Tally (12 yr old Australian Shep) had hind leg amputated last Wed due to mast cell tumor. She came home Friday and everything has been a piece of cake. No sign of pain, no licking the stitches, and moving around like nothing has happened. Today she started acting more anxious, panting and pacing. And by this evening she was shaking and hiding her head in our laps. We're guessing it's pain related as her surgery site looks really good, dry, no swelling or redness and even the bruising is gone. She hasn't shown any common signs of phantom pain . She is on 250mg of acetaminophen and 100mg of Gabepentin. Her Fentanyl patch was taken off today but I imagine it had run it's course anyhow after 5 days. She did have an episode last night of trying to jump at a dog on tv and fell and it was quite painful for a few minutes, but she acted fine all day today. And she lets me touch her surgery side without complaint. We called the vet hospital and they advised to give her Tramadol  and call them back with results tonight. Has anyone had trouble with pain a few days into recovery?

Welcome Tally and pack, your future posts will not have to wait for approval.

Sorry you are dealing with mast cell, my pug lost her left rear leg to a MCT.

Sounds like pain to me, Mag was on Tramadol, an anti inflam, and an antibiotic after surgery. She took tram for almost two weeks. My quad pug Obie had knee surgery last year, and I could sure tell when the fentanyl patch was wearing off. We removed the patch on day 5 post surgery- so maybe Tally needs a bump in meds now.

She looks like a beautiful girl!

I've read Maggie's story over and over. Just know that she has brought many of us "newbies" hope and comfort. Thank you for sharing her with us.  I think I panicked a little tonight. After I posted, I tried to calm down and sort through posts for similar topics and it seems logical that we just need to adjust her pain meds. Tally just finished chemo for lymphoma in May and did so well and everything seemed so straight forward with that type of cancer, this new situation is kind of throwing us for a loop. This was suppose to be our grace period!

TALLY!!!! You are a very beautiful pup! Love your avatar picture and look foward to more!

You'll be feeling better as soon as you get some more pain meds in you. My Happy Hannah was on Tramadol AND Gabapentin, as well as Rimadyl.. I had to adjust her pain meds and the times In between doseages a few times

GEEZ, you and Tally have been through a lot recently! Two kinds of that nasty piece of crap disease?? You've earned the right to panic! We all do that very well here! We uderstand! You've been on such an emotional roller coaster, it's a wonder you're not completely.whacko!!

Yes Pug Maggie and her Mom are quite an inspiration to us all. And there is NO reason Tally can't make her own rules and live many, any happy years as Pug Maggie did!

Remember, you are not alone and we understand this journey far better than others can. And we also understand the love you and Tally have for each other and that's very helpful in the healing process. The spoiling and loving wil l be even more than you ever thought possible!

Remember, Tally's not worried about a thing! She's living in the now...in the present and that's where she wants you to be...right by her side enjoying her happiness and she yours.

You are a strong team! Give yourself a hug for staying the course! And eat lots of chocolate...it helps.....and take deep breaths...that helps too, but not as much as the chocolate!

Hugs!

Ohhh how is she doing today? Is the tramadol helping?

Welcome, welcome. I'm sorry you're dealing with another cancer, but we'll be here to help however we can. As you read, Karen has a LOT of experience with mast cell cancer as do lots of folks here, so stick around and lean on us. Have you had a chance to check out Jerry's Required Reading List yet? Lots of good stuff there. Gotta run, back later to check and see how you're both doing!

I'm pretty sure it's the drugs! My girl, Shelby, was great the first few days and then BOOM, panting, pacing, etc. She was on tramadol and a fetnyl patch and it made her bat crazy! I had to shut my bedroom door just to get some rest (she was safe just pacing). We eased up on her meds and got her some trazadone (doggy valium) and she got better.

So it DOES get better!!! Hang in there!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

My boy Domino did the same thing, he was great for several days and then started crying out randomly as if he was in pain. He was on Metacam at the time, we had already stopped his Tramadol. Instead of restarting his Tramadol I kept him quieter, being an Aussie all he wanted to do was play, and I took him back to the vet for a couple more rounds of laser therapy and that seemed to do the trick. Hopefully Tally is feeling better this morning!

Tramadol made me shake and pant too. Day 4 or 5 is often much harder than day 1 as the fentanyl patch has worn off.The vets played with my dosage a lot to find the right combo. Oh, and many pups feel too good on day 3 or 4 and have muscle soreness the following Day.

Thank you for your responses! It's so wonderful to hear from others with experience and it's a little less scary knowing you're not alone. So Tally was prescribed a new Fentanyl patch yesterday afternoon in addition to her Gabepentin and Acetaminophen. No more Tramadol for now. It didn't seem to do much that night and I was surprised because it helped her out a lot before her surgery with the tumor pain.  She slept hard the entire night last night (first night we all got decent sleep!), I thought for sure she'd be groggy all day. But she had a great day today. Definitely slightly loopy at times, but for the most part normal, active Tally. Tonight she's a little anxious and panting but if I cuddle her and give her slow massage she settles down. I'm not complaining. She has never been a cuddler so we're taking full advantage of this. Hoping the patch gets her through roughest part.

Oh good, sounds like she is doing better.

Please forgive me for forgetting you posted on Maggie's blog. I just finished working my second job, the local Summer Shakespeare Festival, and I've been pretty sleep deprived since the first week of June.

Mag would freak on Tramadol, but quad pug Obie has been on it twice and showed no adverse effects. I've been through an amputation and a knee surgery in two different pugs. Mag recovered physically from her amp and was off tram at the end of two weeks. Obie had a very invasive knee surgery and was on crate rest for 8 weeks and on tram for 4 or 5 weeks.

You are about a week in from surgery, right? If the patch gets you through 4 or 5 days I bet you will be past the worst.

Glad you got at least one good night's sleep! And paws crossed for another one tonight!

I just love Tally's avatar picture! Post more when you can.

Keep o n with the cuddles! I think she's starting to like them!

Definitely sounds like the meds making Tally pant and get upset.

I love that Tally is now a cuddler! My Polly started being snuggly after her amputation to the point of obnoxiousness. She never wanted anything to do with snuggling before. Maybe they realize how short life is now!
