Woke up this morning with Sebastian and he had blood all around his surgical area. Took him to the vet and they are cleaning him up now, they said it looks like he might have had an infection.

Sebastian is handling it like a champ, so happy to ride in the car and meet new people, lol.  I have taken several pics and will post later.

My question is there anything I need to ask/know since I'm here at the vet?

Silver lining thought - this doesn't right, but I remember reading that infections after surgery led to longer prognosis? He's about 3-4 weeks post-op.

Thanks.

Hi - so sorry about Sebastian.  I'm going thru the same thing with my girl who had her amp surgery 10/17.  Although she got really, really sick and could barely move before it burst open (seroma ).  Her surgery site was 100% healed closed though so that may be why.  We are going back and forth to the vet for at least once, sometimes twice, daily bandage changes at this point and when the surgeon returns on Monday, it's possible he'll want to put in a drain.  It's gross, but it's good that it's coming out of there and not building up.  Maddie was the sickest she'd ever been in the hours before it broke open and the vets really had no idea what was going on with her.  Hopefully his will heal quickly.  Maddie's definitely was infected as she was running a fever for a few days prior to the seroma opening.

Also, hers definitely was very bloody - it was scarey as it was just shooting out her side like a squirt gun - never seen anything like it.

I would ask if they tested for MRSA , just in case.

And yes there have been studies showing dogs who had post op infections after limb sparing surgery were better able to survive osteosarcoma. I believe this is why the research into immunotherapy cancer vaccines began.

That's right, it was for limb sparing, not for full amputation. 🙁

The original surgeon did say something about immunotherapy, but I think that's reserved for dogs that do chemo, which we aren't doing with Sebastian.

Geez Sebastian!  If you enjoy carrides so much, your hoomans will be glad to accommodate WITHOUT you having to get a nasty seroma just so you can joy ride! 🙂

Glad ro hear he's handling this so well!  Hopefully they can get it under control soon!

And yes, get the MRSA culture.  While we don't see it often, we do see that around here sometimes.  So we always push for getting thst culture done.

Interesting about the infections  in. limb sparing being a "good thing".

Givethat sweet Sebastian a big smooch on his fluffy curlly mig for usheart

PS   Did Maddie get a culture test for MRSA ?   If not, have the Vet do one just to be safe.

They gave him an antibiotic (Zeniquen) and an anti-inflammatory (Carprofen).

He's resting now - I've got him confined to a small area and he's still got his appetite, so that's good.

He's got one of those compression fit undershirts on too. It became too small for me, but fits him fine, lol.

Lots of rest and relaxation for him over the next couple weeks, he won't be happy since he was just declared to be fit for unrestricted activity just this week.

Forgot to add - they said all his other vitals looked good (good heart rate, no fever). He weighed 72 lbs. Prior to surgery, he weighed 76.5 pounds, so I think he's doing well other than the infection.

Sebastian, you make me smile everytime I see a picture of your spunky, adorable self! 🙂

The fact that Sebastian is being checked out so thoroughly and is passing all his tests with flying colors is good news!  The infection is being treated properly and will eventually be history!

Since Sebastian's weight is down, he should get extra treats tonight for being so svelte!! 🙂 🙂

What a lovely, lovely pooch 💗

I am sorry to hear you're having to deal with seroma (luckily I didn't have that with my girl) but it is treatable so all will be normal again, hopefully very, very soon.

He is the cutest little boy 💕💕💕 you must be a really proud Momma ☺️

Lots of hugs and cuddles flying your way 😘😘😘🐮💫✨🌟🌹
