OfflineI'm a bit late commenting, but this was our experience with Mika, who had her aputation the same day as Henri's. The first few days, she was great (maybe it was the drug patch – ha ha!), but then she seemed depressed for two days adn we couldn't figure out why….until we realized that we had stuck her comfy cone back on her because she had started licking her IV scar. We switched to a donut-type lick prevention device and voila! Happy pup again! Maybe you can see if his cone has him down. I know that would make me bummed out.
Hope he's feeling better!

Gosh, I am so pleased I have found this forum ! Our beloved American Bulldog Hatcher was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma on Wednesday and is due to have his left foreleg amputated on Monday. In one way It will be such a relief because it's heartbreaking to see him in such pain, but I am also dreading it. He is on Metacam and Tramadol which seems to be easing his discomfort slightly and allowing him to sleep, but he's still in such pain. I am a dog groomer and have cancelled all my appointments for a week after his op, do you think this will be long enough, I obviously need to work and always pop in at lunchtime to let them out for a tinkle and check all is ok, but am now worrying that a week may not be enough. Love to Henri and all you other canine chums in the same boat xxxxxxx Debs

Thanks for joining Deborah! We're sorry to hear about Hatcher, but glad you found us. Every dog is different. Some will be back to their old self within days, others may take a few weeks. But Hatcher looks like a strong healthy boy. He may just surprise you. A week of watching him close should be more than enough. What you think may be indicators of pain, might actually just be side effects from the Tramadol. Once he's off the meds, you should notice a big difference in his behavior.
Don't miss our recent Tripawds Health videos that discuss recovery, pain medications, phantom pain and much more. And in case you missed them, be sure to review Jerry's top ten amputation concerns Q&A. Consider starting a new topic or a blog to share Hatcher's story so everyone can follow his progress.

OfflineHi Deborah
I agree, a week should be okay. He'll probably sleep most of the time anyway. Cemil's amputation was on a Monday; he came home Thursday night. I had to work Friday, was home the weekend and back to work on Monday. He was fine.
Wishing you the best–let us know how it goes, okay? How about a blog with pictures???
