My Samson is 2. He lost a rear leg due to an infection at birth and we had the remainder of the leg amputated at 10 months. I took him for his OFA x-Rays a few weeks ago and he has dysplasia in his rear hip. Anyone ever have hip replacement done on a tripaw and have any information on recovery?

Welcome to Tripawds, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

We have several tripawds who have had surgery on a remaining limb after amputation, but the only THR in a rear amp I can think of is Murphy.  Murphy's Mom Kathi posts as murphsmom.  Here is a link to posts about Murphy. (and a few about new pup Ollie too).

Sadly, Murph crossed the Bridge earlier this year but Kathi is still active here, you should hear from her soon.

Sampson doesn't need surgery right away does he?  I know we have a couple tripawds living with dysplasia and managing for now.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about Sampson.

I have been searching the archives for my first posts to this forum, but they (along with my Youtube videos) seem to have flown into the Ethernet.

We joined Tripawds in March of 2013, just over a month after our Murphy had his total hip replacement. Murphy was almost three when he was hit by a car and subsequently lost one of his hind legs. At the time of his accident, his other hip was also dislocated. It dislocated three more times, with corrective surgeries in between. After the fourth dislocation, we opted to try a THR. Our vet had performed three of them previously on Tripawds, and all of them were successful. Murphy had a KYON replacement done by Dr Randy Acker in Sun Valley, Idaho. He is somewhat of a pioneer in the canine joint replacement field. You can see his info on the Sun Valley Animal Center website.

There is a lot of intense work that needs to be done with this surgery, but for us it was worth it all. In total, Murphy was on a leash at all times outside the house for the first seven months after his accident. He was on restricted activity for four months after the hip replacement. He did several weeks of physical therapy/rehab once the hip implant grew into the bone. He loved going to therapy, and used to scold any other dogs who dared get near his "tank" (hydrotherapy). The video of him running on the beach the month he was cleared to just be a dog is called The Happiest Dog In the world". It is among the videos I will try to dig out for you tomorrow.

We are going to be going to Boise in the morning, but when we get home, I will try to reconstruct some of Murphy's Youtube channel so you can see the videos of his progress through his recovery.

I am glad you found us here. I wish I had known about Tripawds before all of Murphy's surgeries, but I am so very happy that I did find it when I did.

Kathi and the .Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Thanks, Jerry. The Tripawds Tuesday post was most of what was in my first post, anyway. I just don't understand what is happening with my "stuff" on the computer. I know that I did not delete the Murphy the Three Legged Dog channel, but it certainly has been deleted by someone. I am going to see if I can go into the old XP computer and download some of the videos and pictures onto a memory stick or CD and then transfer them to a NEW Murphy channel. Hopefully that will work.

PS As long as I asked a technical question, do you know why I now have to log in every time I access the site?

I am sorry, Anna Marie, but I have not had any success in recovering my videos from the old computer, BUT...most of them are on Ollie and Murphy's Facebook page. Are you on Facebook? If you want to send me a PM, I will send you an invitation to the page, and you will be able to look at many, many videos of Murphy throughout his recovery.

Here is the link to my very first post. The videos in later posts that came through Youtube are not there, though.

Thank you so much.  I will look for your facebook page.  I know that it will be a great deal of work with his recovery.  We live in Michigan and I have found 3 orthopedic surgeons that have come highly recommended.  One of them is MSU Vet School.  I will take him for a consult at each and then wait for spring to have the surgery.  We think he should be fine until then with restrictions.  We have a hydrotherapy program about 4 minutes away so that will work.  How often did Murphy have to go to therapy?

We took Murphy to rehab twice a week for eight weeks after his surgeon released him for it. He did go back for occasional tuneups after that. You are so fortunate to be that close to a rehab center. We had to go an hour each way for ours.

There are some of my earlier videos of Murphy's recovery on the link I posted above. You just have to kind of look through the posts for them. The "happiest dog in the world" one is on there. The FB page has more than this site, because most of the recovery was before I learned to use youtube. I guess that is fortunate, since the youtube channel disappeared.

PS. The FB page is in both Oliver and Murphy's names now.
