I found this wonderful site at 3:00 this morning when I was up with Lily who is recovering from a front leg amputation. Lily is my two year old boxer mix, the results of her biopsy are not in yet. Her surgery was six days ago and she really has done fantastic. The thing that worries me the most right now is that at times she shakes uncontrollably. I was hysterical last night when I found her under my desk shaking so bad that her eyes were twitching. I rubbed her and massaged her back legs until she finally seemed better. Has anyone else experienced this?

Hi Kim - I'm so glad that you found us here...you will love being a member of this wonderful family!

I'm sorry to hear about Lily's shaking...I can only imagine how scary that is - I have not had any experience with that with Zeus...hopefully Tazzie will see this post (our resident vet!) and respond. In the meantime, I would call your vet. It may be a reaction to the pain meds - each dog seems to have a reaction to them...tho they are different of course depending on the medicine, the combination of the medicines and how long they've been on them and of course any other ailments our fur kids may have. OR possibly it is something else?

Please keep us posted and in the meantime, hopefully a few prayers may help.

What is she on for pain meds? could be a reaction to them. You would think it wouldn't come on all of a sudden, but our Marley who had her left hind leg amputated Monday just started having a reaction to the tramadol friday night - panting and some trembling. We stopped cold turkey and she's much better today! I'd call your vet or surgeon and see about stopping the meds or putting her on something else?

Glad you found us Kim! We started this site the night Jerry went in for surgery after finding little info and help online.

Lily may just be experiencing side effects from the pain meds, or withdrawal symptoms if she's just off them. I also remember TazzieDog (she's a vet) mentioning that a twitching is a normal reaction as the muscles heal and mend together. You might consider a warm compress ... the Hot/Cold Pain Relief Pack works great.

Thanks again, we look forward to hearing more about Lily.

Lily is on 50 mg of Rimadyl twice a day. I did run the shaking past the vet and she didn't seem concerned but it wasn't as bad as last night. Today I  offered her heat packs and that did seem to help a little. The vet did mention that Lily's boxer like body was incredibly muscular, making her surgery a bit harder. Hopefully it is just a part of the healing process. Thank you all so much - It's great to have people and pups who understand what we are going through.

If Lily is only on Rimadyl then it is probably not the meds.  I would agree that most likely she just needs more time to heal.  If she is eating and drinking I wouldn't worry.  If her shaking becomes more rigorous or doesn't stop then she might actually benefit from a low dose of Tramadol.

Kim and Lily

Welcome to the tripawd family - you have definitely found a wonderful place.

I hope Lily is doing much better today. Hang in there- the first two weeks are the hardest, but I am sure you will see after that your Lily is back to her old self.

Be sure and keep us posted on her progress.

Glad to hear that she's better today. Hang in there, it could be that she's just tired from using her muscles in new and different ways. Keep us posted. We're thinking of you both.

Oh Lily...I hope you are feeling better. We are all so different when it comes to the healing process. We are glad you found this site and are sure that it will be very helpful in the days to come. You can always count on someone being here to give you advice or share an experience. When Max was recovering, I was on it constantly. He had a bunch of complications that made his recovery both scary and longer than most. Everyone here, even if they hadnt experienced what I was experiencing, gave me helpful information.

Welcome and best of luck with Lily and her recovery!

Thank you again everyone for all your support. Lily's biopsy came back positive for osteosarcoma (as expected) and it has been a horrible few days. I am trying very hard to pull myself together for her and give her the normal, happy pup life she had before and she deserves again. She will be thrilled next week to be able to go upstairs to her bed.... me too.

Although she is still shaking it has gotten a lot better. An electric blanket (on low) on her pillow has not hurt either!!

Kim and Lily,

So sorry the biopsy didn't give you better news- that is what Wrigley has - osteosarcoma. It is very hard to hear that word.  But you are right to focus on the pawsitive- giving Lily the life she had before. We are 8 weeks post amp and I will say Wrigley has the life she had before now that  we have gotten  rid of the pain of the cancer. We just got back from a swim and run at the river- she loves it.  You would never know she was any different-

Hang in there and focus on the time you have NOW. Enjoy each and every second, cause that is what Lily will do- they don't know what tomorrow holds, nor do they care as long as there is love involved ( and maybe a treat or a walk).

We are all here for you- we are taking this journey together.

Keep us posted-

love to you both

Kim, we're so sorry. And it's totally normal to feel the way you do, that's OK. Lily, always remember that, doesn't care about the biopsy report, she just wants to keep on keepin on and having a good life with you, and go sleep upstairs again! Seanne's advice is exactly right; love, treats and play, that's all that matters to our pals. Hang in there OK?

Hi Kim....sorry to hear about the diagnosis. Max has osteosarcoma also and had his amp done Dec 18. We are getting ready for chemo treatment #3 and chest x-rays at the end of the month. Max, right this very minute is as good as ever. He is driving us all crazy wanting to go out and chase his tennis ball 24/7 and its COLD here! We live in Il!

Take each day and savor the moments..they are precious. Lily will be happy as long as she is with you...and when she can sleep upstairs again!

Hang in there!  Hugs and licks to both of you!
