I am starting this thread in the hopes that one day another kitty mama will need some information on metronomics in kitties, specifically for osteosarcoma.

A brief background (I'll try to keep this brief):

OSA in kitties does not spread as rapidly as it does in dogs, so in almost all situations, when a kitty gets OSA, they amputate the leg and that's it.  No chemo of any kind is recommended.  Jill's case, however, presented differently.  Her primary tumor was in her toe and her toe was amputated (upon amputation, clear margins were achieved, so no further treatment was recommended.  6 months later, however, a met appeared under the skin (not in any bone) in that same leg.  So, we know Jill's case spreads more rapidly than it typically does in a cat.  Her leg was then amputated as we all known and then she was treated by four rounds of IV chemo (2 rounds of carbo, 2 rounds of doxorubicin, alternating the two).

Since I have learned so much about metronomics on this site, I brought it up to her oncologist, and we decided to give it a try.  Jill's bone marrow has had a rough time bouncing back from the IV chemo, it is now 12 weeks later and her white blood cells, specifically her neutrophils, are still on the low end.  We know from CBC's done prior to chemo that she has naturally low neutrophils, but they are still lower than "Jill normal".  Since this is the case, instead of cytoxan (Cyclophosphamide), which many with OSA are treated with metronomically, Jill will be taking Leukeran (chlorambucil).

So begins our journey part 3.  She will be given a 1mg capsule daily of Leukeran for 6 months.  Each month, she will have an exam and blood work done to test her white blood cells.  It has been so frustrating for me up until this point, yet I do understand, that there is no research done and I have no information on metronomics on cats.  I do understand and agree that money needs to go into researching diseases that affect more animals - why spend the money on this when it appears that there is just this one cat that needs the background information.  So I get it.  However, I would have loved some comfort going into this knowing that this will be helping her and she will handle it well.

So, here is to Jill being a pioneer and here is to hoping that one day, our journey will help some kitty mama!

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Update: Was a little nervous to give the first dose, because it's a capsule and I've only ever give her a pill and this is larger than anything I've ever given her.  Clearly, she's not happy about this and mad at me now (that is total sarcasm)......what a great little girl, she just continues to amaze me.

Erica what a fantastic Mom you are. Starting anything new for our babies is scary, but she'll do great. What a lover you have.
Good thoughts always,

You are a trailblazer!  OMGosh, that video is precious.  Love the kitty toes. All the pics melt my heart.  You and Jill rock!

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

Awwww you guys these pics are seriously sweet!!!

Here's to Jilly indeed. You two are pioneers in the cat osteosarcoma journey. As hard as it is to experience this, I hope it brings you comfort in knowing how much of a difference you are making in people's lives, even if you can't see it now.

Erica, you ARE wearing rubber gloves right?

For whatever it's worth, money and studies have bnen used to study dogs AND they still don't know much! And the very little that they "do know", SOME--CERTAINLY NOT ALL oncologists "doctor it up" to their own agenda anyway! You have a great one, as do most here, who truly cares about you and about Jill.

By blazing your own trail and doing g your own research and. making your own choices (albeit "forced choices"), I really think you will have cot I used success!

If cuteness and love heal-----heck----game won!! You and Jill are winners o matter what happens.

I've been trying to post to your blog-and still Intend to-----type stuff and then darn thing just stays stuck o. submit reply. So I'll catch you there later.

Pictures and captions are spot on!!

It's a head trip "knowing" the famous Jill!! And she hasn't even begun t reach everyone e yet! You need to start selling signed pawtograph pictures:-) :-) YAY Sally---I UST made that up---"pawtograph". It's hard being a computer genius AND so brilliant:-) :-)

See ya on the blog,

Sally and Happy Hannah

Okay darn! Now I can't find your blog anymore! Nowya' see it now ya' don't!

Had to laugh at Jerry's reference to you using a rubber glove. For a minute I thought poor Jill had to endure this pill up the butt everyday:-) :-) DUH! Then I realized it was because you were touching a chemo pill.

Just wanted to add how much I really admire your courage and tenacity to keep figuring out what's best for your Jill You are already helping other cats and you are already breaking new ground with every beat of her sweet heart. Who knows how this will turn out? No one. Will you know that you are doing everything possible for your girl? Darn tootin'. Do they say "darn tootin' in New York?

You realize this is not a story for medical books--------------it's an upcoming bestseller on hope, survival, courage and love!! And I want my pawtograhed copy at first printing!! Loving pawtographed:-) :-)

Love to you both!

Today Jill had her 3 week check up after being on the leukeran.  First things first, her chest X-Ray looked OK to Jill's oncologist, but they don't like to give the "all clear" until the radiologist sees it, so I had to sweat it out all day.  Just got the email, the radiologist agrees!  Lungs are all clear!  Yipee Skippee!!!  No chest x-ray for 6 months now....we'll see if I can make it that long.

Blood work - no surprise here, WBC's, Neutrophils and lymphocytes all low, but nothing so low that we need to stop the Leukeran.  Physical exam looked great.  Jill has been quite lethargic since starting the metronomics , however they feel that is just a side effect from it and I should just keep an eye on her.  If it's something she can't get used to, we can always stop.  She is still eating, using the litter box and grooming herself, so those are all good signs.

Poor thing was SO nervous today, I've never seen her this anxious to leave the apartment.  She was panting like crazy on the cab ride to and from the hospital, I have NEVER seen her do that! and she is simply exhausted now!

We'll test her blood every month now just to make sure everything is working as it should be.

For now, I'll let her rest so she can be back up and running for our entertainment pleasure in a few days.  Thank you for all of our support as usual, I can't tell you how much it always means to me!
