So the really good news is that my greyhound Sally (who has osteosarcoma) is coping on her three legs brilliantly.  She's back running round the fields with her friends, eating well and in good spirits.  She has had five rounds of carboplatin and I have decided that is where we will leave it.  She hates going into the hospital so much that I don't want to put her through it any more.

She has coped well with the chemo and hasn't really suffered any side effects until about two weeks ago her fur started to come out excessively.  I brush her for at least ten minutes every day and still clumps of it are coming out.  Has anyone else had this happen?  Is there anything I should be doing?

Thanks so much.

Super Sally, we are hoppy you are rockin' life on three legs!

About the fur loss, is there any chance it could be related to summer shedding? Did the weather heat up where you are living?

It's not super common for fur loss to occur, but not too unusual either. In fact I came up with so many search results in the forums that I couldn't narrow it down. Is there any skin irritation going along with the fur loss? Are there bald / irritated patches of skin?

I would definitely mention it to your vet if you haven't already. It could be related, or it might not. But your vet is the best one to help figure this out.

Thanks so much for your message.  I guess it could be partly down to summer shedding (we're in the UK so it is warming up) but this is excessive.  There's not a lot left!  I can't see any skin irritation but she is getting some bald patches.  I'm putting linseed oil in her food as I've heard that can help.

I will mention it to her vet but he's very laid back.  He just keeps saying they all react in different ways!

As long as it doesn't bother her I guess I shouldn't worry.  She has been getting very hot since doing the chemo so maybe this is her body's way of coping with that.

You might want to try a high quality fish oil instead, which can do great things for her coat as well as her joints. Double duty!

Yeah, I think your theory might be what's going on. But I've read that vets are quite familiar with alopecia hair loss so perhaps he has something that will help reduce the shedding. Let us know what he says.

Thank you, I will.  And I'll try the fish oil.

Thanks as ever for your help.
