Getting a newly amputated dog tonight to foster

Tonight I am getting a rear amputee dog to foster while we try to find a permanent home.  I have seen dogs who have three legs and act no different but this dog is post op 14 days.  She is a large dog (90lb) and I guess was too overwhelming for her owner.  She is 3 years old, and crying all the time, keeping her owner awake and stressing her out so she took her to the vet to have her put down.  The vet tech called the rescue and we talked her into letting us take her.  So here I am.  First I am going to check that she is on pain meds because to me it seems like her crying is related to being in pain, she is being left alone for 10-12 hours a day so I think that the pain management is probably not there and if I can make sure she is not in pain her constant crying will stop.  Is there anything else I should know?  Also I know of a rescue close to me ( I live in Eastern Washington) that specializes in handicapped dogs but if anyone else has any suggestions as to who we can go to for help that would be great.  Obviously I am going to keep her until she is completely healed and off med's etc.  Also we will test temperment and stuff like that.  According to the vet tech she is a sweetheart and a typical dane leaning on you for affection.  It sounds like she was more of an outside/garage dog so hopefully being in a house and being part of the family will not be too stressful for her.  Thanks in advance for the help and or advice.

Welcome, your future forum posts will not require moderation. Please consider posting your pup's adoption details in the Tripawd Rescue forum. Does she have a name? And do you know why she had an amputation? Crying out may also be a symptom of phantom limb pain.

You're awesome for taking her in. 10 days ago I took in a foster - blind puppy, who was 10 days post-op for her front leg amputation. She's no longer a foster I've adopted her. Her pain management definitely wasn't good when I took her in and getting that sorted  out has been a big help. I've also read it's harder on big dogs, so some it may be emotional too.

I live in Washington too, and that rescue group that specializes in special needs is the best resource I know out there. You might also contact PAWS, they are in western WA but I also know they work with shelters all across the state so they may have some resources for you.

Good luck!

Bless you and the vet and the rescue group for saving this sweet girl. (I will refrain from giving any opinion on the original owner.......)

It does indeed sound like maybe her pain management is not under control. Hope you can get that sorted out.

Usually 14 days out is pretty good, but it does seem to take the bigger dogs a little longer sometimes.

Hang in there!

Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Thank you for giving this girl another chance at a good, loving home. As Admin said, check out our suggestions about Tripawd-proofing your home. I think that for now that's a good place to focus in addition to trying to manage her pain. Sounds like she could really use some relief. Also, is she eating and eliminating OK? How is her appetite?

We would love to see pics. There have been lots of Danes here at Tripawds, you're in great company.

If the pain management isn't the reason for the whining, she might have anxiety.  Our Bailey did that, and we began giving him Rescue Remedy and it really helped.

Thank you for being there for taking her in.  She needs someone like you!  It reads like she needs some TLC and time to adjust.  I wish you all the best and look forward to hearing how you two manage, bond, and learn to trust each other.  Keep us updated!

ACL tear in right hind leg 12/5/12 and scheduled ACL repair surgery 12/21/12. Pre-op xrays revealed osteosarcoma. Amputation 12/28/12.  Chemo (carboplatin) started Jan 10, 2013 and ended on April 5, for a total of 5 doses. He handled carbo like a champ!  No side effects.  We started metronomic therapy at his third chemo and have been also doing some holistic treatments.  He's a lively, playful 10 year old huskie-boarder collie and a very proud member of the Winter Warriors!  Our love. Our funny little guy!

Thank you for taking her in.  It sounds like her pain management has not been the best and she could use some TLC.  Amputation is hard the first 2 weeks, especially on the bigger dogs, but she should do well if she is in a loving environment now.  I won't say what I want to about her first owner, but know that you are pretty darn awesome for opening your home and saving her from being euthanised!
