Oooooh, he's brindle!  I love that coloring!  He is a handsome boy.

I have small stairs up to the bed and stairs or stools near every piece of furniture the dogs are allowed on.  I've had small dogs for years, each with some type of mobility challenge so stairs are a fact of life around here, I build most of the ones I use. Both of my current dogs can jump up on some of the furniture even though I discourage it.

He sounds like he is doing very well!  Remember to keep the activity to a minimum.  Our surgeon said Maggie was only allowed on short, leashed potty breaks for the first two weeks.  Maggie became quite a slug during her recovery so keeping her quiet wasn't an issue at all!.  Elly was 7 months old when she lost her leg, the rescue group dealt with the surgery and recovery.  It must have been really hard to keep her quiet!

I'm a big advocate for games and puzzles too- Elly does some every day and quad pug Obie joins in sometimes too.

If Toby's grandparents are anything like my dog's grandparents I think he will be spoiled just finebig-grin

Hi! So we made it to the vets and back with only a minor setback (more to follow on that), and the vets think he's doing great 😊 they say he's recovering incredibly fast, they're really impressed. So he'll be on his pain meds until at least Monday next (which will be 13 days post surgery) when he'll get his stitches out all being well. The minor setback: I was leaning over him to put his harness on him, and was trying to support him while I lifted his front paw - he obviously got hurt somehow because he growled and snapped at my arm! He didn't properly bite but was very unimpressed 😒 he's never EVER EVER done a thing like that before, so I must have really hurt him somehow, and in the end we put the harness on him while he was lying down. It kind of shook me up and made me feel guilty at the same time. So much to learn in all this - lesson 1 - healing pets get harness on lying down! Never mind. All is well now and he's resting on his bed in the living room with me, after a mostly triumphant vet trip.

I asked about gabapentin and the vet said he doesn't think he needs it right now as he's not showing signs of needing it - apparently it's something they would need to order in as they don't prescribe it often. I think I'll keep an eye on his pain levels and review if we need to.

I also asked about his lump on his front paw, which is right on the knuckle, and the vet said he doesn't think it was there the day of the surgery 3 days ago, so he thinks maybe he's strained himself a bit... I'm going to give him plenty of rest and keep a close eye on it. Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks Jackie and Huckleberry, I know it'll be ok. I can get a bit intense about these things - anxiety is something that I'm good at lol. I'll definitely be out every day to help after work and see my boy ☺️ mum and dad have alot to balance with looking after the dogs (3 in total, Toby included) and babysitting my sister's son 2 days a week, they are STARS.

Clare - what a FAB set up with those boxes! I've found them online and will be ordering them tomorrow. Great plan. I'm so glad you think so, he is of course the sweetest little thing in my eyes lol. Elsie was so gorgeous, what a lovely girl - my little lady at home is a staff x lab, she's simply adorable and a right little handful! The weather looks set to be gorgeous here today again, here's Toby sunbathing in it yesterday:

Thanks for the reassurance all, I know he'll be fine really. I'll be out each day to check up on him and I'm sure things will get better. You've all been SO KIND and I will be sending regular updates 😊

Glad to hear he is hanging in there. Do you think that lump of his is painful? When you took his paw to put his harness on maybe that is what is hurting him? Of course it just might be post operative pain and soreness. It could have been the paw you took, the opposite paw because of the extra weight with one paw up, or his back leg, which is getting used to his new balance. I agree you would be good to monitor things and keep watch. They really don't like to show pain so it might come out in odd ways.

I love the picture! Oh he is such a handsome boy, and the weather looks beautiful there 🙂 Nice that he can go soak up the sun and get fresh air.

Thank you for the update, he looks great heart

Loooooving that picture! Being outside sunbathing is always healing!

Continue to keep thenpain meds consistent and not let the pain get a head start.  His little "attitude" with makes me thing he is feeng pain a d just trying to protect himself, as with any nimal,he feels vulnerable when "wounded".

Contnue to maintain a strong and confident upbeat attitude.  Cricket will get through this!  Recovery doesn't last furever, it just seems like it sometimes. And yeah, watching the lump as theBet described isgood.  And the Rimadyl shoukd help also.

You're doing a great job!-!  And Imlove that yiur Grandpawrents are uch great "dog people"! 🙂

Hugs to you and the Grandpawrents too! 🙂

Hi all. Toby's first night with the grandpawrents seems to have gone smoothly, he slept well apparently and has eaten nicely. We're out here again now to spend the day with him and give them a break for a while. He's pretty chipper, but I do have a couple of questions for you all if that's ok :

1- every now and then he'll be walking around and then the wound will suddenly seem to bother him. He starts running in circles and trying to lick it. No yelping or whining at all, just sudden violent attempts to lick. At first I thought phantom pain , but as there's no whining/yelping, could it be itching instead? Did your dogs do this??

2- he's eating well, and did a tiny 💩 outside on day 3, but NOTHING since. We are now the morning of day 5. Should I be worried? Is it normal? He's had lots of water, he's not on his usual kibble but a mixture of scrambled eggs, home cooked food, and some Lily's Kitchen tins. How long can he not 💩 for without us worrying?

I've attached some photos for you. I'm going to try to sign mum up to the forum later so she can get on here when she needs to.

Hope you're all well, pawrents and fur babies alike!

Good morning Katherine, Toby and Grandpawrents

iti sounds like all is going super well over in Toby Land! The pictures are brilliant and I love Roby’s eating dishes. Very stylin’

The sudden need to lick on Toby’s back End could be a simple as a stitch poking into him. I remember my stitches used to do that too every now and again. But it could also be episodes of phantom pain . Maybe check in with your vet and see what they say.

The fact that you have had a little poo so far is brilliant! But if he goes any longer without a proper poo, check in with your vet.

Keep up the good healing and all the very best to your family. Enjoy the day!

Good morning Katherine and Toby and family,

Those are great pictures! I love the raised feeder, that is really nice and it makes it so much easier for him.

I would definitely try to pay attention to how often he is running after his incision. He doesn't necessarily need to yelp but when they suddenly drop what they are doing it could be a sign. Like Petra said, it also may be a suture or staple that pinches him if he moves a certain way. If you see him not actively moving and just all of a sudden jump after it, that might be a phantom limb indicator.

If he does not have a lot of food going in, he won't have a lot coming out either. The meds can sometimes also have a bit to do with this. I would just keep an eye on him, hopefully he will produce another poop today. A couple of days should not hurt anything. Some of us have had furbabies that have gone up to 6 or 7 days before they saw the first poop.

Has he had any more issues of snapping with anybody? Are your folks doing ok with his harness?

I am glad his first night went so well clap He is a lucky boy to have all of his humans taking such good care of him winker

Hi Jackie and Huckleberry!

Toby's Grandma here. Just joined and reading the whole thread my daughter started. Lots of good advice from everyone. Re the snapping and harness--no, haven't used the harness at all now. I don't want to hurt him. I wouldn't be able to take him to the vets myself in any event, as he's a big strong dog (even on 3 legs!) and I'm somewhat unsteady with my arthritic legs. Toby hasn't snapped at me or anyone else since that episode with Katherine. He's never been a snappish dog. When I take him outside, I use an extendable lead. We had a good first night together in the spare bedroom, possibly as he's accustomed to sleeping in my bedroom, though with the other dogs as well. The medicine has not been a problem, eithersmileyMany thanks to all you lovely people with tripawds, on earth or over the Rainbow Bridge. XX

He looks great in those pictures!

Welcome Toby's Grandma!  Grandparents are the best!  My mom and Tripug Maggie had a special bond that only got stronger after Mag's amp for mast cell cancer.

Maggie didn't poop until day 6 or 7 post op- the pain meds usually cause some constipation.  You can use some olive oil or canned pumpkin (plain pumpkin, not the kind for pie) to help things get moving.  As always discuss what you are seeing with your vet.

How active is Toby right now? Our surgeon said only short, leashed potty breaks for the first two weeks after surgery.  Does he suddenly go after his incision when he is laying down and resting? That often happens with phantom pain .  If he only does it when he is moving then maybe he is being too active at this point- sutures pulling or some muscle soreness or spasms as he is moving around.  If it persists be sure and talk with the vet.

Hi I read your post and have so much empathy! We are on day 3 post surgery and Jack our 8 yr old mini schnauzer has been home for 24 hr. The first 12 were rough and things aren't perfect but we're getting into a rhythm and we are writing everything down. He has 4 meds and they all need to be taken with food and that's a tall order! He likes scrambled eggs and I made him some chicken and put a little broth in his water and he liked that. He cried a lot yesterday and today he only groans a little when he moves. He hopped on 3 legs prior to surgery due to a large tumor on his paw. He tucked the bad leg up and didn't really use it. Now he will need to work to find his standing balance but my hope is that he was part way there prior to surgery. I'll be thinking of you - this site is a fantastic find!

Grandma and Toby,

Welcome Grandma!!! I am so glad to hear that Toby's not snappy, that can be a huge indicator of pain and protection over his "wound". I'm so glad you joined us here clap

I'm glad he's getting around ok without his harness,  makes it easier for you right now.

So glad things are going smoothly, and I'm tickled that you came in and posted!

Hugs,

Jackie and Huckleberry ❤️
