Harley just completed two weeks of metronomic chemo (Chlorambucil).  The oncologist said bloodwork looks fine so he will continue on the Chlorambucil for another two weeks, then have bloodwork done again and get a chest xray to see if there are any changes to the lung tumors.

His bloodwork end of May said:  HCT:  41.8%, Segs:  5770 & Platelets:  206,000.  I asked what it was this week and I think she said HCT:  53 and Segs 5148.

I've never dealt with bloodwork for a dog before and should I be concerned with the Segs going down and also from numbers I see here isnt't 206,000 low for the platelets?

Harley is an 8 year old Golden Retriever. Amp surgery for an infiltrative lipoma canceled due to two masses in chest. A rescue, he found his forever home on 3/18/07 and left for his eternal home on 1/09/13. His story and medical history are at http://myharley.....pawds.com/

I wish I could help with that, but I don't know much about this area. My default way of looking at things like this is 1) ask your oncologist to find out if this is an area of concern, and if the onco vet isn't concerned, then try not to worry yourself about it either. It's good to be vigilant though, so kudos to you!

Don't worry - it's normal!! I'm a Veterinary Technician (animal nurse) - completely normal ... as long as the bloodwork remains in the normal range - it can vary from day to day

"Segs" are another term for neutrophils and the count needs to be at 2000 to continue chemo so your dog is fine.  Hct is the hematocrit or percentage of red cells and a normal count for a dog should be higher than 35%.

Thanks Heather and Pam.  I had the bloodwork done at Harley's regular vet and they sent results to the oncologist at another facility so he did not see oncologist.  I assumed it was OK since she approved another two weeks prescription, but I was concerned that numbers changed.  He sees her in two weeks so I need to make my list of questions.

Heather, I saw your post that Miller has that bruise-like mark.  Good thing you are able to have it taken care of right away.
