Cooper is not well. He had his 4th chemotherapy the Monday before Thanksgiving, so about a week and a half ago. His symptoms, panting, standing like it is uncomfortable to lay down, slight tempature, shaking. When it started we did blood work and all was ok and still is. The vet gave an antibiotic and tramadol for pain. 12 hours later he seemed fine. After 3 days it started again. He is at vets on oxygen and IV. His x rays look normal. My vet thinks there must be a mass somewhere but doesn't advice sending him for ultrasound as he is under so much stress. We are out of town. Has anyone had this happen? He is recommending putting him down if he doesn't improve in 24 hours but would keep him comfortable until we came home. Any advice?

I have just done 15 or 20 minutes worth of researching online of those symptoms but could not pin down any one cause of what this could be all together as whole set of symptoms that would make sense. It is peculiar (but good) that all bloodwork is normal but according to a lot of these sites, elevated fever with chemo usually means a low white blood count or some type of infection but you said the bloodwork was ok. When they did the X-rays was it just in the chest? I hope by the time you get home things have settled down and he is feeling better. Sorry to hear this and I know how hard it must be that you are away from him while he is going through this. Keep us updated.

Thanks for researching! I have to and agree! We did full x-rays of lungs/heart and abdomen. Nothing showed up. All looked great. I just don't want to jump to conclusions. And yes, I just want to get on a plane and go to him!

I don't have any ideas to add but just wanted to say I hope he feels better. I know how frustrating and scary that is to be out of town when your fur baby is not well.

Feel better, Cooper!
Jackie, Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. We are so darn sorry! I wish we could help or give some advice but we are just clueless about what to do. Stay in close contact with your vet and hopefully he'll feel better so there can be some other options to figure out what's going on. {{{{hugs]}}}

It's pretty rare, but occasionally animals (and people, too) have really adverse reactions to a specific med, and the more they receive of it, the worse the reactions become. If there are no masses showing up in x-rays and all the bloodwork looks good, then it could just be a toxicity to the meds. I would definitely ask about that, and in your research check for this sort of thing in side effects. A note of caution, though — most canine studies don't do a full listing of all the side effects possible for a specific drug. They list a couple of the most common and say that "other less common effects were noted." It's pretty generic, and unless you have a subscription to the veterinary journals, no amount of internet searches will clue you in on what additional effects were found. I've found a lot of data in the human drug trial info that was missing from the canine study papers. The human trials are required to list out all of the side effects and the number of population affected.
