so Stella had her first round of chemo. She seemed dizzy late in the evening but ate, drank, pooped ok. Today, Sunday, she seems grumpy but otherwise normal.

Is this normal? She is on her regular dose of pain meds..

Also, where we moved to, does not offer our kibble we feed (Fromms classic), so I am preparing to switch them over to Victors. since I am switching anyways, I now have the option to do high protein/grain free or not. Is there any research or anecdotal stories about grain/protein?

do I need to start her in any supplements while she is on chemo?

Thank you all for the input

Hooray for #1 done!

It is normal for dogs to be tired after chemo.  My Otis slept the remainder of the day of chemo and into the next.  I'm not a vet, but what you describe doesn't seem that alarming.

Your onco will probably tell you to hold off on new supplements right now.  They want to see how Stella reacts to the chemo, and a new supplement could cause symptoms that are hard to separate out.  We started on K9 Immunity after round 3.  Both the onco and my regular vet said that there was no proof that it did anything for osteo, but that it was a safe supplement.

On food, many of us switched to grain free after diagnosis.  Seems to be some science behind that, but I will have to let others chime in with that.  If you have to change anyway, not sure how it would hurt.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

Yay Stella! I'm glad she's rockin' the chemo!

Yep, many dogs are a little tired for the first few days after chemo. That seems normal. if she's eating, drinking and poopin, probably no cause for concern. If anything changes let your vet know.

As for switching food right now and adding supplements, I'm with otisandtess. Definitely wait a bit on the supplements and go very, very slow on that food transition if you can. Especially if going grain-free (click on the link and you'll find our Tripawds Nutrition blog info about it). The theory by vets like Dr. Dressler of the Dog Cancer Survival Guide is that cutting carbs can help fight cancer, because carbs = sugar, and cancer cells love sugar. The less carbs the better. But grain free can be too rich for some dogs, so use care in that transition and of course check with your vet before you switch.

Going through chemo is a time to be extra vigilant should side-effects occur. When food or supplements change, that can complicate trying to pinpoint the cause of any side-effects. Hope that makes sense.

Our oncologist said the same thing, that Murphy should be on grain-free food.  We learned the hard way why you should introduce it slowly poopicon_pngpoopicon_pngpoopicon_png lol

Thank you guys. We will be adding a little bit of grain free victor in her "old" food, to see how she and Mithras can stomach it.. the store gave us a lot of samples so that we can trial it for about a week .

Picture your sweet granpa sitting in a corner, mumbling angrily into his beard instead of being sweet and laughing over the grandkids..

Stella was hanging with us on the couch and once in a while she would just harrumph, huff, to do a 2 sec growl all while having a little rain cloud over her head.

no pictures. She was not in the mood for me to disturb her with moving around on the couch to grab my phone 🙂
