This past month has been a total hurricane of emotions.  My dog Henry was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma on his front left paw on 5/31/16.  He has other lumps and bumps on his body, and has had 2 other fatty type cysts removed from his left leg is 12/2012 and 10/2015.  This latest bump showed up on his front paw between his bottom foot pad and his dewclaw.  It grew very rapidly and the oncologist advised that surgery would not provide clear margins and radiation would be necessary and possibly chemo; amputation was also listed as a possible solution.  Henry is a 10 year old, 30lb pekepoo and the love of my life.  Blood work, x-rays and ultrasound looked good and I opted for what I thought would give him the best option to remove all the cancer without any other treatment.  Henry had his front left leg amputated 6/8/16. They also took some lymph nodes to check for spreading and I'm so blessed as results of the biopsy show the cancer is gone.  We will just have to follow up with chest x-rays every 3 to 4 months.

This site has provided me with so much information and support through his recovery.  I'm hoping to get some help with the healing process, both for him and me.

Yesterday I took off Henry's shirt and decided he hasn't been scratching I'd let him go shirtless and see what would happen.  After investigating his healing (his staples were removed on the 23rd) I noticed that by one of his skin tags he has what I hope is a little flap of excess skin.  Of course my initial thought was, is this another sarcoma?  My parents came over, both thought it was probably excess skin but like most of you, after what we've been through "probably just" isn't really going to calm our fears.  Those who have dogs who are further along in the process, have you noticed anything like this? It feels like excess skin, it doesn't feel like there is fluid in it.  I remember when talking to the surgeon she talked about when the staples come out the skin may stretch or tighten and this would be what would cause them to itch.  I never asked if the skin would visibly look different as this occurred.  Any info would be appreciated.

Thank you so much!!!

Hard to say without seeing a picture, but Sadie has some flabby skin at the low end of her incision. Combined with her "I've had puppies" nipples, she looks a little like she needs a bra. 😛

Ok, lets see if this works.  The pink arrow is his skin tag, the turquoise arrow is for the skin flap in question.

There may be more muscle and tissue left on one side of the incision than the other - in fact, I think that is a given.  That makes Pofi's incision seem a bit lumpy on the upper side - above the missing leg and toward the front.  I'll try to take a picture and share.  Not a vet, but I don't see anything too odd there......

On October 27, 2016, nearly 6 months after amputation, and 18 months since his cancer likely started, we lost Pofi to a recurrence of Soft Tissue Sarcoma in his spine quite suddenly.  His canine sister also succumbed to cancer on March 1, 2019 - we lavished her with our love in the interim, but life was never quite the same without her only real canine friend. Cliff kitty had to leave us, too, suddenly, in August 2019. Lucia kitty grieved all these losses, but helped us welcome two new Lurchers into our home and our lives, Shae and Barley.

It doesn't look too worrisome to me either but why not email it to the surgeon just to put your mind at ease?

Also not a vet, but it does not look inflamed or irritated.  Has it changed size or appearance since you discovered it?    I would also ask your vet, just for peace of mind, but wouldn't stress too much.

I noticed it last night when I was changing his tshirt and decided to let him go "naked" since he hasn't been scratching and has healed so well. It's definitely not inflamed or irritated. Thanks for all the messages. I'll give the vet a call.

Well, this morning the skin flap is almost gone.  Paranoid mom here, it seems like a normal process with healing.  Deep breaths, right?

Wow! That's great news. Funny how pre-cancer most of us would have taken a wait and see approach. Now, we panic. . .

As the scar heals it will change over time and likely flatten out. The only thing I notice on Mona is that she gets tiny matts of fur on a couple of places along the scar line so I need to brush there every day. Otherwise one wouldn't know she had surgery. Well, except for a missing leg...

Henry is adorable. Probably the same size as my cat!
