Does Chemo change the reaction to heat?

We are new to the site, Rusty had his amputation on January 25th and is 2 months into Chemo with 4 months to go.  We will see our Oncologist next Monday and will ask him the same question but I was wondering if any othe members have noticed a change in their dogs reaction to warmer weather.  Being in the desert, we are getting temps into the upper 80's this week with our first 90 degree day; Rusty, who enjoyed being out in the warm weather last summer, avoids going outside during the day and on our morning walks he heads for the shady side of the street.  Obviously he is not likeing the warmer weather.

Chuck and Rusty,

The short answer is that chemotherapy does change the way animals (including humans) react to temperature. A more common complaint in humans and something that I definitely saw in Miss Cherry, was a susceptibility to cold. (This is the reason I made her three specially modified sweaters – no left fore-leg hole.) However, there is no reason to believe that it would be different for heat. Their little bodies have been insulted by the (necessary) chemicals, which causes changes in many things. Another problem that many have reported is a degradation of the immune system. Some have even gone onto antibiotics on a continuous basis.

Also, congadulations on making past the 2 month ampuversary. We here at this site love to celebrate each and every such milestone. Good news is always appreciated so PLEASE post under Share-Your-Story when Rusty makes the 3 month mark.

Best Wishes and Sending Pawsitive Thoughts,

Spirit Cherry's Dad

We don't have any direct experience with IV chemo, so we look forward to hearing what the oncologist has to say.
