Peekabo Sadie the 3 - legged lady writing to ask about a persistent problem with incontinence...the vet did a urinalysis and determined as there is a small amount of blood in the urine, I need to go back on Amoxil (400mg. 2xdaily) to clear up infection and a possible UTI. Mom and Dad are a little tired of letting me out every 2/3/4 hours to pee, and the constant bed washing too. Sometimes, I don't even know I've wet my bed until Mom finds me and lets out a "oh baby girl" cry.

I'm 3-weeks post-amp, eating well and moving around very well - even climbing up stairs, but now I'm really feeling the discomfort and loss of my front left leg. I'm bored inside and can't walk outside - too much white stuff and too slippery.

Though, today, I'm going to visit my "pack" and am looking forward to the change of scenery. Perhaps that will help my mood and behaviour. As they say," a change is as good as a rest"!

If anyone has any ideas about how to help with my incontinence - short of wearing diapers, I know Mom would appreciate hearing some advice.

Keeping pawsitive, 19 days post-amp and counting!

Is your dog leaking urine or actually holding it but just having to go more often?  See my response to Barney B 's mom on UTI.  If your vet suspects an infection then the urine should be cultured, and amoxicillin alone is really not the best for a bladder infection.  Clavamox, Baytril, sulfa drugs are all good choices based on a culture.

If your dog is leaking then she probably needs medication to tighten her sphincter muscle.  There are 2 drugs commmonly used for this; phenylpropanolamine (PPA) brand name Proin or estrogen supplements (DES).  Many female dogs develop a urine leakage problem if they are spayed.

Your vet is smart to rule out a UTI first but if the culture is negative I might take an xray to rule out bladder stones (rare in large breeds) and then try the incontinence drugs.  Tazzie took DES for a year before her amputation but I stopped it when she was on chemo and so far she hasn't needed it again!
