dying, so I should expect to see some shrinking in the next couple weeks or so.

My question is this: why in the hell wouldn't the treating Radiation Oncologist share that same information? *I* am not a doctor, so I have to rely on those folks with the DVM degree to interpret for me!

At the end of the day, I'm just glad Izzy got a good report. In fact - and this is a direct quote from her treatment summary - the doctor was so pleased with her condition and "Izzy has lost .8 kg since her last exam here so I felt completely justified in feeding her anything she wanted all day long!"  clap

Trust me when I say, so took them up on the offer. Her "nurse" warned me that she probably gained 5 lbs TODAY from all the food! That said, she barked at me in the lobby when I wouldn't give her all FOUR of the treats he handed me (they'd never heard her bark in the nearly 2 years she's been under their care) and she is standing here, sassing me at this very moment as she's had to wait to eat after gorging herself all day.

All in all, we are cautiously optimistic that her tumor will lessen a bit and her toe won't be so uncomfortably pushed out from her foot. Paws crossed and the spoiling will continue! heart

You are all so awesome! Thank you for all of the enthusiasm and paws-itive energy! I'm hoping Izzy and I can make the party so I'll keep my fingers crossed and start doing some real planning. We are continuing with vinblastine in the hope that the radiation weakened the tumor defenses and we'll get somewhere with this thing.

I'll keep you posted and hopefully can get photobucket working again - I've tons of pics of miss sassypants to share big-grin

Look at that beauty!

Still so in love with my pup. She's the cutest thing ever! Izzy's tumor is hanging tough, dammit. It's weepy and maybe the tiniest bit smaller but overall much the same. Izzy has lost a few lbs over the past month and her onco just pushed her next chemo treatment out, so it will be 3 weeks before we go back. I'm betting the weight loss is why ... she otherwise looks pretty good. I think long term prednisone is taking its toll; she gets winded immediately and all her muscle is wasting away. I get sad because hearts are pure muscle. I worry about hers ... and mine.

The "good" news is that there's not really any scary bad news from the vet. I ordered a protein supplement to see if that helps with the muscle loss and will report back to everyone if we see "gainz" lol

Hope everyone is well!! Izzy sends lots of kisses so watch out - she licked her surgeon's eyeball on Tuesday! So vicious n delicious! 🙂

Oh Izzy! I almost kissed my computer screen to give you a big smooch on that nose of yours! I only just stopped myself because my colleague was looking at me funny... I was kind of hoping for new fashion tips from you actually. What's up with that??

Izzy, we'll go with the "no news is good news" wisdom and  are hoping that we'll see you in VA!!!

Biggest hugs and kisses
