The biopsy results were in and while it is "highly vacuolated typical of liposarcoma due to his age and sample size osteosarcoma cannot be ruled out."

While waiting for the results we already discuss that if they came back as cancer we would amputate and go forward with treatment.  I see many posts from people with dogs with osteosarcoma but I can't find many with liposarcoma.  I was wondering if anyone's pet had liposarcoma and if they could share their experiences.

It is so hard to see how he has cancer when he is such a goofy, spunky guy. Two days after his biopsy he hopped over to me with his tug o' war toy to play. It is going to very tough telling the kids who helped pick him out with the rescue group just a year ago.

I know it's soooo hard to not jump ahead. It's equally as hard to "hurry up and wait"!

For now, what you DO KNOW is your "goofy, spunky" guy is blissfully unaware of any ole' report and good care less.

What's this spunky pup's name? And we'd love to see more pictures when you have a moment.

Whatever "it" is, we are with you every step.of the way! You are not alone in this crazy journey!

Hugs!

His name is Chewie, as in Chewbacca, not because he chews things although at 1 yrs old he is still very much a chewer.

He had his amputation yesterday, right front leg. He is getting along very well on 3 legs already, probably because he is young and not very big (only about 40 lbs).

We are trying to figure out the best way to pick him up when we need to.  He is extremely active and I am very certain that once he is healed and over the pain he won't need much assistance with getting in/out of the car or jumping into beds (he did all of that when he was holding his paw up and not using it). I think the difficult for us in the following days as he starts to "feel" better is to keep him quiet.  He is still very much a puppy.

They sent the leg off to the pathologist to get a definitive diagnosis as to whether he has osteosarcoma or liposarcoma.  Once we have a diagnosis then we will begin the next phase.

Hi Chewie and family, welcome.

He's such a young dog! It's always a shock to even think that a dog that age can get cancer. We'll keep our paws crossed that it isn't.

Yes, young Tripawds are suuuuuper hard to keep calm after surgery. You can do lots to challenge his brain, instead of exhausting his body, like having the kids start to teach him dog tricks. Check out this fun forum topic:

http://tripawds.....-training/

Working on interactive games like this is very helpful in keeping him occupied and happily tired during recovery.

Be sure to check out our e-book Loving Life On Three Legs if you haven't already. We have lots of tips about keeping strong and staying healthy on three legs. Our Tripawds Gear blog and Tripawds Nutrition blog also has lots of ideas.

And I agree, don't jump ahead just yet. Take things one hoppy step at a time like Chewie and you can't go wrong.

Awe Chewie is adorable!  Glad he's doing so well after surgery.  Yes your biggest problem might well be keeping him reined in and not too active the first few weeks.  I'm so sorry you have to be here with such a young furface but I wanted to pop in and welcome you and let you know you will have a ton of support here.  Fingers and paws crossed here for you guys to get the best results you can from pathology report.  Please keep us posted on beautiful Chewie.  Hugs!

Hi Chewie and family heart

Very sorry to hear about Chewie ... life is definitely not fair ...

But, as Sally says, your boy does not know anything about being ill, all he wants is to enjoy life with his family and have his belly rubbed and ear scratched all day long.

It must be though to keep him still so soon after surgery being such a young dog ... but of paramount importance not to overdue it for now.

Have you got an harness for him?

We have a ruff wear harness , it really is the best for tripawds, it has a handle you can use to help him whenever needed.

My girl Eurydice wore a different harness during the first month following amp.

She wore it at all times with a t-shirt underneath to protect the incision.

And have you got carpets for traction ? If you have hard wood or slippery floors you should place carpets down to create paths for him to hop around safely. We also placed rubber underlay under the carpets for extra safety as Eurydice is quite large.

Being a puppy it's even more important, as you don't want him to slip and fall down as that could be a confidence  killer whilst he is learning how to hop on 3.

Let us know how he is doing, things will get much, much better once he has his stitches removed.

Sending you a big hug and big cuddles to your gorgeous boy heart

Eurydice 77kg/170lb Great Dane limping end of April 2016, amputation (right front leg/osteosarcoma) 4 May 2016 6 courses of carboplatin followed by metronomic therapy, lung mets found 30 Nov 2016. 3 courses of doxorubicin, PET scan 26 Jan 2017 showed more mets so stopped chemo. Holistic route April 2017. Lung X-ray 5 May 2017 showed several tennis ball size mets, started cortisone and diuretics. Miss Cow earned her XXL silver wings 12 June 2017, 13 months and 1 week after amputation and 6 1/2 months after lung mets, she was the goofiest dawg ever and is now happily flying from cloud to cloud woof woofing away :-)

Spunky Chewie ison tne road to recovery a d rid of that painful leg!

Chewie is still a bit "high" on hospital pain meds, so if he has a bit of crash in a day or two, that happens sometimes. Just keep his pain meds consistent. Youngster or not, it is major surgery and it does hurt!

Stay connected and keep us updated...And take care of yourself too!
