Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Violet is a very sweet looking girl. smileyI'm betting she'll be hopping around with her toys in no time. Missy also had a rear left hind leg amputation. She walked with her new harness on yesterday to the mailbox ones back 8 days post op.

Thanks everybody! She is a very loving girl.

I got a call from the vet about 2 and a half hours ago from the vet. Violet is out of surgery and it went VERY well! At the time she was still sleeping and being closely watched.

I just had another call from our surgeon about 15 minutes ago telling me that Violet is awake and doing much better than most pets they have seen go through this. He has already decreased the drip of the narcotics they are using for the pain management , and Violet hasn't made a peep! She is responding to her name, but prefers to face away from the staff who are monitoring her 🙂 Sounds like her, hahaha! They are continuing to watch her vitals too, and so far everything has been right where it should be. They will be monitoring her overnight and if anything happens they will call us right away. We are likely going to be able to pick her up tomorrow afternoon! Tomorrow morning they will start to work on getting her moving and getting her balanced on three legs. VERY encouraging news for these pawrents over here! We expect another call from our doctor later this evening.

We will miss her tonight, but know that keeping her at the vet will be the best decision to make sure everything is as it needs to be so soon after the operation. I'm sure I'll have questions spring up when we bring her home and continue recovery, but for now I just feel relieved!

Oh that is very good news!!! I just read your blog and boy ... what a love and life Violet has!!! She is so lucky with you!!! I love all the dogs on this forum (and kitties too) but Violet looks so much like little Jasper lily ... I can't help but fall even more in love with her.

I know you are anxious to get her home but trust me - you will appreciate the rest tonight!!! Shelby was 2 nights at the doggy hospital and I got some rest because there is sometimes a slight crash from the meds when they come home! Keep us posted!!! Happy News!!!

Good news- she is through surgery and recovering well!

You sound like you are prepared to bring your girl home tomorrow.  Try and rest tonight and remember to rest when she does once she is home.

Hi everybody!

Violet is doing spectacularly well! Everybody is amazed at how well she's doing, in fact! Our doc called us last night with an update and she had already been able to go outside and was hopping around with no problems! She even ate some meatballs of food that were offered to her 🙂

This morning she ate again and went outside some more. Our doc said she probably didn't even need to use the sling to help, but she recommended that we keep using it for awhile just in case of a fall. She still has not had a bowel movement (probably because she hadn't eaten for over 24 hrs!) and is having trouble learning how to assume the position to pee, but that will all come in time. They feel more than confident about how she is doing and we will be picking her up at 4:00 this afternoon. I am SO excited to get her back here in her regular environment so we can start adjusting together 🙂

GRRRREAT NEWS!!!! Homecoming is good for everybody!!

Sounds like Miss Violet is doing splendidly well! 🙂 🙂

Yeah, she'll work out all her mobility issues as she adjusts to her new normal. And the drugs also will .aybe delay poop for several days. As long as she pees, no worries about the delayed poop. It'll happen!

Tha ks for the update! YAAAAAAAAAY FOR VIOLET!!! 🙂

Feeling stressed already! Since Violet is such a "velcro dog" she keeps trying to get up and follow me whenever I move at all. Doc recommended having her just lay on her bed and relax tonight, and that has been really hard so far with her great desire to move.

Doc also asked us to keep the E Collar on tonight, but she's really struggling to move around in it. She hates it 🙁 I'm nervous about taking her outside to go potty again because it's harder than I thought to help her walk with that darn cone and I really don't want to hurt her. We have to go out just once more time before bed.

Fortunately she doesn't seem to have any pain, and we have started the Clavamox and Gabapentin. We will add the Rimadyl in the morning.

Sigh. I know she can sense my stress and nerves so I'm really trying to calm down. Any advice or reassurance would be much appreciated.

If you are taking her outside and right with her, you can take the cone off while she goes potty.

Fortunately my Happy Hannah was one of those who never needed the cone. I k ow it would have freaked her out. But I was with her 24/7 those first several days and watched her like a hawk.

Did the Vet give you Tramadol also? Thst works well in conjunction with Gabapentin.

Violet may be more "restless" as opposed to "velcro" right now. My Happy Hannah was restless and just didn't seem to be avle ro sit still or lay down for more than a couple of minutes at a time. May have been some pain, maybe the pain meds, maybe both.

It gets better! But it may take a few more days at least before you will believe it, but it does!! Grab the CHOCOLATE and hang on! 🙂

Thank you, Sally!

I was able to calm down and sleep just a little (I woke up every time Violet moved, which was a lot!) and everything is going great. I took the E collar off because it was bothering her so much, and she has only tried to lick the area twice. I shut her down immediately on that 🙂

She woke me up to go potty outside at 3am, and we have gone pee twice more this morning. Still waiting on the poop--doc said she seems to want to do it but can't figure out how to do it with her new posture. I'm going to keep trying throughout the day.

She's eating and drinking like normal and taking her pills like a champ. She even barked and growled at some noises in the house today, which is just like she normally does.

I'm hoping tonight will bring more rest and sleep for us all!

Thanks for the reassurance 🙂
