Brodie is 10 year old golden retriever. He had his back leg amputated in August due to bone cancer.  He's been going through chemo since September. He has been responding very well to chemo (no side effects)  In December x-rays were done on his lungs.  They found 1 very small spot.  X-rays done two weeks ago, found two more spots.  So now he is on Palladia.  Gave him a dose on Tuesday  and on Sunday. Saturday he started experiencing lameness in his back leg.  By Monday he couldn't  even get around. We have to use the harness on him so he can get around outside.  We took him to the vet yesterday, they took X-rays.  No signs of cancer or anything .  Talked to his oncologist she said it's probably from the Palladia.  Has anyone experienced this with their dog and how long did the lameness Last?  My heart breaks for Brodie, he is having such a hard getting around.  Thanks!

Wow!   We were on palladia only a very short time.   When we started, I did post a thread called palladia or something (about August 2016), and several members who had been on it for a period of time responded.   In particular, Izzy has been on it for quite a while - her mom posts under izzysmama I think.   You might want to pm her for experiences (although I do not recall anyone mentioning that particular side effect).   Does the onco think it is temporary?

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

I know I read this somewhere just recently. Was it Rosie maybe? Rnbsmom ? I know this exact same thing came up so apparently it's not unheard of! Including the Palladia.  Maybe google it, too.

did the vet say you can stop the Palladia? Maybe all will get better if you do!?

All the best

Yes, we stopped the Palladi.  Brodie is on Deramaxx and Gabapentin for pain.  Apparently Palladia causes muscle pain which in turn causes the lameness.  Oncologist doesn't think its temporary.  We are giving him to Monday, then I have to call them back about his progress.  Prayers

Hang in there! The Gabapentin and Deramaxx should help.

Have no insight into Palladia, but find it hard to believe that this is permanent once you stop the Palladia. Has he only had two doses??

You may want to get a second opinion. Hopefully others can continue to chime in with more insight.

Other than this issue, sweet Brodie has been doing well? Eating, Drinking, etc being his happy self?

Hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Darn I"m sorry to hear that, it's got to be so tough on all of you. How are you helping him get around?

As for Palladia, I did find some info about Palladia and lameness. Not here, but in this blog post by Dr. Demian Dressler of the Dog Cancer Survival Guide . Scroll through the comments and you'll find a few people who reported the same issue. The GOOD news is that from what I've read, the lameness IS temporary.

Lameness and muscle cramping were observed in a small percentage of dogs although this resolved and did not recur. -- New England Veterinary Group

and also

Other less commonly reported side effects are temporary lameness (difficulty moving) and lethargy (lack of energy), but these issues will often resolve on their own. -- The Veterinary Cancer Group

How is Brodie otherwise? Is he eating? Drinking? How are his spirits?

I researched a bit on palladia a few years ago and the reported lameness in back and back legs was one of the reasons I chose not to use it with my quad-pug Tani who had mast cell cancer (palladia was originally released for mast cell cancer in dogs). Tani had arthritis in her back and back legs as well as epilepsy from hydrocephalus so her mobility was already compromised.

As I recall the lameness went away when the palladia was stopped.

I am traveling now without a good internet connection otherwise I would look for the info I had found on side effects.

It doesn't sound like Brodie was on palladia for very long? Hopefully when the meds are out of his system he will feel better. Remember to be patient- I assume he hasn't been moving much so will need some time to get strong again.

You may want to PM  Lisa and Angel Pofi  ( hester) who elected to try Palladia. Also, although unusual, some dogs develop Multi Drug Syndrome which complicates meds and dosages. If the Palladia was the newest thing, and then the complication arose, Palladia is likely the cause of the complication. Once stopped, things should improve! Best wishes, hugs, and PyrPaws all around!

Hi.  So sorry to hear of what's going on with Brodie!  It's heartbreaking.  My golden Rosie is going through the same exact thing.  Except the drug she was on instead of Paladia was Dastinab, which is very similar, just newer.

3 months post amp Miss Rosie was diagnosed with 20+ lung nodes.  She only completed 3 of 5 rounds of chemo.  Onco recommended Dastinab to hopefully slow or reverse mets.  After 2 doses she got lame in right rear leg.  She has been trying to walk on 2 left legs.  Not so good or easy.  Anyway, stopped Dastinab and lameness mostly went away.  Took her back to vet who gave her days to live due to mets. She suggested we throw everything at her to see if anything would help. She suggested I re-start the Dastinab at an even higher dose.  After 2 days she was lame again.  Onco says it's arthritis not from Dastinab.  I disagree.  It's been a week since last dose and this mormning she was able to get up on her own.  Big progress.

Yesterday Onco gave her Adequan and another IV Zoledronic which has few side effects and has been shown to have positive action against OSA and lung mets. She also prescribed Codeine in addition to Gabapentin and Rymadyl.

My plan is to give it a week to see if the lameness resolves.  If it doesn't I will reevaluate quality of life.

If Brodie were mine I'd consider stopping Paladia and giving him time to revover.  Harnesses aren't too tough.  Rosie uses one these days too.  I am not a Dr or Vet and only am speaking to my unique experiences.  Every dog is different.

Best wishes and lots of pawsitive energy to you and Brodie.

Brodie seems to be doing a little bit better.  He walked around a little this morning and then just sat down. His leg is still weak. He is off the Palladia.

Thank you for the information.  Brodie is eating and drinking.  And his spirits are real good!☺

So glad to hear that Brodie is doing better.  It took about a week for Rosie's lameness to resolve.   The 2nd time it's taking longer.

But every day is a bit better!!!

you may want to ask your vet about Zoledronic via IV. It is used for osteoporosis on humans and has had some positive effect on dogs with OSA and lung mets.

Best wishes!!!
