Sorry just saw your reply. Yes he is off the Reglan. This is all still first chemo. He was really great the 2nd and 3rd day after chemo (first 24hrs terrible) and now 4th and 5th bad again.

You poor thing! I know this is so disheartening! TRY not to get discouraged! Okay, I know that's asking a lot, but try.

IF I'm reading the posts right, he felt really good the morning before he had his chemo.

The night kf the chmo he was whining and kind of spacey.

You dropped the Reglan.

Around day three he showed improvement, had a good night's sleep and you felt like he was improving.

Then going into day four or five, he's lethargic and not eating.

Sooooo....it could be that what he's experiencing today is more along the lines of some of the side effects from chemo that dogs experience around day 4 or 5.

What he was experiencing the first 24 hrs may have been the Reglan possibly. Although, it sounds like he was eexperiencing some pain and that would be a bit unusual. I guess that could still be the Reglan though.

On top of everything else, the Onco started him in chemo while fighting an infection and after having his second surgery in less than two weeks! His sytem is dealng with a lot!

And we also have another Wild Card...possibly. Charlie's on TWO antibiotics. They coukd DEFINITELY cause nausea and lack of appetite. Perhaps you coukd call the Surgeon...NOT the Onco....and ask about cutting one, or both of the antibiotics out. Only if it's safe of course!

Can you take Charlie's temperature?? He sure doesn't need a fever thrown into the mix!

Oh, were you able to get the Cerenia? In fact, if not, I woukd keep calling all the different Vet until you can get it! YOU are Charlie's best advocate and you are paying a lot of dollars to all these doctors! They need to listen to you and give Charlie what he needs!

Okay...deep breaths...both of us!! I'm getting all fired up over here too must thinking abput what you and Charlie have been through!!! B R E A T H E!!!

Now, we do have to continue to celebrate that the second surgery took Charlie out of pain!! HUGE VICTORY!!

If his current "issue" is related to the chemo, he should be feeling better in another dayish.

Is the Surgeon the one you strust the most...or maybe Charlie's regular Vet? Anyway, I know Charlie hates going to the Vet, but he may need a dose of fluids and some blood work up just for reassurance.

You can get through this! Charlie WILL get better!!! And he has shown improvement since his second surgery and that's huge!! CHARLIE WILL HAVE LOTS OF QUALITY TIME COMING HIS WAY!!

Grab the CHOCOLATE and TRY and get some rest.

I would definitely ask for the Cerenia now.  It comes in a 4-pack (4 pills) and each pill controls nausea for 24 hours.  It is not unusual for cipro to decrease appetite in many dogs.  How much is he taking?

His last Cipro dose is today, thankfully, as he is really not taking pills well and they are huge.  Thanks for weighing in.  I spoke with the oncology tech today and she said they could probably do Cerenia for the next round.  Hopefully that will help.  I am tyring to get a refill on his Gabapentin before the weekend as he is going to run out, and definitely still needs it.  I tried to wean him to every 12 hours and he got symptomatic again.  The original surgeon prescribed it who is no longer following them so I asked the oncologist, really hoping to get it approved as its the only thing makes him comfortable.

Since he will only eat chicken and rice I am getting a little worried about his nutrition.  Should I try to give him any supplements?  I ordered NuPro All natural dog supplement, K9 Omega, and Nutramax Proviable DC capsules (need for my other dog right now so thought it would help him after so many antibiotics).  Does anyone do the K9 Immunity or Immunity Plus?  I don't want to interfere with chemo treatments so I wasn't sure.

Thanks!

Mary Beth

Couple of questions. Charlie needs Gabapentin for pain. How is it showing up and how often? Does it "appear" to be from the second surgery or moreso from the amputation? Or hard to tell?

I've forotten, has his appetite been off ever since the chemo, or before? There is NO reason to not be able to give him the Cerenia now if he is showing nausea symptoms.

How is his overall attitude now this far out from chemo?

I know you've been speaking with an Onco Tech and, if you had tne same kind of Onco my Happy Hannah had, it was very hard ro get pass the Tech and speak directly with the Onco! You are paying big bucks a d have Charlie's best I terest at heart moreso than anyone! You need to be heard!! Charlie's Onco needs to really understand first ha d what's going on with Charlie. He may definitely need a lower dose, or more time inbetween. And, as you are already aware, it needs to be discussed if this is the best route for Charlie.

Of course I'm not a Vet, so check with your Vet. I gave Happy Hannah K9 Immunity Plus during her chemo. My "illusion " was that the K9 Immunity seemed to give her a little energy boost. The Omega is good too. Be aware, I have read that the fish oil can ccause some tummy upset if too much at once, so spread out the capsules. A can of Sardines is good to add to his food too. For now, give him anything he will eat! Have you tried things ike cheeseburgers, steak, etc?

Don't mean to be asking so many questions! We're all.lart of Charlie's Fan Club and cheering madly for hi.! You've been through sooo much a d had such a time getting to the right Vets, we just want you to ge the best possible support from his Vet Team! You both deserve THE BEST OF THE BEST!! If this Onco doesn't fit the bill, then maybe another one will.

And just ditto Dr Pam again...seems like Cerenia woukd be a good idea now instead of waiting.

Charlie IS doing so much better than the start of this recovery a d that is great!!!

Lots and lots of love and hugs!!

If I get K9 Immunity Plus I don't really need the Omega, right?  And overall it would be easier on his tummy?  Thinking of returning the Omega and just getting the Immunity Plus.

His appetite returned yesterday for the most part, and he actually ate almost a full bowl of my other dogs' dry kibble!  I couldn't believe it.  Then he ate a cheeseburger mid-day, and a chicken with rice and cottage cheese for dinner!  He is still uncomfortable at end of Gabapentin cycle, and still has a problematic area on incision.  I did get refills of the meds and the wonderful vet at Friendship asked for pics of the incision to see what to do about that.  Something is going on there that just isn't going away. Really hoping he doesn't have to back on Cipro.  I don't know if the incision area is in addition to a nerve pain the gabapentin helps with or if it IS what is bothering him.  Just seems odd a neuropathic pain med would help an incision (possibly infectious) pain, but I don't know.  Will see what he says.  I will send pics soon, and a wonderful little video of him taking a walk yesterday!  So good to see that tail wagging. 🙂

Thank you for caring about Charlie!

Just heard back from the surgeon and he said the bruising at the incision line isn't terrible, he's not too concerned. We are touching base tomorrow about his theories regarding the nerve and a possible evaluation. At this point I don't want to put him through anything else though, I just want him comfortable. Will be interesting to see what he thinks.

On a side note, has anyone tried Atesminin treatment ? I know it's not advisable with radiation treatment but is it bad with chemo too? Thought if Charlie doesn't end up tolerating the chemo it may be an option to fight the cancer!

Correct. It can't hurt to have on hand though, as an occasional treat. Omegas are so important.

Here's a post with more. I would talk to your onco before trying, to be safe. Most will advise against concurrent treatments:
