My dog Finn just had his back leg amputated due to a mast cell tumor on his knee. The incision site healed up well. He had his surgery may 7th and staples taken out may 16th. Today I noticed a small red bump near where the staples were. Is this normal? I can still feel the bumps where the staples were. I’m going to call the vet Monday but I’m freaking out!

Hello and welcome, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

To be honest if it was any cancer besides mast cell I would say no worries with a few bumps.  Even with mast cell it is probably just the incision still healing but definitely get it checked by your vet for peace of mind. Once there is one MCT you have to be vigilant about any bumps you find. My Pug Maggie lost her left rear leg to a MCT in her knee.  She had recurring tumors after her amp but none were on her amp site.  You can read her story if you are interested, the links are in my signature below.

I don't mean to make you worry more but after Maggie's first MCT was removed from her side (6 months before her amp) none of our vets told us to be on the look out for more bumps.  Both Maggie and her little sis Tani had multiple MCTs over the years and neither of them passed from mast cell cancer.

Thanks for your reply, I’m hoping it’s just the incision still healing. It had some black dots which I’m pretty sure are the internal stitches healing so I’m hoping that’s what it’s from. I’m going to call the vet Monday and see what they think. There are also some little ones around it right on the staple sites, but since the tumor I’ve been freaking out about even big bites!

Of course you're  freaking out   That's  what we all do so well aroundmhere...whether it's  a hiccup or a bug bite ...we go completely  off the charts with fear!  Yeah, we get it!!

My experience  was different  from Karen's in that my Happy Hannah had osteo.  It looks a lot like just stitch/incision  bump to me.   But that's from an osteo perspective.  I think you'll feel more reassured  once you talk with your Vet.

Keep us posted .  Grab some chocolate, it's  great for the nerves!

Hugs

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle and Frankie too!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I was just wondering if you had a chance to talk with your vet about the bump?

I’ve been freaking out about even big bites!

I can't tell you how many times I got a catch in my throat when I felt a  bump on Maggie's tummy only to flip her over and see one of her tits!

Let us know what you find out.
