Hi Everyone,

This website has been hugely helpful and thanks so much for providing such great resources!  Our four-year-old Great Dane, Quack (yup that's his name) was diagnosed with osteosarcoma February 16th.  The next couple weeks were a blur of second opinions and x-rays and the sadness of reading how aggressive osteosarcoma can be.  After a lot of researching we explored a couple immunotherapy vaccine options and Quack qualified for a clinical trial at Cornell.  He had his amputation surgery March 8th, and had his first round of carboplatin 2 days ago.  So far he's been okay.  He bounced right back from the surgery.  He was really tired the first day after chemo.  He had spent the whole previous day at Cornell getting tests and the chemo which meant he didn't get to do what he usually does which is nap, nap and take another nap. His appetite has been okay.  Today he was asking to go for a walk so we took a short walk with his older "brother" our newfie Bear.  We live on a farm so we just went out in the pasture and both dogs sniffed around and got muddy.   So I'm kind of waiting of the chemo shoe to drop.   Cornell gave us metronidazole  in case he develops diarrhea and Cerenia in case he develops nausea but we have not needed either yet.  We are supposed to start him on antibiotics this Monday.  He goes for blood work this week and the next, then if his white cell count is not too low, chemo again in 3 weeks.  Folks who have done carboplatin, when did you run into problems?  Also how active should I let him be?  His life style tends to be nap nap nap run around like a maniac and then nap.  How restrictive should I be about his running around?  Thanks for any suggestions!

Hi again, I just approved your other post.. so from NOW on you won't have to wait for approval smiley

My pug Maggie had a different cancer and so a different chemo protocol.  Mag had a little nausea once or twice and we had to postpone chemo once (or twice) due to a low WBC which is not unusual.

From what I've seen here most dog's don't have side effects due to chemo- or very mild at best.  As I said- a low WBC sometimes is not unusual.

I was never given any restrictions for Mag during her chemo- our protocol took 6 months.

My Happy Hannah never had any side effects from chemo either.   So Quack may be one of thise who saiks through the treatment with no problems!

I "think" IF sde effect show up, it's "generally" around 3 - 5 days.  You have your anti nausea meds if Quack does show any tummy issues, so your well prepared.

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hi Quack and family 🌺

I LOVE his name and the fact it was a mix of Jack and Quinn, your previous Danes 😂

My girl Eurydice was also a Great Dane who lost her right front leg to osteo.

We did 6 sessions of carboplatin 3 weeks apart and she took Cerenia the day before the chemo and continue for 3 days after.

Much later she also did 3 sessions of doxorubicin which the same Cerenia protocol.

She had zero side effects, no nausea no diarhea and energy levels were the same.

We even did extensive travel between chemo sessions and she was as happy as a grossely oversized bunny 🐰

I would do it all over again without a blink!

And bear in mind if her blood is not good at any point, they will wait until blood cell count is back to normal so no problem.

Sending you an avalanche of kisses and XL hugs to gorgeous Quack 💗😘😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹

Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

I just saw Quack's latest picture on your blog, omd so handsome! Glad he is doing well, you should put that picture up over here for everybody to see that handsome baby winker

I do not have any experience with chemo as Huck's amp was due to a traumatic injury. I am here to wish you well and I hope this journey keeps going smoothly for you. Can't wait to see more pictures of your handsome boys!

Hey Jackie,

I want to get the link to Eurydice's travels here as maybe Quack's family will be interested in seeing how well a Great Dane can do with chemo and in general.

Sadly, my mouse is not working and I am trying to copy the link but I only have the option to copy the title if I do it manually ...

I know you're good at computers, could you try to copy the link here please?

It is in the Anything Goes forum last thread on page 8.

Rocky had five rounds of Carboplatin without any side effects. He did have some low WBC (neutrophils) counts before the fourth and fifth rounds, so we had to push those out a week. But other than that, no issues.

His oncologist said something like 90 percent of her patients never experienced any issues.

David and Rocky (and Baxter now too!)

Rocky had his right front leg amputated on Valentine's Day 2017 after being diagnosed with osteosarcoma.

He joined the September Saints on September 3, 2017.

He is the toughest, bravest, sweetest and best friend I'll ever know.

I found this thread while searching for some answers about carboplatin side effects... Wabs had his first dose yesterday, then came home and pooped on the floor like he couldn't hold it. He also peed twice last night, once in the bed and once by the door -- but didn't cry to be let out, he just let it happen. He's drinking a *ton* more water and hasn't touched dinner or breakfast. I'm jealous of all you guys saying your pups had no side effects. Any suggestions for helping my guy perk back up? It's frustrating because he was finally back to his old self, energy- and appetite-wise, until the chemo started. crying
