Hi all,

My boy Baloo is a 9 year old husky who just had his Left front limb amputated due to Osteosarcoma. The morning of his surgery the vet called and said that his cancer had mets to the lungs and there was one large mass and a fewer smaller ones that she could see. She estimated that Baloo might have a month left and I decided to go ahead with the surgery because anything was better than the pain he was currently in. The original treatment plan included chemo after the surgery, but now she recommends just keeping him comfortable.  He's now 5 days post op and after reading the some of the forums, I'm wondering if I should try Metronomics or if that's just extending his suffering? This is a question only I can answer, but I'm really at a loss and have no idea what to do. He just doesn't seem ready to go. Or maybe I'm just not ready for him to go? Any advice would be helpful.

Hi Baloo and family, welcome. I'm sorry that you're dealing with mets so soon, I know it's heartbreaking but you did the very best thing you could by getting rid of that bum leg and allowing Baloo to live out his life pain-free. I'm going to bet other than the mets he's doing pretty good, right? It's all about quality of life at this point and you're both doing great.

It's hard to know what to do as far as doing chemo when mets are present. There are no date stamps on dogs even when mets are there, nobody knows how long we have with or without them.

When we found out that we were dealing with lung mets, we opted for metronomics (click on link for info). We really think that it gave us nearly 8 more months of quality time together, until the mets got too big and made our Jerry too uncomfortable. Still, it was a great way to feel like we were doing something for him and it kept his quality of life wonderful that entire time. That was what was most important to us.

You might want to check out this article by oncologist Dr. Joanne Intile, where she discusses a situation similar to yours.

"Is the Remedy for Cancer Worth the Cure?" Another Great Article by Dr. Intile

Another thing you might want to consider is getting another opinion by an oncologist. When in doubt, a second or third opinion can help a LOT.

Huskys are a tough breed and Baloo isn't paying any attention to statistics or "prognosis"!!!! And no, it doesn't sound like Baloo is planning on going anywhere anytime soon!!!

Ditto everything Jerry said!!

Yeah, recovery can be tough for about another week or so, but you have removed his painful leg and have given him a chance at a quality free life!!! And ai guarantee you that is exactly what Baloo wants!!!

There's another tripawd hero here..SASSY..and she got seven months of quality after mets were found!!! In dog years that's close to three years!

:How is Baloo handling the recovery so far?? : Eating yet...walking fairly well...drinking..pooping...peeing...still bothered by surgery pain??

Yes, do check into Metronomics AND holistic approaches too...many links on this site. YES! There ARE things you can do! And if this vet isn't familiar with some of these things, then find a vet who is! Gain knowledge and then make decisions in your approach. And sure, sometimes not treating is a treatment....maybe...maybe not in this case.

The BEST thing you can do right now is focus on surgery recover and Be More Dog ...BE. ORE BALOO!! He is living in the moment not worrying about a thing!!! NOW is all that mstters to him...that and all the loving and spoiling you can send his way!!!! Let NOTHING rob you of your time together!!! And please take lots of pictures...we LOVE pictures around here!!! Drive thrus.....take hin through lots of drive thrus for burgers and fries....very healing!!way-cool

We are right here with you! You are not alone!!!!!

Sending lots of love and hugs!

Welcome!!! I just wanted to add to Jerry and Sally's comments that it's hard for us humans to be positive, mind-over-matter, when we're in pain. And I do believe in miracles. I'm thinking it's the same for our fur-kids. It could be that once Baloo's pain is gone, more positive energy can go to healing and addressing those mets.

Thank you all SO MUCH for your guidance and support. Jerry, I actually just talked to you on the phone the other day and bought the Climate Changer Fleece Sweater (I live in Eureka).

I am going to take the advice and call around to a few oncologists. My Vet is awesome and very caring, but I don't believe she is too familiar with cancer and treatments.

We are having a problem with Baloo's Recovery. He was doing GREAT until day 5 when he woke me up by SCREAMING in pain for about 45 seconds and then it takes him about an hour to recover and finally breathes normal again. Then he likes to go outside and lay on the cold ground "icing it" (he's so smart). It has happened twice a day and it is breaking my heart. He has been on Gabapentin, Rimadyl, and Tramadol for pain since surgery. He had his weekly check-up yesterday and I discussed this with the Vet and she didn't seem too concerned, but she did increase his Gabapentin to 3 times a day. However, last night alone he had 3 of these screaming episodes. The first one was the worst he ever had and then he had two that weren't as bad, but it is SO hard to watch him go through that and I totally broke down and cried. I can't handle this, the pain seems WAY worse than before the amputation and it's making me regret my decision.

I've read a few posts that people have had similar situations and that this is caused by nerve pain. But I haven't found out if it goes away after a while? How long does he have to suffer and go through these episodes?   I was thinking about taking him to get acupuncture to see if that helps.

Other than these screaming painful episodes, he is doing very well. He gets along GREAT. He can go up and down the stairs into our house with no problem. He jumps on the couch no problem. I've been giving him some weed oil with food, which has been helping relax him because he was getting too active with all those pain medications. He was eating and drinking well and getting lots of good snacks and treats, except he didn't eat at all yesterday, even when I got him a McDonalds sausage :(   He's been peeing and pooping normal too. There was one incident that he coughed up a drop of blood and I'm sure that's not good, but I know the cancer is in the lungs so it's to be expected.

Please help. At this point I'm almost thinking that putting him down is what I have to do. I can't handle seeing him going through this pain.

OKAY....HANG IN THERE....DEEP, DEEP, BREATHS!!!! Seriously...right now....deep breathe in....exhale slowly......B R E A T H E.....B R E A T H E!

Now grab a handfull of choclate and inhale!!! Some here grab wine I instead!!!

Considering that overall his recovery is going very well...maybe even ahead of the curve a bit.....this sounds very much like it is phantom pain

Trynto put things into "compartments". He is having these bouts of pain that comes and goes fairly quickly...the rest of the time he is getting along well...especially so early j n recovery! This IS very early!

Actualky, he sould just be resting and going out to potty..not jumping and even avoiding stairs if possible! Sounds like Baloo is a pretty determined fella'!

You may try massage too. Are there any areas where he tenses up if you n pet him...spine, neck, pelvic area, etc?

Do you have an Oncologist you can consult? Perhaps they coukd adjust lain meds a bit better. Generally...not always...Gabapentin does help with nerve lain..HOWEVER, I don't think it's instantaneous though.

STAY CONNECTED...WE ARE HERE....especially during this stressful recovery time! Right now it feels like you've done this TO Baloo...we all felt that way at first....then you realize you did this FOR Baloo!!! His sparkle seems to be coming back a little bit already...it's there!!

Have you researched the phantom pain management links here yet? Baloo is already seeking out the cold spots to help heal the surgery site...smart boy indeed!!!!

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Hugs)))))))))))))))))))))))))

PS...Heck, that little spot of blood cou ld even be just because his throat was a little raw from the tube down his throat during surgery!

I know, I'm freaking out. I think I'm calming down now. Thank you, Benny55, I needed that. I need to remember to look at the positives... and his IS doing extremely well. I think he is doing too much too fast, but I'm working on limiting him more.

During these episodes, I notice that the area of his surgery bulges and appears to tighten up. Does anybody know if putting pressure or ice or heat while it’s happening helps? Or just let it run its course? I’ve called my Vet to ask, but I’m waiting for her to call me back.

I did read an article from here about phantom limb pain, but Baloo doesn't look or lick at the missing leg or anything like that. Actually, he sits with his head turned completely away from the amputated side of his body. I comfort him, ice the surgery spot and give him light massages (not directly on the surgery site, but his neck and back mostly). I just don't know if any of that is helpful.

Thanks again, reading all of your posts is helping me.

OH THAT BALOO! I love that picture of him on Samoa beach! Sorry he's having the pains.

Annette, breathe. Here is an an article about pain management that will have some good tips for you.

http://tripawds.....care-tips/

Give Dr. Sarah Green a call, ASAP  she is an awesome pain management expert in your area and will be familiar with Dr. Petty's recommendations..

We are actually having Dr. Petty the pain expert on Tripawd Talk Radio this weekend, feel free to call in or post your questions, check out this post:

http://tripawds.....5-300-pst/

Deal with the nerve pain first, then decide on what chemo, if at all. When we had to decide on Jerry's treatment we opted out on chemo because there weren't any oncologists or vets qualified to do it, in Humboldt. Pretty sure it's still like that there. The closest facilities we felt comfortable with were in Rohnert Park or UC Davis (which is where Jerry had his surgery). As you know, they are far away though.

Hang in there, things DO get better. And you have our phone # so please call if you need anything OK? I'm around all week, leave a message if I miss your call.

I don't have anything new to add, besides my support.  My little pug Maggie didn't have phantom pain but she was an absolute slug for 6 weeks after her amp and I regretted my decision most everyday!  But she came around and hopped happily through life for almost 4 years. She had mast cell cancer with lymph node involvement, her prognosis was 6 to 9 months.

Also, I lived in Arcata for a little over 6 years back in the early 80's.  A beautiful place to live but not much of a way to make a living back then (legally anyway winker).  I now live in the San Francisco Bay Area, but I remember by time up there quite fondly.

Sounds like overall Baloo is doing well, maybe a bit too much activity.  I was going to suggest icing and massage but you are doing that.  Some members report that just lightly cupping their hands on the amp site brought some relief.

Tri-pug Maggie survived a 4.5 year mast cell cancer battle only to be lost to oral melanoma.

Hello, Annette & Baloo,

I've been reading here about Baloo's left front limb amp d/t osteosaracoma and his intermittent pain in early recovery from the surgery. I haven't seen your posts since Jan. 21st, so I'm wondering how he's doing these days?

We live nearby you in Eureka. Six weeks ago we adopted a 6-yr.-old female tripawd pitbull named Phoenix. Back in September, she was hit by 3 cars down near the Golden Gate Bridge and good samaritans transported her north to Humboldt Co. As a result of the accident, Phoenix needed to have her mangled front right leg amputated.

Although our tripawd is not dealing with cancer, you have my support.

Almost 10 years ago we lost a dog from CA, but we were able to keep her comfortable and to help her enjoy life for quite a while after the vets gave us the Dx.

I also relate to those helpless, gut-wrenching feelings your were having when Baloo yelped in pain. Seven years ago--two years after we adopted our beagle--she needed morphine injections/patches & then surgery for what turned out to be a ruptured disc. They didn't know if she would live, and it tooks months for her to heal. She's now almost 12.

I realize you're doing the best you can for your dog, and I admire that. Try to stay positive, and to not project too far into the future. I'm not sure how to be helpful, but since we live in the same town, perhaps, if it feels right, our two dawgs can meet and hop around together. My email is: 51frontier@suddenlink.net.

Thank you so much Neil and everybody else. The support is really what need. I've never had to go through anything like this and seeing Baloo in so much pain was the worst feeling.

I've had a pretty busy week at work, but I am glad to say that Baloo only had one more of those painful episodes on the 22nd and it only lasted a couple seconds. Along with increasing the Gabapentin, my vet prescribed 2mg of alprazolam at night to relax and sedate him, which helped tremendously. I think one of his problems was that he just wasn't sleeping well and relaxing, despite all the pain meds he was getting. But he Is doing MUCH better now and doesn't look uncomfortable or like he's in any pain anymore.  I just hope he recovers enough from the surgery to have a few more happy weeks before his cancer takes him.

We go to the vet today to get checked out and get his staples removed and I will keep posting updates on Baloo.

Thank you all!

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR STITCHES OUT!!!! He will be glad to be rid of those things! Maybe you can take him thru a drive-thru for a burger to celebrate!!

And he will continue to get better!!! This IS major surgery and recocery js no picnic! But it looks like now he is well on the road to recovery and his sparkle will continue to come back! Baloo has no intention of going anywhere anytime soon! Remember, no time frame stamped on Baloo's butt!!!

Lots of loving and spoiling, lots of treats, lots of staying in the present and being more dog!!! That makes Baloo so happy!!!

Sending love and hugs!

Annette that is a GREAT update! YAY! Thank you so much, I've been wondering about you and Baloo. How did the vet visit go?

Again, we say it here a lot, but there are no date stamps, with or without cancer and lung mets and all that. Lots of dogs live far longer than anyone thinks even when lung mets are present, so just take things day by day and before you know it, a ton of time will have passed and you will be AMAZED!

Give that boy a smooch from us. Hugs to you too!
