its been 5 weeks since Tulla's front leg amputation, she was on Gampapenten but the vet felt she no longer needed it. Every once in awhile she is sleeping and wakes up with a screech and jumps up. What should I do? Thanks.

Hi Tulla and Bailey, welcome.

What was the reason for the amputation? How old is Tulla? Tell us a little more, we love learning about our new members!

What you are describing sounds like phantom pain . If you click on the link you can read all about it. This is something that happens to some animals and humans too, when they lose a limb. The brain and body haven't connected yet and when the brain sends a message to move the missing leg, the body responds with "WHAT?!" 😉

But no worries, it's easily managed with additional Gabapentin, gentle massage and if necessary, dry needling acupuncture. Here are two links that can help you learn more about each:

Talk to your vet about additional courses of Gabapentin and a referral to a canine rehab therapist if there's one in your area. The Tripawds Foundation may even pay for your first rehab visit !

We had the same yelping for 6(!) months and I didn't get Gabapentin. I recently read that it's pretty safe to use for a longer time, too. So you may want to put her back on that.

Allt the best

I was just going to post this same topic! Lola had her surgery on March 20th. She does the same thing. Yelps, then suddenly runs into the other room. That's how it started, but now she typically doesn't add the 'yelp' part. I've noticed that sometimes she will look back at the cushion or wherever she had been lying. Makes me wonder if she thinks something bit her. She will do it when she's standing too. This started happening about three weeks after surgery. For a few days she was put on Tramadol by the surgeon and that did not help. A few days later at her vet checkup, her oncologist put her on Gabapentin and it has really slowed the number of these episodes down. I wasn't fishing for the term 'phantom pain ' when I brought it up and she didn't mention it. So, when I did ask her if that could be the issue she said that there's no way to ask Lola what she's experiencing and I was glad she didn't commit to that terminology. However, I certainly think that could be what's going on and am glad the med is helping.

Additionally, I read the link about Gabapentin. It says not to use the human form of gab bc it contains Xylitol. But I believe that is referring to the liquid form only. Is that right? Lola takes capsules for humans.

Thanks for checking it out. Well I can't be 100% certain on that, so it's best to double check with the vet. We do have a pharmacist in the Tripawds nation, I'll drop her a line right now. If it hasn't harmed Lola the form you are taking is probably just fine.

I just called my pharmacist and he said that the Gab capsules that I have contain Mannitol instead of Xylitol. It is also a sweetener which is so unnecessary for a capsule. I'm not sure what this all means for Lola as described in this link about it.  Mannitol

I'm concerned bc dalmatians can be prone to kidney/bladder stones. If anyone wants to discuss with your pharmacist, they will want to know the dosage and manufacturer. Mine simply said a special compounding pharmacist would have to formulate the gab without the added ingredients. I bet that's expensive!

Here's what our pharmacist friend says about Gabapentin in the capsule form. There is no Xylitol in it.

Each capsule contains 100 mg, 300 mg, or 400 mg of gabapentin and the following inactive ingredients: lactose, cornstarch, talc, gelatin, titanium dioxide, FD&C Blue No. 2, yellow iron oxide (300 mg and 400 mg only), and red iron oxide (400 mg only)
