Hi everyone.  Today has been a tough day.  After 2 doses of Palladia this week, my poor guy seems to be shutting down.  He had a great day Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, but Wednesday, he seemed a little off.  Yesterday, he spent the majority of the day sleeping, but perked up in the afternoon.  This morning, he had difficulty getting up to go outside.  I resorted to getting the sling back out.  He made it outside and has been just laying on the floor, periodically lifting his head to look for me.  I just called my husband at work and told him I think we need to have "that" conversation.  I am heartbroken.  But as sad as I am for myself, my husband, my kids, and his feline siblings, I know I have to do what is best for him.  I honestly feel the Palladia has had a part in this.  He has gone downhill so fast since Sunday.  My oncologist thinks its just progression of the Osteosarcoma. Has anyone had any similar experiences with Palladia?  I feel so guilty in that I was the one who administered that drug to him!  I am at a loss as I look at my once vibrant boy, just laying on my bathroom floor. Please keep Eddy in your prayers for me.  I am praying for a miracle!!!  ~Betsy

Betsy Golden and Angel, Eddy.  Eddy was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma 7-23-14, had a left rear amputation 8-07-14, had 3 rounds of carboplatin chemotherapy,  a small lung met was discovered in October, had 2 rounds of doxorubicin, and unfortunately more lung mets were discovered.  Eddy fought cancer valiantly and went to the Rainbow Bridge 1-6-15, at the age of 7 years and 359 days, just six days short of his 8th birthday.   Best Dog, Ever....you will never be forgotten.

I am sooooo sorry to read this.  I wish I had some words of comfort for you but I know how hard this is. It's hard when they seem to go downhill so quickly. My Shelby did as well (different cancer but still). She was fine and the boom, she was not and you know how our story ends.

I am not a vet so I don't want to offer any help in that respect but I do hope that you will not beat yourself up. You didn't know. You have done everything for Eddy and gone above and beyond to give him the best fighting chance. Maybe he'll perk up once the palladia is out of his system? I don't know much about this drug so I am sure others will chime in.

But you are not alone ... we are all here supporting you and sending you positive energy and lots of prayers!!!

Hugs and love,

alison with the spirit of shelby fur-ever in her heart (and little jasper too)

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Don't give up yet.  Try to treat Eddy as normal as possible. Give it a little time, and have the conversation when the time is right.  The conversation should be with Eddy. Let him guide you. My thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

I've been where you are.  Don't second guess your choices.  We make the choices based on what we believe is right at the time given what we already know. Accept that it was the best choice at the time, regardless of how it seems today.

Sending you strength and courage, and healing thoughts for Eddy.  Don't be afraid to consult with your vet, their job is to help guide us.

Hi Sweet Betsy.....you may want to start a thread asking for specific information on side effects of Palladia, how longnthey last, etc. I was real l y hoping y ou would have some first hand informationn on aide effects and how long they last, etc.

It does seem like this is related to the Pallladia and it may be that you just have to "wait it outz" until it gets out lf his system. Please update when you can.

So glad Eddy has been showing his "Eddyness" until th i s little setback. All paws crossed thatnhis sparkle returns soo!

Sending love,

Betsy, is there any chance that the behavior is related to the Palladia? Please don't beat yourself up, you are doing your absolute best and giving him every chance. Hopefully he will start to feel better and perk up. Have you been able to give him anti-nausa meds, or an appetite stimulant?

Here are a few posts about Palladia, many have mentions about side effects their dogs experienced.

Hi Betsy,

Yeah, I agree with what Sally and Jerry were saying about possible side effects to Palladia, all our pups and kitties re-act differently to medications, and this could be a negative reaction......I do want you to know, that you are doing great with Eddy, and let him get past this and see if indeed his sparkle returns. Don't give up on him until Eddy says so, and believe me, you will know. Maybe going a holistic route would be better for your sweet guy, but if you choose to stop everything, that is perfectly ok, too. We all have our limits to what we can do, and can no longer do, but everything is still with our beloved pet's best interest in our hearts.

Thinking of you and sweet Eddy, hang in there,
{{{Hugs}}}

We have been off the palladia for 3 days now, and Eddy has regained his "Eddyness"!  He was very lethargic and was having trouble getting up and walking.  Now, he is MUCH better!  So, I am attributing his reaction as negative side effects to the Palladia. I am going to give Eddy a two week hiatus from the Palladia and all of his other cancer related meds.  We are leaving on our trip the day after Christmas and I just want him to be as happy and comfortable as he can be while we are gone. Our 24 year old nephew will be staying in our home with him.  I realize this may not help in extending his time, but I could not continue administering that drug to him when I saw what it was doing to him.  We have a consult January 2nd with our oncologist, and we will see then if there is anything else we can do.  For now, it is "quality over quantity"!

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR THE BEST REBOUNDER IN TOWN!!!! Eddy, you really are doing a great job of showing us what the "ups and downs" of this hourney look like!!! And we love it when you do the UP part!!!clap

I try not to do things like I'm about to do.....but I'm REALLY glad you're holding off on the Palladia, for now anyway! Hese feeling good...he's sympton free...and I know all of yoj are thrilled!!

Yeah, no matter what extended time in e gets...and I'm just talking in general....but if you're sick for one week to get two good weeks...may not be worth the trade off...just depends on the level of "sickness" I guess.

Glad you are having a little get awah at Christmas and I know Eddy will be fine being spoiled by your nephew!

SOOOO GLAD FOR EDDYNESS!!!

Have a wonderfully relaxing trip!!!

Love!

I'm so happy to hear that Eddy is doing better.  I haven't signed in to Tripawds in forever but something drew me here today as this was the time of year that our Hunter was diagnosed with osteosarcoma back in 2010.  And this was the very first post at the top of the page that I saw which seemed somewhat appropriate because Hunter tried Palladia during her course of treatment and had a terrible reaction to it.  In a nutshell, she couldn't move.  They tried a lower dose, same problem.  She was involved in a clinical trial and was pulled from the trial because she couldn't tolerate Palladia.  The great news though was that she did so well on the other course of treatment minus the Palladia and had a clean cancer-free bill of health until she died.  Eddy's symptoms from Palladia sound just like Hunter's.  I'm glad you stopped it and that he bounced right back like Hunter did.  I wish him all the best.

Hunter's Journey

Hunter – 12 yo female Rottie/Lab mix

Diagnosed with a fracture in an osteosarcoma on 12/23/10 (right rear leg)

Amputation on 12/29/10

7-Month Ampuversary on 07/29/11 – clean bill of health, great blood work and clear chest x-rays

Hunter gained her wings and flew free on 08/19/11
