Green poop?

Hey all so I am not sure if I should be concerned that my dog had green poop this am and then went again and it was liquid.  She has a sensitive stomach and I know the pain medication may upset her stomach and a friend brought her a huge treat/bone (but not green) yesterday.  So if it is just an upset stomach I know how to deal with that but since she just had surgery I didn't want to be overlooking anything.  And I am a little worried about the incision site, it is swollen on the lower side and red but isn't leaking or seeming to bother her but I am paranoid the green poop could be a sign of an infection.  She is not on any antibiotics, only pain medication.  She of course isn't totally herself since she had the amputation a few days ago but still wants to go for a walk and wants attention.  I can always ask my Vet tomorrow but wasn't sure if I should not wait until then.

It is very important to keep an eye out for any abnormal intestinal issues when dogs take NSAIDs. Let us know what medication Cholla is on on, and read this post about the dangers of reactions to NSAIDs in some dogs.

Regarding the swelling, it sounds like a seroma is developing, which is perfectly normal and common in most dogs after amputation. Watch our video with Dr. Pam to learn more about post-amputation seromas and other common complications.

I'm sorry to hear about your pup not feeling well.

I'm not a vet or anything but from my understanding regarding green poop – is it is moving through the intestines fast and hasn't had a chance to broken down to turn brown.

If you can get a touch with your vet today, I would ensure she is getting lots of liquids. An perhaps a bland diet of white rice for the day.  This is what my vet suggest for upset tummies.

Best wishes!

I'm sorry to hear Cholla isn't feeling well.  I am not a vet but I was surprised you said Cholla isn't on any antibiotics, this seemed odd.  We are almost at our 2 month ampuversary and still on antibiotics (cephalexin).  Fergus has a very sensitive stomach and as long as he takes his meds with food and he has his daily FortiFlora (probiotics), his tummy has been fine.  Fergus' incision is almost closed and the vet has kept him on the meds until he was fully healed.  Long story, but he had to be opened up again a few weeks ago so everything has taken longer.  The antibiotics hopefully don't have anything to do with the issue you are facing but just wondering what other folks have to say.  Is it normal not to be taking any antibiotics a few days post amp?

Wishing healing thoughts for Cholla,

Tara & Fergus
