We found out this week that Toto does not have osteosarcoma… he has hemangiosarcoma. I have been reading through the boards for information and experiences from others who have dealt with this. Just wondering if anyone has any advice/information/stories to share.
Thanks!

OfflineWe are so so sorry, we read the blog and our hearts just broke for you both. Many hugs…
You should read Luna's Story here, and if you want to, PM Sandra, Luna's Mom. She has a lot of knowledge about hemangiosarcoma and is always willing to talk to others going through it.
Thank you! I will definitely do that…
Hopefully now that you have a better diagnosis, you will be able to lay out your options with confidence. While I cannot really comment on this new diagnosis, we want you to know that we are pulling for you and sending all the pawsitive thoughts possible from the West Coast. Keep us posted!

OfflineHi folks,
I'm replying to this thread because of the same subject, but almost 2 years after the thread was first started.
You can check out our story at butcheyhudson.tripawds.com – but I am searching for any other hemangiosarcoma patients with tumors in bones or joints. Thankfully, Butch's scans have not shown any masses as of yet. We are 4 months post-amp. Scans again in a couple of weeks.
I am looking to connect for some sharing of info on treatment plans and stories. HSA is a rare cause for amputation, supposedly less than 5% of bone cancers. It normally shows up in the spleen or heart and is a nasty nasty cancer, but really…are there any nice cancers?
Please feel free to share and/or PM me.
Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide.

OfflineHey Nancy! And the Butchmeister!
I see Cometdog found you lots of links to some hemangio dogs. That cancer doesn't seem to be a real common one among dogs here but I do remember three of the dogs Comet mentioned. Typically, what I've seen are OSA dogs here. There are a few of us that have soft tissue cancer dogs and some mast cell cancer dogs and a few condrosarcoma dogs, that I'm aware of. Unfortunately, these forums are VERY VERY active(I say unfortunately because it seems cancer is in so many of our dogs
) so maybe others will chime in that have hemangiosarcoma.

Hi Nancy,
Welcome! I'm so sorry that Butch and your family are going thru this, but it sounds like (from your blog) that Butch is doing great.
My dog Percy has hemangiosarcoma. It was in his tibia — the vet initially thought it was osteosarcoma but the biopsy came back as hemangiosarcoma after his amputation. I was told that, unfortunately, hemangiosarcoma is even more aggressive than osteosarcoma.
We've done five treatments of doxorubicin, and now are on a combination of carboplatin and vinorelbine. Percy had one tiny met at diagnosis and the doxorubicin maintained that (we were hoping it might shrink but it did not), but they found a few more in the first checkup after switching to carboplatin which is why they added vinorelbine (they said that it is supposed to have better penetration into the lungs). We are scheduled for scans again at our next visit and I am dreading that. On the positive side, the side effects of carboplatin and vinorelbine have been significantly less than doxorubicin, so Percy seems to be feeling better since stopping the doxorubicin.

OfflineHi everypawdy!!!
You know what is funny? (Or really not so funny?)
When I google my dog's exact issue "hemangiosarcoma knee joint amputation" I get Tracy's post in this forum as the TOP result!
What's that saying? LOL!
Cometdog, thanks so much for doing all that research. I did PM a few people.
Hey Percy's Mom! I am sorry to hear you are here too! I am going to make a note of the drugs you mentioned and discuss with our oncologist. I will keep good thoughts for the next scan.
We are most likely going to metronomics now as well. Our 10 day CBC after our 5th treatment showed his WBC at 2100 and neutrophils at 462. They like 4000 and 1000, respectively. WBC has been at that level before, but his neautrophils hit an all time low this go around. He also had already been on antiobiotics for a couple of days previous to the CBC. We struggled with the 5th chemo treatment decision, it is highly unlikely we will go with a 6th. But he is doing well, and appetite is good. I'd say just a bit more sluggish and sleepy.
I'm hoping Percy didn't have any cardiac issues after the chemo treatments….? We were clear just before 4th. But we have scans again on our next visit.
Does Percy have a blog? Please keep me updated! =)

Thanks for the good thoughts, Nancy! We can use all that we can get!
I'm glad to hear that Butch is doing well and that his appetite is good. I hope his upcoming scans go well too.
Percy did not have any sign of cardiac damage after his doxorubicin. I started to get really worried about that at Percy's 4th treatment mainly because he seemed to be panting much more and much longer than usual after our walks. I just did not want to treat so aggressively that I kill him with the treatment. But his tests (echo and EKG) came back normal, so I went thru with five treatments but declined the sixth. Looking back, I think that his panting may have been due to the heat and humidity of summer (we're in FL). The doxorubicin did seem to be more effective than carboplatin against Percy's cancer so it was one of those rock-and-hard-place decisions of whether to do the sixth treatment or stop at five. It seems like ever since cancer came into our lives, decisions have been "what will I regret less?" rather than "what do I prefer more?"
Percy has had some WBC drops with both the doxorubicin and carboplatin treatments also, so we've been on antibiotics several times.
Since stopping doxorubicin, Percy's fur is growing back (he had lost his outer coat) and his activity level has improved. You wouldn't guess that he was sick if you didn't know. Our dogs are just amazing, aren't they?
I'm afraid Percy doesn't have a blog because I'm not good about keeping up with computer stuff regularly :/
Please keep me updated on Butch too! I'll try and post if we learn anything that might be helpful to others.

OfflineToo funny (or not?) that my post comes up as the top result in Google :)
All of this stuff sure makes our heads spin, huh? What to do, what not to do…what is right at the moment, what isn't right at the moment… It's all a struggle…but we all try to do what's best for our fur kids! Glad to hear that Butchey's appetite and attitude is great! And I'm glad you've posted in the forums to try to find more hemagiosarcoma dogs…This is a GREAT place, even though none of us really want to be here!
