Please, please, have them culture the wound!!!! I know I am a broken record, but this looks eerily familiar. Mention MRSA . TY did not stink, but he had it. Same rotting flesh, same eating away at wound. Makes me wonder.........  The same vet that did Ty's amp. Did the wound debridement and treatments. Charged me big time too. I just skimmed through the posts because my heart was in my throat after seeing his wound. Does he have a fever? Like I said, it may have been mentioned, but in my rush to post this, I did not read thoroughly. So glad he is getting the care he needs. Lori, Ty and Gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

So much to update!  First, and most important,  Buddy is home and doing well.  His surgery went great.  He has a compression bandage on but the vet showed me pictures.  It is stitched up right this time.  I can't believe the difference in this incision site and the last one.   He came home with the bandage, a cone, 2 antibiotics, an anti-inflammatory pain med, and Tramadol for pain.  Best of all, he came home with instructions!

The vet took photos throughout the surgery and documented all the negligence for me.  This is the part that makes me so angry I feel sick.  When the shelter vet left me that hateful voicemail, his main complaint was the cost and difficulty of suturing.   When the good vet opened Buddy up, he was shocked to find there was not one single suture inside him.  I'm sure you all know this but there should be three layers of sutures, one through the muscle tissue,  one trough the subcutaneous layer, and one through the skin.  That horrible vet just lopped his leg off and then sewed his skin back together.  I guess since stitches are so expensive and such a pain to do, he just skipped them.

So under the skin, Buddy just had a big empty pocket that was filling up with fluid and bacteria.   The area that concerned me and looked bad on Tuesday (the first pic I posted) really wasn't even the infection.   It was an area of dermatitis caused by the fluid leaking out and sitting on his skin.  The redness and pus that I saw were just irritation on the outside of his skin.  Don't get me wrong, it was caused by the infection festering inside him and leaking out a bit , but that part wasn't deep and was only on the outside.

I gave him Benedryl that night because I could tell it was itching him.  The Benedryl dried it up a little and reduced the swelling and redness.  That's why he looked better the next morning.  The part that I could see responded to the Benedryl, but the real problem was inside.  Over the course of the day, the infection inside him took over.

And now horribly maddening item number 2...one of the well-meaning volunteers posted something about Buddy's ordeal on a Facebook page that is private to the shelter volunteers and staff.  This is a bit confusing but I have been dealing with 3 different groups, the actual shelter staff, a group that volunteers directly for the shelter, and another rescues type group that raises funds for shelter animals (at several different shelters) that need some type of special care.  That Facebook page is accessible to all of them.

The shelter director (who I work with because I work for the city too) started blowing up my phone very impatiently.   When I called him back, he said he had read all the comments on FB and he needed me to explain what was going on.  I knew nothing about the FB stuff at that point.   I briefly explained and answered his questions until I noticed that all of his questions were aimed at blaming me.  He made passive aggressive remarks about how there is another lady who can foster him because I apparently don't have time to properly take care of him.  He said that I must not have realized what I was getting into.  Ya think?  How would I have known when I could never get ahold of anyone and wasn't given any information about the surgery other than the vet telling me how much he didn't want to do it.

The shelter director was angry that he'd called the good vet and they wouldn't give him anything but vague information.   He said that he needed me to get him Buddy's medical records.  He said I should have called him and taken him to the shelter vet rather than the emergency vet because they've "had problems" with that vet before.  It was late at night.  The shelter is only open for 4 hours a day.  The phones are transferred to the PD after hours.   There was no way to get a hold of him.  He asked me why I would tell the vet that they didn't give Buddy antibiotics when that was a lie.  He said they would never do a surgery like that and send a dog home without antibiotics. He said he knew for sure they had because he'd looked in the chart and saw they gave him Rimadyl.  Yes, that's right...he said Rimadyl which I'm sure all you experienced Tripawd mommies know is an anti inflamatory, not an antibiotic.  I decided not to give him any more info.

A few hours later I got a call from a lady at the rescue group telling me she had found Buddy a new foster mother who has more time for him and can give him the care he obviously needs.  I was furious.   I have never spoken to this woman or anyone from that group, despite sending them messages on FB and leaving messages with shelter staff for someone to contact me.  Again there were more passive aggressive comments about this being my fault.  That group is the one who "tagged" Buddy for foster care and who I was fostering through yet they had zero contact with me until today.

I let her have it.  How dare she imply that this is my fault?  I had been trying to contact them because I wanted to see about taking Buddy to a real vet.  I told her that I have plenty of time for him and have taken good care of him.  The only 2 issues I've had with time were hos surgery day because the vet was completely inflexible and waited until the last minute to schedule, and Wednesday afternoon when I had mandatory training all day.  I told her he was not going to a new foster.

Later a friend called me to tell me he had heard how I'm having such a hard time with Buddy because of my schedule and me not having enough time to give him the care he needs.  It was then that I found out about the FB post.  He's in the group.  All three groups are blaming me.  They are saying that I didn't go to his scheduled follow-up.  They say that the surgery he just had was just them flushing the wound out because I had not given him the proper care or his antibiotics.  The volunteer group and the rescue group both claim that they haven't been able to get ahold of me when they were trying to check up on him and see if I needed help.

They all realize they screwed up and there could be serious consequences so they are all trying to cover their butts by throwing me under the bus.  Too bad I have documented everything.  I have every voicemail and message exchanged.  I have photos.  I have phone records.  I have the unlabled envelope with vague instructions that the pills came in.  I have expertly documented surgery records provided by the good vet.

I am in law enforcement.  I write reports, collect evidence, and make cases for a living.  My only hesitation in suing that vet was that it may harm the shelter as well.  That hesitation is gone.  I have contacted an attorney.   As the good vet told me, this will likely have very serious consequences for the vet and the shelter.  Bring it on.  Oh, and BTW, the rescue and the shelter both said that the surgery was so expensive because of where I took him (after I neglected him) and I'm on my own for the nearly $1500 bill.  I figured as much.  But I'm afraid they are going to demand I give him back.  I want to keep him and I'm really afraid of what would happen to him if he went back.  Wouldn't it be alot easier for them of he just wasn't around anymore for any outside vet to examine?  They've been accused of euthanizing animals to cover their mistakes in the past.  They've also been accused of doing it out of spite.

Thanks for reading this far if you have.   Sorry it's so long.  Honestly part of the reason was because I needed to document everything anyway.  If anyone knows of a good animal rights lawyer or a group that might get behind me and get something done, please let me know.  The money is the least of my concerns at this point.  I want someone held accountable for this.

I'm watching Buddy like a hawk now that I know what to look for so please be prepared for me to ask lots more questions.  BTW, I did NOT get the culture done.  We went with 2 broad spectrum antibiotics.  Now I'm regretting it.  I wish I'd read replies sooner.

Thanks a bunch,

Tessa and Buddy

OKAY, BUDDY IS HOME...HOME....HOME. AND SAFE...SAFE...SAFE!!! YAAAAAAAAAY FOR BUDDY AND YAAAAAAAAAY FOR YOU!!!!!!clap

For you to have to deal with all this extra CRAP just blows my mind!!! I am soooo sorry for thst. No good deed goes unpunished, huh?

Where do you live? Perhaps there will be someone here who lives in your area and knows an atty.

And kudos to you for documenting everything a d kudos to thay WONDERFUL vet who is helping Buddy!

Do you have a friend or family member who could stay with Buddy while you go to work? If possible, I would not let him out of my sight!

I don't knlw the "legalities" of fostering, but I know the law of "humanity" and "mercy" and "morality" and you are doing EVERYTHING with Buddy's best interest at heart..EVERYTHING!!

BUDDY HAD YOUR NAME STAMPED ON HIS HEART THE DAY HE WAS BORN!!! Thank goodness YOU are here for him!

I cannot imagine how hard this would be to deal with Buddy's recovery AND to deal with all this other garbage. Buddy needs you now. He needs calm, rest, love, nurturing...and he has no one better for that than you. Clearly you are a STRONG ADVOCATE for Buddy! Stay calm, stay confident and just know that you and Buddy are meant to be together! Yeah...another "law"..the "Law of the Universe" says you two are now family and Buddy has the best forever home possible!!

LORI can give you more information about testing for MRSA . But right now you have him on antibiotics and it appears all his issues came straight from a botched surgery.

How does he seem today? I cannot imagine how he must hurt and how his poor body must be completely exhausted after two major surgeries. At least he has pain meds.

Is he interested jn food or water at all?

STANDING OVATION TO YOU!!! YOU ARE A SAINT!!!! We are cheering you and Buddy on like crazy!!

Thank you soooooo much for ypdating us. Keep your chocolate close by and devour as needed!! WE ARE HERE FOR YOU!! YOU ARE. NOT ALONE!!!

Sending love and healing energy...and a knowing that all is well with Buddy and you two WILL stay together!!

I am so HAPPY that sweet Buddy came through his surgery and is again home with you.  And THANK GOD you were given proper medications and instructions to help Buddy through this recovery period.  Like Sally said if you have somebody that could remain with Buddy while you're at work would be good.  I'd be a nervous wreck that these crazy shelter/rescue people would do something to try and snatch Buddy.  From what you described above with their behaviors thus far they're definitely in clean-up and cover our a$$ mode at this point.  The thought of them euthanizing animals to cover up mistakes or out of spite is just appalling.

Buddy is so lucky to have you fighting this fight for him!!!  I'd hate to see what would have happened to him if he hadn't ended up in your care.  I'm just so angry at what this group is doing that I've got tears in my eyes.  Like I've said before you're a true Angel on Earth and definitely Buddy's Guardian Angel!!

That crazy shelter/rescue group may have several people standing with them but you've got the entire Tripawd community standing beside you.  According to the top bar that's 7,794 members strong...take that crazy shelter/rescue group!!!

Hugs for you and Buddy both!

Ohhhh dear....Christine and Franklin are "pffed off" and that can be scary!! LOL! And Ive seen Christine pffed off! It's fun to watch...from a very safe distance!!!way-cool

I don't belong to facebooger, but that sounds like it could be an jnteresting place right about now!

As far as being here in the Tripawds site, I know I need to remind myself right now that we need to keep our focus on helping Buddy through his recovery. As Sahana said, he is so lucky to jave ended up in ner care and ultimately lucky to find the incredible support this site has to offer!!

This scenario is disturbing to us but Buddy's mom is taking the steps she and her vet feel appropriate and that is separate from what we do here. It looks like this is becoming a legal issue (ugh). Now what people do and say in facebooger is another whole issue (as long as no one is representing the Tripawds community in any way).

So, I, for one, am anxiously awaiting announcement of Buddy's first poop so we can have a pawty!!

To think about the bond you will have with this dog is beyond my comprehension! This boy is truly a miracle dog...as is his mom...err...she's not a miracle DOG....she's a miracle Saint!!

Sending lots of love and hugs!!

We have poop.  Yay for poop!  He had a good night and took his meds like a champ this morning.  I'm watching him closely and so far so good.

My husband and I both work 12 hour shifts so we have half the days off (together).  I work 10a to 10p and he works 6p to 6a.  Even on the days I work, my husband is here with him most of the day.  He picks our boys up from school in the afternoon before he leaves for work, so they are with him from the time Casey leaves until I get home.  He is never alone.  Even when I am working,  I come home for an hour lunch break and I get two 15 minute coffee breaks at home during my shift.  The only exception was Wednesday when I had training all day and couldn't come home.  My son noticed that he didn't look good Wednesday but he knew he wasn't looking good the night before and didn't know it had gotten worse and didn't know what to do.  He also didn't know what to look for just like I didn't.   Now that we know my boys will be a big help taking care of him.  They are great about taking care of the dogs and giving Buddy his meds.  My oldest had an alarm set to give him the half pills he came home with.

The shelter is just using my work schedule as an excuse.  It's really better than most people even if they don't have a job because,  not only is someone always here but half the nights,  my husband is here and awake all night to watch him.  Not many people can say they have 24 hour care even 50% of the time.

My ex husband is a lawyer and is a partner at an awesome firm.  He is a divorce lawyer and know nothing about this but I talked to one of his partners yesterday and he is helping me find someone. It's going to have to be someone who wants it on principle because there's not much money in it.  I can recover the actual cost, but punitive damages won't be much for a dog (rather than a human).

I'm watching him closely and he's doing great so far!

Thanks,

Tessa

Wow, you certainly have got your ducks in a row! Buddy is one lucky fellow.

I hope you can recover some of your costs, because it is certainly unfair what has happened. But I really hope someone (perhaps the 'good vet'?) takes professional action against the original vet. What he did was malpractice pure and simple. He deserves to lose his license so I certainly hope there is an avenue to report him to whatever licensing board your state has.

Active 10+ Pyr mix suddenly came up lame with ACL tear in left rear leg. Scheduled for a TPLO but final pre-op x-rays indicated a small suspicious area, possibly OSA, which could have caused the ACL tear. Surgeon opened the knee for TPLO but found soft bone. Biopsy came back positive for OSA. Became a Tripawd 9/18/14. Carbo6 with Cerenia and Fluids. Pain free and living in the moment. Crossed the Bridge on 7/12/15 after probable spread of cancer to her cervical spine. A whole lifetime of memories squeezed into 10 months. Here's her story: Eloise

Wow...you do have quite a bit of help in caring for Buddy!!  Buddy is so fortunate to have so many people looking after him.  You just never know the lengths to which people will go when they feel cornered and I'd just hate to see Buddy turn up "missing".

That aside we definitely celebrate the first poop after surgery around here!!!  My Leland didn't go for 5-6 days after surgery and when he finally did the poor boy had cotton and gauze in his poop.  We found out later he chewed up 3 catheters but I won't get started on that mess.  I'm just happy that Buddy is finally on the road to recovery and getting all the medications that he needs.

We'd love to see some happier pictures of Buddy when you get a chance!!

Sending hugs to Buddy, you, and your awesome family!!

He looks pathetic but he's actually quite content snuggled up in bed after getting home from surgery.

Finally home

He usually sleeps in his own bed in his little den under the bathroom counter.  He loves it there.  But after getting home from the hospital he just wanted Mommy.  He slept pressed up against me all night.  My husband took these as we were falling asleep.  Oh, and we just moved and I'm refinishing the bed so we just have a mattress sitting on the floor.  He doesn't have to jump up to get on the bed.  It's actually slightly lower than his body height.  No need to worry about jumping or falling.

So sorry for the unfortunate ordeal this is turning out to be for sweet Buddy, but I agree with Sally, Buddy's recovery is thee most important thing right now, and getting him through this serious rough spot physically. Everything else will work itself out, but Buddy is doing great from his second surgery to repair what could have been completely disastrous and heartbreaking.

Those amazingly adorable pictures of you and him, are so very sweet......he looks completely at peace, and very content. I am hoping his recovery goes very well, and other "things" go well for the both of you to remain with each other always. Your love and devotion to him are without question, and you are giving him the best life anyone possibly could. I will be keeping you, Buddy, and your family in my thoughts and prayers that everything works out for all of you.

He is still doing great.  He is happy and has energy but he's being a good boy and getting plenty of rest.  I could tell he was hurting last night right before he was due for pain meds.  He was laying on me (like always) and cried out and snapped his head towards his amp site twice,  the way he would if something had just stung or bit him there.  It was quick.  It seemed like a nerve pain, that sudden quick burning stabbing feeling you get when a nerve just fires off.  He was fine after his Tramadol though.

A shelter volunteer called me yesterday to check on him.  She was apologetic about all the miscommunication I've gone through.  With the 3 groups I've been dealing with, it was unclear to them who was supposed to be dealing with Buddy's case and it seems we fell through the cracks.

I told her we want to adopt him.  She said that he technically belongs to the rescue.  I told her the rescue is under the impression that I was not caring for him properly.  She said she would call them and explain but that she couldn't imagine them not letting me adopt him.  She said she would call me right back.  That was yesterday afternoon and I never heard back.

I love this dog and I would love to keep him.  My family loves him.  My dogs love him.  But I really want what is best for him.  I know that there are other people interested in adopting him.  They are good people.  Even one of the vets from the emergency clinic wants to adopt him.

The rescue group is supported by donations and Buddy's case has gotten alot of attention.  I have noticed in the past that the dogs who have gotten alot of attention  (like horrible abuse cases) have been adopted by wealthy families.  I wouldn't be surprised if he has been promised to someone like that.

As long as he has a good loving home with someone who loves him and gives him the special care he needs, I will be happy.  I just hope they allow me to keep him while he recovers.  This is his home and we are his family.  He does not need the stress of adjusting to a new home and feeling abandoned right now.

Time for my sweet boy's meds!

Thanks for all the support!

Tessa, your wiilngness to do what is in Buddy's best interest...whatever that may be...is truly selfless and show such character.

He clearly is attached to you and I can't help but hope you will end up bein his forever family.way-cool

It does sou d like hee having a few brief episodes of phantom pain . I'm glad the pain meds are helping. Sometimes a very, very light gentle massage seems to help, along with reassuring words.

To hear that he is already getting his energy back is just incredible!! This dog is one strong willed fella'!

We are all cheering for him! He has won our hearts too! Look forward to more great updates AND more sweet pictures of this precious soul!
