Tai had a week of pain meds but the vet refilled her Gabapentin when I asked for it (she was already on Rimadyl for her arthritis).   Her pain cues were excessive panting and restlessness. Don't be afraid to ask and advocate for Charlie!  You know your dog best.

Your pics do look a bit scary, poor brave guy.  I'm sorry I can't offer any advice about the drainage since Tai didn't have that.  I can offer some hugs though big-blinkand eating, drinking, pooping & peeing clap

I also saw the photos on your blog. You got great advice already and I also share others dismay in the "dirty" site and lack of pain meds. My cat Mona had her leg and scapula amputated by a regular vet. She came home with a drainage tube that I had to snap a few times a day. I cleaned up any seepage with a warm, damp facecloth and it was all nice, clean and tidy. I don't recall her getting any scabs and it seemed to just heal.

I hope you get an appropriate response from your vet or the surgeon to alleviate your concerns. I hope Charlie heals soon!

Hugs,

Kerren

It definitely sounds as if Charlie is in pain.  I would call the vet or take him in and request more pain medication.  Specifically Tramadol & Gabapentin.  Rimadyl is like taking Motrin - it's ridiculous of the vet to think that it would be enough.  You could take the cone off for his comfort - many of use just put a t-shirt on to keep the incision covered & clean.  Murphy wasn't really able to get to his incision with a t-shirt on.

None of us are trying to upset you, but just reinforcing that you are 100% sppt on that he needs more pain meds NOW and thst seroma site needs to be checked out!!

I CANNOT BELIEVE HE JUST HAS RIMADYL!!! Insane!!! He is shivering because HE IS IN PAIN!!!!!!

I know I've said this on every post, but PLEASE find another Vet if at all possible!

Charlie needs some strong pain meds. You need to be given more options for handling that seroma so it doesn't get infected. Thank goodness our "Nurse Donna" chimed in on that!!

To me, the fact that he had a seroma before in his stump and it got infected wnd didn't really heal....and now this for over a week (right?) I guess I'm just being overly cautious but I woukd want it checked out by someone else to make sure it's just a "normal" seroma .

We do have something to celebrate! YAAAAAAAAAY FOR poopicon_pngpoopicon_pngpoopicon_png

We'll look for your next update! You are a really, really good advocate for your sweet boy! Stay tough!!

Lots of hugs!

I've got nothing to add about the seroma or drainage or much else. I saw the pictures on you blog, poor Charlie! poor you!

Isa had pain meds (tramadol, gabapentin and metacam for inflammation) for at least three weeks post-surgery and the gabapentin for a while after that.

Definitely when Charlie (and you) are better talk to the vet about how bloody he was when you picked him up. The surgery site is more than enough to push anyone over the edge, they have no need to make it worse with something so easily resolved. I've said a thing or two to my vet about far less. As someone else said, you're paying them more than enough that we/you should be treated as royalty.

Mostly just want to add my voice of support. Many around here swear by wine and chocolate (for the humans). Do keep us posted, we are all here for you and rooting for a much improved Charlie very, very soon. Demands for pictures of a happy smiling Charlie will begin immediately thereafter.

hugs!

Update on Charlie. He looks better and is feeling better. Got him pain meds yesterday. They gave him Deramaxx?! Not sure if it's the best but you can see a difference in his personality and he's stopped whining and yelping. Thank you for the support. I'll post pics soon.

So relieved to hear Charlie is doing better! 🙂 🙂 GREAT NEWS! 🙂 🙂 So the incision is looking better and the drainage is stopping?? How 'bput the drainage hole itself? Is that closing up some?

Thankfully, iIt sounds like the Deramaxx is helping!. That is similar to the anti inflammatory Rimadyl and is generally used WITH a pain med like Tramadol. I'm still astounded that your Vet never gave Charlie anything stronger than an anti- inflammatory! I hope the Vet never has major surgery where his arm and shoukder are removed and all they give him is basically a strong aspirin!

Just curious what they said when asked about giving him stronger pain meds.

Dogs are stoic and they hide their pain as best they can. But yes, thank goodness he at least has the Deramaxx!!!

Thanks for updating us. I can assure you, we've all been anxiously waiting! 🙂
Please stay connected and let us know how he's doing. We're all cheering for this brave and courageous fella'! This recovery has been tougher on him than it needs to be through no fault of yiurrs or his. Being able to see him start to feel better has got to be a relief for both of you!

Hugs

Oh jeez 😩 I thought it WAS a pain killer. I hadn't the time to read up on it because I was on lunch break when I went to retrieve the meds. When I called that morning I told the receptionist (she adores Charlie and slips tidbits on the sly to me) that I wanted him to have either Tramadol or the Gab and she said that was more than likely what he'd give us. But then I got there and it was Deramaxx and she said that "This is what he prescribed, you should definitely notice a difference in Charlie after this." And though she was right I'm still irritated to know that it is basically the same thing as Rimadyl -.- ugh

Dermavaxx is used to control pain and inflammation. It would be similar to Metacam. After Mona's amputation she was only on the Metacam 5 days after the amputation. Although it's similar to Rimadyl perhaps Charlie is responding better to the Dermavaxx.

So don't despair!!  Charlie seems to be better already. Also use the ice packs or cold cloths on the site.

Hugs to all,

Kerren and Tripawd Kitty Mona

You are such a good voice for Charlie!! Sounds like thr receptionist even thought Charlie wouk would get Tramadol or Gabapentin! You are doing a great job of not exploding with frustration at this point! 🙂 🙂

The most important thing is that Charlie feels better, so it is doing some good, that's for sure!! 🙂 I think because he's eleven days out from surgery the pain has to have subsided some by now anyway. The Deramaxx maybe effective by itself now because the pain isn't at it's peak.

So how is Mr. Charlie doing overall? Is he resting comfortably? Goes out to potty okay? Do yiu mind posting another picture of the incision? Sounds like that is showing improvement too! YAY! 🙂 🙂

And how about you? Are you getting some good shut eye at night? This recovery is pretty stressful for about two weeks. And goodness knows, you've had a stressful recovery up to this point! It appears though, that things are finally starting to move past the hardest part of the recovery.

You really are getting through this with incredible strength!! Soon Charlie's sparkle will start to come back. You'll see his tail wag more often and he'll start getting on with living life to the fullest....but with a bit more spoiling!! You'll find it's very hard not to spoil a tripawd 24/7! 🙂

Can't really add to what others have said.  Otis came home clean, and with Rimadyl and Tramadol.  We continued the Tramadol into week 3.  I'm appalled that you are going through this!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.
