Hello all,

My 1 year and 9 month old pup was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma in his right distal radius (wrist area) last Thursday. His amputation was today and we have heard from the vet that his surgery went well and that he is recovering now (very delighted by this news!).

When we dropped him off this morning the surgeon was unable to talk to us for long as he was set to start another surgery, so we were unable to discuss chemotherapy options for our little guy. But, from most of our research, we figured we had at least a week or two to determine a path forward for this. However, this afternoon when the surgeon called to inform me about how the surgery went he began to talk to me about Chemotherapy options. He said he had asked around and did a bit of research and that it was suggested that they begin a 2 drug chemotherapy treatment 24 hours post operation of Doxorubicin (day one-post op with 24 hour observance) and Cisplatin (day 2 post-op with 24 hour observance).

This came as a bit of a shock as I didn't think I would be having to make a decision on his chemotherapy treatment so soon post op. I am also concerned if doing chemotherapy immediately post op would lead to a higher likelihood of infection at the amputation site.

I am quite stressed about making this decision as I want what is best for my boy. I feel pulled in two directions: 1) to start the chemotherapy immediately to give Huddy the best fighting chance against micrometastisis, and 2) giving him the time he needs to recover and ensure no infection happens at his amputation site.

Has anyone else done or heard of dogs receiving chemotherapy directly (24 hours) after amputation?

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

I'm sorry you are dealing with OSA in you pup- and so young! I'm glad the surgery went well.

What I see here on this site is that when chemo is done it seems to usually start around the second week post op- that's what happened with my pug Maggie, she had mast cell cancer.

But I have seen times when chemo is started right after surgery although I didn't have any luck finding and example with a forum search.

The combo and schedule you mention is quite aggressive, many here with OSA start with carboplatin every two or three weeks.  Is this schedule coming from an oncologist?  I haven't heard of two strong chemo drugs being given on consecutive days- maybe it's a new protocol? Where is Huddy being treated?

Here are the results for a blog search for cisplatin.

Here are the results for a blog search on doxorubicin.

Some of the links are the same in both searches.

From what I have seen here OSA in young dogs seems to be very aggressive- did they mention that to you at all?  Maybe why they want to start chemo right away.

Remember that you are in charge of his treatment.  If you are uncomfortable then I don't think waiting a day or two to get your questions answered is a bad thing.
