CCNU is recommended for our 8 year old lab Shepard who had his leg amputated due to localized histiocytic sarcoma in shoulder joint. Vet says most dogs have no problems with the meds - 5% have negative side effects.  Sounds worth it as it can extend survival time but wondering if anyone here has first hand experience with this oral chemo drug.

i welcome any thoughts!

Hi ~

Murphy was 7 when he was diagnosed with a bone tumor, likely osteosarcoma, and had his right front leg amputated.  By the time he had his surgery, he had been limping for about 5 months because he had been misdiagnosed.  His final biopsy, after amputation, came back as histiocytic sarcoma.  He had 6 doses of CCNU.  He had to have a CBC the week he received it & the week after.  He also had to take denamarin every day to protect his liver - it's like a chewable treat, so he didn't mind.  Michigan State is about a 1 1/2 hour drive for us, and it was an all-day thing when we'd go, so on the days that he got his chemo, Murphy was a little tired, but some of that could have just been from the long day.  He really didn't have any side effects.

When he finished his chemo, the oncologist thought that she found another tumor on Murphy's left shoulder blade.  We declined doing further chemo at that time.  However, further x-rays and exams never showed any growth.

We were told that Murphy's prognosis was 12-18 months if we were lucky.  Well, we are just 2 1/2 weeks shy of celebrating 4 years since his surgery and he's still here!  He moves a bit slower, more stiffly.  But he eats every day, and he can run after a squirrel if he wants to lol.  He has a harder time jumping into the car, but with our help he can get there and he loves going for car rides.  He takes Carprofen when he needs it, and he started seeing a chiropractor to help.

We know that we have been extremely blessed.  Hopefully, you can have as much good time as we have been given.

Murphy had his right front leg amputated due to histiocytic sarcoma at 7 years old. He survived 4 years, 2 months & 1 week, only to be taken by hemangiosarcoma at 11 1/2 years 6/12/17

My dog Izzy is undergoing CCNU (lomustine) and vinblastine treatment. First dose was rough on her about 4 days in, with most noticeable impact about a week later. Based on the CBC done at 7 days post, the onco decided to reduce the dose. W

We're not seeing great results, which seems unusual, but we are dealing with a mast cell tumor that responded quickly and extremely well to Palladia then blew up and just hasn't really reduced. Only a couple of doses in but it does seem very well tolerated. My dog is very old, so I'd say if she can handle it, your "pup" will do just fine!!

Good luck 🙂

Momma to the world's most beautiful American Bulldog, Izzy!! Lost her front leg to OSA 9/18/15. Diagnosed w MCT in June 2016. Celebrated her 1 year ampuversary with knee surgery on 9/18/16! MCT recurrence in Dec 2016. Happy & hungry til nearly 14, earning her wings on 7/31/17.

Many members have reported their experiences with CCNU and other metronomics treatment therapies...
