Rene,

I know you are writing a blog post about Leukeran v. Cytoxan, so I wanted to share this article, I'm not sure if I had shown it to you before:

Jill is a 9-year-old tuxedo kitty. She was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in June 2012 on her toe in her right hind leg. Her leg was amputated on 12/12/12 and she completed four rounds of chemo (2 of Carbo, 2 of Doxy) in April 2013. Hi - we finally got the results back from J's urine culture.  NO bacteria!  None.  Unfortunately, he's still having problems.  I was hoping that just a few days would solve his problem and it's not.  The onco says it can take WEEKS to clear up!  So long as we still keep him on his anti- inflammatories (50mg rimadyl, twice a day) and MSM (400mg, twice a day), that's all we can do.  Or so she says.  I'm actually in Boulder now and I am trying hard to get up to Only Natural Pet and pick up a bladder support supplement.  I gotta get my boy back on track!  He doesn't seem bothered by it.  His first pee is a lot.  Then subsequent pees, it appears he "thinks" there's more pee.  Which, there isn't, or there's enough inflammation where there's blockage.  I'm glad there's no bacteria, but that would have been a comforting solution.  Poor guy!

I asked the onco...could this now be a bladder cancer?  She's very against that.  Given Jackson is experience common symptoms of cytoxan and she's seen it take weeks to heal...she's fairly convinced it's not a bladder tumor.  If in like 6 weeks he's still having this, then we'd ultrasound.  But, I'm really not focusing on that.  I'm comforted by Jackson's apparent comfort and the onco's confidence.

I'll start a new post on leukeran, too, as I've learned more.

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. For Jackson, he's been getting Hip & Joint EXTRA STRENGTH from Pet Naturals of Vermont.  I buy it from Only Natural Pet!  Other folks like and use Glyco-Flex (II or III).

After this week in Boulder, I'm home for a few days THEN I take off for the epic trip!

He's been off cycloph for 15 days and he's still having symptoms.  He'll have an occasional accident in the house - the last one didn't have any blood in it, but during this morning's walk there was a few drops of "urine-y blood."  I call it that b/c I feel "bloody urine" makes it sound like he's peeing entirely blood.  Rather, what we see is the faintest hint of red in his urine.  It's all mixed in and no clots.  It's hard to see.  The only way I saw it today was the drops landed on a lightly colored stone.  I think as he strains, this is when the urine-y blood comes.  We're trying to only let him pee once (a quick in-and-out), but sadly, he needs more time to poo.

To help him out, he's on 2 bladder support supplements:

I don't know if they're helping, but it makes me feel better knowing he's getting as much help as possible!  I called ONP about it and these herbal supplements can take a few weeks to help.  Today is his 5th day on Tract Ease and third day on Cranimals.

I wish he was all better for so many reasons!  One of them is that we leave tomorrow for three weeks...I'm nervous, but I know he's in far better care here at home with a house/dogsitter than a kennel.  Let's hope that by the time we return, Jackson is all healed and back to peeing like normal!  If not, I guess we do an ultrasound (and you know where my mind drifts and dreads....).

Katy,

Things will be ok.  I am giving Sassy actual cranberry pills.  An adult dose.  Started that when she got the UTI.  She is kinda dribbling when she pees but no blood.  We start our leukeran tomorrow.  I asked if I could do everyother day until we got that.  The oncologist wanted us to completely stop but with the mets i was too worried.   Now I don't have too.

Have a fun & safe trip

Katy, I'm so bummed that he's not better yet but I'll bet it'll just take some time. We are sending lots of pawsitivity and hoping that things will get better for him. Hang in there and try not to worry, you are doing everything possible for him. Have a great trip and keep us posted when you get back OK? We'll be thinking of you both.

Yep, J's gonna be just fine.  Try not to worry (yeah, I know) but you've left him in good hands, in the house that is his home.  Enjoy your epic vacation!

Liberty (Libby) was diagnosed with OSA on 1-22-13.  Right front amputation on 1-31-13. No IV Chemo. Metronomic Therapy started 2-19-13 along with supplements and some home cooking. Lungs clear until 1-06-14.  She's still her happy, hoppy, bossy self.  Living the dog life to the fullest and a proud Winter Warrior. :) RIP my Libby 4-21-03 to 3-19-14

He certainly is getting as much help as possible! And, if I'm reading your posts right his "symptons" are better. So maybe the cycloph gave him a tint kcik start and the hebs will take it the rest of the way
Now Michelle, NOTHING is going to "happen" while you're gone? Even if.....if......this urine stuff doesn't clear up as well as you'd like.nothing is going to happen while you're gone!
He's feeling great, eating and happy...no symptons whatsoever causing him any unhappinessabd all that is very imoortant!

thanks for the info. on the nerbs he's getting...you are such a diliigent mom!

Maybe your dogsitter can set up some webcam--skycam(?) visits with Jackson for you while you're gone!

Have a great ti e! Jackson says to have a grest time because he will be!!

Lots of love to you!

Katy - is there any chance that Jackson is on thyroid meds? Is there any chance there is a combo of things going on? The reason I'm asking is that Daisy had accidents for a couple of months before they figured out her thyroid levels were too high (never adjusted after amputation) in addition to her having a UTI.

Sending good thoughts your way,
Alicia
