I apologize in advance if this has been addressed before in the forums.  I've been searching through the treatment section and some of the articles on artemisinin , along with many online google searches.  But I'm a bit confused.

From what I have read, I think I want to put Brendol on Artemisinin , but she just started chemo.  Had her first treatment this past Monday (and no side effects so far, so I think we are good with this one).  Is Artemisinin something that should be saved for when she is no longer on chemo?  Or do we do it in conjunction?  That's what's got me confused.

Additionally, I was looking into Milk Thistle.  I have the same question there.  I can't tell if that is something that is safe while she is on the chemotherapy.  On the bright side, my research indicated that Milk Thistle is something that I should probably be taking for my liver disease... learn something new everyday!  Anyway, one of the articles that I read (http://www.vete.....ancer.aspx) said that "The risk of herb-drug interactions appears to be low, but not non-existent. Milk thistle may inhibit certain isoforms of the cytochrome P450 family, namely CYP3A4 and CYP2C9. This becomes significant when combined with agents that depend on CYP3A4 for metabolism, raising concerns about adding milk thistle for “liver protection” during chemotherapy, especially at high doses."

I have changed both my girls' diets to Orijin 6 Fish and they are doing really well on that (other than it give them some potent poo!).  They are both on Glucosamine for joint support... my other girl has a Patella Luxation.  And I just purchased K9 Immunity Plus to supplement their diets.

Am I missing anything?

Thanks for any feedback you think could help.aw-shucks

Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury.  Her amp was on 10/1/12.  She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera.  We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.

Hi - I don't know anything about milk thistle, but for your question on the arte, I was told in an email by one of the main Dr's researching arte that it should not be given at the same time as chemo. This was about 18 mo to 2 years ago, so *maybe* things have changed, but at the time, he told me arte had not been tested/researched in conjunction with chemo so the 2 should not be used together.

We waited until Abby was done with her chemo before starting her on the artemisinin .

Hope that helps,
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Tripawds blog, and a more detailed blog here. Please also check out my novel, What the Dog Ate. Now also in paperback! Purchase it at Amazon via Tripawds and help support Tripawds!

I've been searching through the treatment section...

Did you search the blogs or check the Artemisinin links in the Tripawds Nutrition blog? There are a lot of topics here discussing artemisinin in the forums, but we know at least a few Tripawds bloggers have written about it too.

I also waited to give Tazzie the artemisinin until she had finished her chemo injections based on advice from her oncologist. Tazzie had a liver issue so she took milk thistle plus SAM-E (product name is denamarin ) and that was okay to take with chemo and may prevent liver issues from chemo especially if your dog is taking drugs such as CCNU.

Pam, do you know of a dosage chart for SAM-E that we can consult? Some folks are wondering how much to give a dog. Thanks!

The dose for SAM-E is as follows:

cats and small dogs (under 12 pounds)  100 mg daily

medium dogs (12-35 pounds)  200 mg daily

large dogs (35-65 pounds)  400 mg daily

XL dogs (65-120 pounds)  800 mg daily

giants (120 plus pounds)  1200 mg daily

SAM-E is best given on an empty stomach although there is a chewable version of denamarin (which also contains milk thistle).  If you are going to use a human product I recommend Nature Made.
