Youve gotten a lot of good insight from Maggies's mom.

The "two week staple removal mark" is NOT " magic" for every dog. For the first three weeks I wandered what I had done TO my Happy Hannah! I was sooooo upset because the ".magic" had not happened yet. Like you, I would see glimpses of her sparkle coming back and then...POOF...it would disappear as quickly as it came!! I even delayed her scheduled chemo until three weeks as I felt she wasn't feeling good enough. So don't worry about delaying it if you need to.

After about three weeks (plus:, I was so glad I had done this FOR my dog!!

Every dog's recovery is different and at their own individual pace! PUG MAGGIE took six weeks before she decided to get all her sparkle back!

For your reassurance, I would have the vet check her incision and take her temperature. Also, often times a dose of IV fluids seem to help their overall attitude even if they don't appear dehydrated. But the fact that she's eating and even messing with her bone, all good signs that recovery IS taking place.

It does appear she is still having bouts of pain in between doses. Is she on anything other than Gabapentin? Anhway, let your vet know about the intermittent bouts of pain.

Oh, and my Happy Hannah didn't lay in her amp. side for five weeks!!

Let us know what the vet says. Don't forget the DEEP BREATHS and the CHOCOLATE!!!

Love and hugs!

Sally and Alumni Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle too!

PS...AMY...thanks for mentioning my beloved Hapoy Hannah's photo....very kind of you. And yeah, I need to add ice cream to my water too so I'll drink moreway-cool

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

Hang in there, things do get better. It's still early and as others have said, when the staples/stitches come out it's a huge milestone. We also had a big ol seroma at about 10-12 days out but no big deal, just got it drained and that was that.

Also want to add to Maggie's mom's comment:

I also had to remind myself that before any of this surgery business, Maggie was often up a lot at night and slept soundly during the day while we were at work -- only my hypersensitivity to her every action had changed. Because I have been sleeping downstairs with her, I noticed every time she got up and walked around the room at night (which I normally would not have known). I was worried all night that she wasn't sleeping well, and then worried all day that she "just laid there" and didn't want to do anything. Well, it turns out she was just being her normal dog self.

That is SPOT ON. We become soooo super hyper aware of every little thing. Things that our dogs always did we suddenly notice and worry about. It's really hard but there's a fine line to walk between being a good, observant advocate and knowing how to Be More Dog . Stay conscious of your hyper-sensitivity to everything and you will get there too.

thanks all for the reassurance!  The surgeon ultimately advised that we didn't need to bring her in on Tuesday for the seroma since she'll be in tomorrow for the staple removal and first oncologic appointment.  Since then, there has definitely been some fluid build up (now I know what to look for!) but no more "bursting".  I have been using the warm compress for as long as she will tolerate it and that seems to help.  She had a fantastic day yesterday - when I came home from work, she actually rolled over for belly rubs like she used to and gave me KISSES!!!!!!!  unfortunately, her night did not go so well as the heavy breathing/panting started again around 10:00 and went through the night.  I got up and slept on the floor with her at 3:00 and sometime after that, she settled down.  She was sleeping and breathing fine when we woke up at 7:30 and daddy reports she's doing fine today although she didn't want to get up until later in the morning. (I didn't either after the night we had!)  It doesn't seem like its a drug issue in that she's only on the Gabapentin (300 mg) once every 12 hours and she has no problems between 7:30 am and her next dose at 7:30 pm.  It's almost like night terrors or something!  She's dreaming a lot when she does fall asleep as I see (and felt last night)moving and twitching which in turn wakes her up again!   Or maybe, it' just the seroma bothering her cause when I tried to gently touch it last night, she was NOT happy!  anyhow, getting the staples out tomorrow will be a good milestone and I just hope that she will not have a hard time with the chemo...Fingers crossed that the surgeon will have only good news tomorrow after checking her out!

Yayay Amira! Glad to read that you are doing so much better! Murphy had quite the seroma issues, that lasted for almost about a month after surgery, including after the stitches were removed. Different parts of his incision would suddenly start leaking. There was really no rhyme or reason to it. I took him into the vet for it once, where they drained it, but it came back! The vet advised that it would be unnecessary to bring him in each time to drain it.The vet did prescribe antibiotics, because the seroma fluid cause easily cause infection. It has only been within the last two weeks that it FINALLY stopped. (He had his surgery on August 17th).

When the seroma would start to leak, Murphy would often jump or startle, it would wake him from his sleep and he would shoot across the room. He really hated the fluid and feeling it leak freaked him out. The vet guessed that it would do with his instinct to keep himself clean. I sincerly hope Amira's seroma goes away fast, they say that after the stitches/staples are removed they tend to go away.

Best of luck!

Murphy, became a tripawd on August 17, 2015. Went to the rainbow bridge on July 5, 2016.

..I'm almost afraid to jinx Amira by even saying this (since they last few times I did, the very next day she would regress) but Amira is now doing pretty well!  She definitely seemed better after the staples were removed 17 days post op and almost immediately, seemed to be more like her old self.  She had her first dose of CCNU (Lomustine) the same evening and unfortunately, within 36 hours took a turn for the worse...

Amira did not do well with the chemo and it was a terrible week+ for her (and me especially since Daddy had to be out of the country during that time).  Amira went back to not eating anything other than hand fed chicken breast, not drinking, panting excessively at night, seeming very lethargic and downright miserable. There were moments/days that she seemed better but then she would regress.  The worst days for her were days 6-7 post chemo.   It was so bad for her that I was having serious doubts about putting her through such suffering.

Thankfully on day 9 post chemo, she seemed to be better which coincided with a few things:  I stopped giving her any meds including the Gabapentin (vet said we could ramp down); it was just shy of 4 weeks post amputation and Daddy came home.  She's been doing well since then and seems to have gotten her sparkle back thank God!   I know that she will likely go through a rough patch again after her next CCNU treatment on 10/30 but I think she has pretty much physically recovered from the amputation so at least she won't have the 'double whammy' to deal with next time.  Wish us luck! laughing

And WHEW times a thousand!!!

Soooo glad Amira is getting her sparkle back! I know her recovery has been rougher than some a d that's so hard on humans!
My Happy Hannah had Carboplatin (osteosarcoma). I knkw with that particular chemo so etimes an Onco will reduce the dose...or even spread the dose out further...if there is a bad reaction. Of course, your Onco can discuss is that's an option. I'm no vet.

It is WO DERFUL that she has bounced back and is feeling so much better! That has us all smiling in tripawd land!clap

We would love to see pictures...HINT!!!

Lots of hugs to all!

So glad to hear Amira is getting better!  Love love love hearing good updates. You never know she may just breeze right through the rest of her chemo and surprise you!  We noticed Max was quite lethargic the first few days after his first chemo but after his second one he was totally fine. Never missed a beat. So glad to hear her sparkle came back with the added benefit of having Daddy home too.
