OfflineWell, friends, Cooper had his second surgery today, the wait at work for the call was long and hard. But at 12:38 the vet called and said the surgery had gone very well. the rest of the upper leg was removed and the whole area cleaned up. and a drain put in. I just finished reading Fancys post and it sounds like Coopers situation was very much the same. there was a lot of infected muscle that had to be removed, his incisiion had also kept bleeding at the beginning and as the incision healed it stopped , but when that bone poked through it released more blood and began again ( hence my post the other night, how much is too much ) I guess in retrospect, the fact that the bone poked through was good because from what I understand the infection must have been closed up in there and spreading much like Fancys post said. Had the hole not opened up it may have gotten much worse before I knew anything was wrong. Coops grandma had to stop by the vet this afternoon to pick up frontline for my brothers dog – and she learned that Cooper is making everyone at the clinic earn their keep, they say he is just fine as long as they stand and talk to him and pet him. they finally gace Coop a radio and he laid down to nap. I know Cooper was in much less pain after the first surgery after having been freed from the pain of the cancer, and I am anxious to see how much better he is when he comes home again. Sounds like he will be coming home tomorrow. Even with this infected muscle – he had slept so much more peacefully than when he had the cancer in the leg. the doctor told me he was already sitting up and restless to be up on the move after surgery this morning so that sounds great considering it took a good 3 days before he did much after surgery number 1. Coops mom and I are wating anxiously for Coopers big hugs and kisses when he comes home! We will let everyone know as soon as there is more to update on. Thanks EVERYONE for all the crossed paws, prayers and encouragement. I told Coops mom tonight how wonderful you all are.

OfflineSounds good. And it does sound like Coop and Fancy are on somewhat the same path. Not a good start to tripawdness, but hopefully the worst is behind you now and you can get on with the healing!
Looking forward to hearing that Coop is home and on the mend.

OfflineWow, how totally strange that we had two members with the same kinds of surgical situations, at nearly the same time. It makes for a bonding experience, doesn't it?
Glad to hear he's doing well and that now Cooper's on the real path to recovery. He'll handle this like the champ he is, I know it.
Rest up, and good luck tomorrow!

OfflineThat is one of the best post surgery reports I've seen. Cooper demanding attention is just too funny. And to get his own radio for company, that is a quick thinking vet crew! I love the vet's offices that will try anything to get the patient comfortable. Sounds like Cooper is well cared for.
Hope you got your sleep last night because I suspect he is going to be up and about at his normal routine when he gets home. No rest then.

Sounds great. At least your vet acknowledged there was a problem, I am assuming you used the same vet that did the initial surgery. I know the feeling about the cancer pain, Gus was the same way, so much better right after surgery. Back to normal in no time!!!!, it's the getting back that kills ya'. Good luck, Paws up, Spirit Gus and Dan
Yay for some good news for Cooper!! Chloe had to undergo anesthesia about 2 weeks after her amp for a nasty tooth to be removed…I know its no fun putting your dog under again.
Glad to hear the bad stuff is off and that he is on the road to recovery, for real this time!!!

OfflineWell, that's fantastic news!
You know, I'm starting to wonder if general medicine vets are not proficient in amputations? (anyone feel free to correct me) I asked my vet if he had a lot of experience with 3-legged dogs and he honestly took too long to answer and gave me a text book sounding answer.
So, it makes me think that they aren't experienced and therefore they are only human when it comes to problems such as Coop's and Fancy's problem. I just wondering out loud…
Anyway, get well Coop! We need you to get better soon. Your mom and dad need their Coop around to love on!

OfflineMy opinion, Comet, is that vets are no different than human doctors. Some of them you are comfortable going to for a cold, but wouldn't consider letting them treat you for cancer.
Trouble's vet was not a specialist and he did an outstanding job, but I think he holds himself to a high standard. He oozes confidence and I think does tons of research from some of the conversations we've had. Trouble has had three other vets over her lifetime and I can't see myself letting any of the three perform the surgery. Just as with human doctors, 1/2 the vets graduated in the bottom 50% of their class.
