Sammy's staple removal is monday.  I am not sure if this will be a hard day for him?  What do I give him afterwards if it is very painful? Did your pups do okay with this?

Sammy will most likely be a lot more comfortable with the staples gone. Congratulation on putting this important milestone behind you!

If anything, should Sammy seem uncomortable, consider some very light massage or hot/cold therapy to relieve any itching or pain.

Thank you!  I am thrilled we are going to be through with this part.  I just don't want Sammy having any more pain.  I want to hear him talk to me like he is famous for.  I haven't heard his growling, throaty whines or seen his happy happy dance since the operation.

Since you are on this page… If I were to try a blog is it easy to upload video's?  Easy for a person with computer heebie jeebies?

Hi Elizabeth –

I can speak for us & say it wasn't a big deal. I thought we were done removing all the staples & felt this little bump. So I picked at it and it was a staple that was buried under because Zak's skin had begun to heal 'over' it. We had to do a little digging for that one. I just held him & we got it out.

Even with that little hiccup, it was not big deal.. I think once the staples are out, they begin to feel even more like themselves again.

Wishing you the best on Monday -

Jenna & Zak

Our staple removal was a very No Big Deal.  But my vet had to get out his magnifying glass to make sure he'd gotten them all…man there were a lot!

Don't know what dogs feel, but I have had staples and their removal was not more than a slight pinchy feeling. It is so nice once they are out!!!!!!

Shelby actually had a LONG running stitch (ouch) and not so much as a flinch out of her.

I can tell you that once those stitches were out, it was a whole new game…..my Tropical Storm Shelby was BACK and thank God, it's been uphill since.  She's almost been upgraded to a Category 4!

Good luck with Sammy…..he'll feel SO much better.

He's a labbie, right?  If so, I completely understand those labbie noises….they are so unique, aren't they?

They will probably take Sammy into the treatment area to remove his staples, so you won't have to see if it hurts him or not :)  Once the staples are out, he will be a LOT more comfortable (could you imagine having staples or stitches in you?  It would be so itchy!!!) and all you'll have left to deal with is a big happy dog.  Good Luck!!

When Chloe had her staples removed, they took her to the other room.  Since our clinic is not huge, I could see through the door that opened once in a while (when someone walked through it) Chloe being held by one person while the other person took out the staples.  From my brief viewings, she was calm, didn't struggle and didn't appear to be in discomfort.

Afterward, she was her normal bubbly, goofy self! I think that having them out helped her feel more comfortable rolling from one side to laying on her amputated side.  A couple days post amp she tried this, but yelped in pain because I think the external staples and/or internal sutures were "tugged" when she twisted.  Needless to say, she had no problem rolling on her back on the lawn a couple days after they were removed!!!

I am glad to hear all of these responses.  I also can't wait for the point I am not anxiously searching his face and listening to each whine to see if he's in pain.

shelby'smom,  He is a newfoundland mix.  I don't know with what.  His nose looks like that because of the camera angle not because of his form.  I am really short and he is really tall and he walked up to me in the sunshine smiling so I snapped the photo. I was standing on the edge of our back step and he came and put his front feet on the step too.  I know the image is distorted, but I love his eyes and smile and shine of his coat.  It is so hard to get detailed pictures of black dogs.  You have to have incredible lighting.  I took it with my cell phone.smiley

Sorry, I can't respond to the removal – Trouble had all internal, dissolving stitches, looked like a plastic surgeon did her surgery.  Now that I know how uncommon that is, I wish I had a good close up pic.

Trouble did have staples many years ago now, that had to be removed when the skin around them became inflamed.  Because of the skin condition, they gave her a quick acting IV sedative, removed the staples, and another IV injection to wake her up.  It was all done in less than 10 minutes.

I was really dreading Takoda's staple removal because in the past she had issues with vets touching her legs and paws and generally she isn't a big fan of nail trims, brushing, etc. and I thought it might fall into one of those categories or worse.

It turned out to be an easy event! The vet had some trouble finding all of the many staples and stitches because her fur had started to grow back, but she rested happily while he took them all out and never even flinched. Afterward she had a big smile and lots of energy. I'm sure she was much more comfortable!

Hope things go as well for Sammy!

I know when i had my staples removed it was absolutly nothing, they was uncomfortable in because they kept getting hung on everything, but taking them out was so easy that the dr even let me little sister take out a couple and she was only 10 at the time, didnt hurt at all, stitches can be a pain to remove but the the skin doesnt really grow into the staples and they come out smooth if they are not left in for more than recomended

Upon getting the call to go to work MY dog sits proud as I stand at attention I salute my director Place my hand back to my side Then I say in a PROUD and STRONG voice "Mr.Squishy, reporting for duty, Sir."
