I'm not sure if I'm doing this correctly - if I'm supposed to add a new topic or just add to the blog or reply to the previous topic - so if this isn't correct, please tell me!
I dropped Mads off at 7 a.m. and she was pretty chill because she got some tranquilizers at 5:00 a.m. to help her with her anxiety.  They said she was the first surgery but I didn't hear anything by noon so I called and there was no one available to talk to me!  Talk about ANXIETY!  Anyway, the surgeon called me back a little while later and told me that Maddie came thru surgery well, that it was completely routine - no surprises.  He sent the bone (obviously) and a lymph node for biopsy but said the lymph node looked normal to him.  He also told me that she is going to come home with the same meds she has been on because he used a long-acting anesthetic (this was a surprise because we never talked about it).  He said he felt that it gives better pain management and helps reduce the amount of narcotics she will need to be on.  I'm hoping someone here knows what that's about!!!  He apologized because I guess it costs a bit more - but said he thought it was the right thing for her.  I told him I'm fine with that as long as it makes her as comfortable and pain free is possible.  He said I should call back later today and then he will call me first thing in the a.m.  At this point he doesn't know whether she'll be able to come home tomorrow or will need to stay till Thursday - all depends on how she is doing.  I'm okay with that - I just want her to be comfortable and calm and in the best possible situation.  What a relief!  The first hurdle has been cleared!!!!!  Thank you all for your words of encouragement and support!!

Fantastic, you do whatever works best for you! There is just no need to duplicate your efforts. Some members prefer to use their Tripawds Blogs , others never leave the forums. Ideally, you can reach everypawdy by posting blog updates. Then creating a forum topic which you can then just reply to with a link each time you post an update. But again, whatever is easiest and you are most comfortable doing is the "correct" way.

In general, if you have an important update you would like to share that warrants its own discussion, then by all means, create a new topic. When checking in to share some news or new photos, reply to an existing topic if you already started one. You might also consider adding a link to your signature from your Forums profile so others always know where to find your blog.

Hope this helps! Feel free to search or post in the Tech Support forum with any specific for additional assistance.

thanks for all the well wishes!!  I just talked to the hospital and the tech said she's doing okay.  Had became a little anxious so they gave her more anti-anxiety meds and she's calm now.  She has pee'd already but hasn't eaten yet.  The tech said she will try again at 10.  They've examined her incision and all looks good, she doesn't seem painful and she's now resting comfortably.  Yay!  I know this is just the first challenge but it's the biggest I think 🙂  I miss her so much but know she's much better off there where they can take care of her.  Her doggie brother misses her too.

Well done Maddie!! Please let us know how she's doing post op when you have a chance. This is my first post and like Maddie's person I'm not quite sure how internet forums work. My 7 year 11 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback was diagnosed with bone cancer yesterday after I insisted that he be referred to the specialist who performed spinal decompression surgery on his older sister last week. (It has been a tough few weeks) My regular vet (now former vet) has had him on rimadyl for three weeks with no improvement. I suggested we do x-rays three weeks ago and she said 'that would only rule out cancer'. Well, that would have been a good idea in retrospect. Rooibos is having his left hind leg amputated tomorrow. Before the procedure we'll do a CT scan to see if there are any tumors in the lungs or anywhere else. So far we've seen one potentially worrying spot on a rib in the x-rays but the vet is being cautious. Rooibos is a big brave loving boy. It breaks my heart to see him going through this. I was upset about the leg at first but am now trying to think of it as removing a source of tremendous pain that has no hope of healing. It is the only way I have to give us a chance at more time together. Our treatment plan is to follow with chemotherapy beginning in two weeks time. I'm still absorbing the news. I thought we would be dealing with a torn ligament. Its been comforting to me to discover this forum and to learn from all of you. It helps to feel I'm not alone and that I'm making the best choices for Rooibos. He's a strong otherwise healthy boy. Together we will fight this disease.

So happy for you and Maddie that her surgery went well and that she is on the road to recovery!

As for the long-acting anesthetic, the Dr that did Hazel's surgery last week said he used the same anesthetic and that it works better for dogs that way they aren't doped up with a bunch of narcotics, so nothing to worry about with that. It's a better alternative for the pain relief also.

Again, so happy for Maddie , you and your family! Be prepared for a hoppy, sleepy dog when she comes home and thats okay because resting now is the most crucial part to the healing process!!

much love heartheartheart

Hello everyone!  So sorry it took all day for me to post an update.  I was stuck in a meeting at work and was only able to exit to talk to the vet (PRIORITIES!!).  This morning the dr. said she was doing really well and was getting up/standing great for a dog her size.  She still had not eaten but was getting iv fluids. He told me this morning that he wasn't ready to say whether she could come home today or not - he was concerned about some edema (which he said was to be expected) and the fact that she would not "posture" to pee.  She just pees while she's standing or sitting or whatever.  So I called again this afternoon and spoke to the nurse who was caring for her.  The edema was getting worse so they are ice packing it 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off.  It's spreading up into her neck so they wanted to keep her another night.  I'm okay with that - if that's what is best for her.  She still won't eat anything but this doesn't surprise me as she is quite the creature of habit and I'm sure not comfortable there.  She went for THREE WALKS OUTSIDE TODAY!!!  The nurse said she tires quickly but is doing great! Still won't pee outside though.  I'm sure it's because she is scared, because she is literally the cleanest dog I've ever had.  She NEVER has accidents.  I will find out tomorrow morning when I can get her - they said probably about 9 a.m.  She's not in any discomfort and is sleeping well there.  They are still giving her the tranquilizers though because she is very anxious.  My concern (besides the edema) is that her tummy is going to be upset with all the meds and no food.  I thought of going over there and trying to feed her but I'm afraid that will just upset her when she can't leave with me.  So I sit here worrying about her but happy that the doctor thinks she is doing very well overall.  She is getting around which is the biggest hurdle in my mind. I think the other stuff will all be overcome with a little time.  Thank you all for your well wishes and good vibes for Mads.  I will keep you posted and I'm sure will be asking questions as soon as we get home.  How am I going to get her in the car?  That's my newest worry lol.
