Clyde was on a Fentanyl patch after surgery - my vet warned me that he might be very vocal, and described the difference between a pain cry and a "I'm stoned" cry - he demonstrated by making the noises, so to describe in writing I would say pain cries would be more sharp (like a yelp), while the stoned cries are more like whining/whimpering or almost howling. He'll feel better soon!

Just so you'll know, I've often referred to your post about what your Vet said (or tried to) avout the distinction from pain sounds and stoned sounds . See how that Clyde has a positive impact here?? Yes indeedy, he sure does! 🙂

Thank you for the advice and your sharing your experiences friends! Marleys cries I believe are definitely because he is stoned. That's funny because my Dr. said "stoned" quite a few times today. So far tonight hasn't been too bad (fingers crossed),  we took him out to potty (which he didn't) but he seemed to enjoy the warm air and the wind 🙂 he's now resting on the couch where he always likes to lay... I will be curious tomorrow to see how he acts once the pain patch comes off (if it comes off).

Just catching up with you and handsome Marley. You've been doing a fantastic job and it's great that Marley is seeming more settled. Funnily enough, I've just been dealing with a 'stoned' meds reaction in my quadpawd, who cried all night after having a tooth out. It sounds very much as you are describing. She is absolutely back to normal now. Don't worry re Marley pooping. The Fentanyl patch is very likely to delay this, in my experience, but it's nice that he's been enjoying a little time outside, just feeling in warm air in his coat must do him a world of good.

Do update us once the patch comes off and let us know how Mr Marley is doing. And you too, I hope you are getting some rest.

Sending all pawsitive wishes your way,

Meg, Clare and Elsie Pie xxx

So we got the pain patch removed a few hours ago. He has been starting to hop around a bit today. He followed me into my room 🙂 he's still very whiney, so I hope that will calm down a bit. He still doesn't have the desire to eat, but did walk to his water bowl and took a little drink for the first time! They gave him one last injection into the wound area and drained his bladder. He no longer has any needles or ports in his skin so that's good. Now we are just on pills meds. The doctor is hopeful that removing the pain patch will help him not be so stoned and help bring his appetite back. If he isn't eating by tonight or tomorrow my Dr. said we will come up with a plan B. He said he feels like Marley is a day behind on recovery for where he would have liked him to be, but my little boy has always been a little over sensitive ❤

That's fantastic that he's drunk from his water bowl! Definitely a good sign. Great that he seems more mobile too – though do take care he doesn't overdo it in his desire to hop along after you. As much rest as possible at this stage is really important to help him recover.

Re food. What treats have you tried? A lot of tripawds do need tempting to eat at this stage. Lots of people feed burgers, chicken, greek yoghurt, ice cream and so on. Sometimes cat food works well too. And if you need something to help with the pills, I find sticking them in lumps of liver paté works well for us.

It's great the patch has gone, and the ports etc. too. That's all behind you now. Another step on the road to recovery.

Big hug,

Meg, Clare and Elsie Pie xxx

I have tried lots of treats but he isn't interested. I cooked him hamburger but he didn't want that either. I grilled him a steak and chopped it up this afternoon and he didn't want it, so I know he just isn't feeling it yet. He did lick a little ice cream off my hand earlier but not much. I'm hoping maybe he will want some steak tonight.

Thank you! I will check it out! I did try wet cat food as well (which I know he loves!). We would have to shut the door and lock it to the basement when we weren't home because he would go down there and open the door and go eat the cats food all the time... Not to mention clear the litter box at times too oh-my

I'm so glad to report that Marley is eating the crap out of ice cubes right now! He just keeps wanting more 🙂 🙂 this is the first thing he's been interested in since surgery! I did put a few pieces of steak in front of him, he ate one, so I will just be happy with ice cubes for now... Baby steps.  This really is an emotional rollercoaster, my anxiety has been through the roof for days and as not let up. I still feel a lot of emotions and I still have worry in the back of my head about something coming back. I just have to think positive and have faith that this whole thing is going to help my boy live! We will discuss and start chemo once he is healed up and back on track.

Marley slept the entire night last night and I didn't even have to wake him for his pain med. Also last night before bed he started drinking water from his bowl (a good amount). This morning I still had to use his pill popper for his meds, but after that he did eat some steak from his food bowl. I tried to offer him some wet cat food and he did take a lick but but then wasn't interested. I'm not going to push it though because the last few months he's been kind of goofy about eating. Sometimes I have to leave the kitchen because he doesn't want anyone watching him eat lol. I think his goofiness with eating came about when we got his brother Ziggy. So we tend to feed them one after another and put Ziggy in his crate when it's Marleys turn (Ziggy will eat everything and Marley will let him) But then other times Marley will eat at the same time. Hopefully today he will be feeling a little better. The worst times seem to be in the evening between 5-11.
