We are

http://tallboyo…..pawds.com/

and today is 1 week post amputation. Going pretty good – some seroma leaking but mostly good.

We are going to NEVOG

http://www.nevog.com/ for an appt with the oncologist on this Thursday and they are considering Bowser as a candidate for the following clinical trial.

http://www.nevo…..teosarcoma

Nothing is set in stone yet. So we are wondering about all of these drugs and the side effects.

Our regular vet was guessing we would be facing 6 rounds of carboplatin.

Any input, experience is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kim and Bowser

That sounds pretty similar to the route we went w/ Abby. We did 6 rounds of carbo, then started Palladia on M,W,F and cytoxan/piroxicam on the other days. She had to come off the palladia after 3 months due to recurring (and worsening) GI side effects and then we did the cytoxan/piroxicam every day. (At that point we also added in artemisinin, just so you know what all we did.)

We had 15 mo. with our girl, basically a year of that with lung mets. Except for the GI side effects and some tiredness around carbo treatments 5 & 6, she did great and lived large (running and playing on the beach for an hour almost every day) for most of that time until near the end.

It would be nice to get in the trial and save some of the cost of the drugs! They are quite expensive – esp'y the Palladia.

If you have any specific questions, you can always PM me, but I don't have any regrets about the path we took and think we had a lot of good quality time with our girl.

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. We hope you won't be playing any guessing game much longer. Looks like Tall Boy will be in good hands at NEVOG, and we're exciting to hear how that trial goes. Search these forums and the blogs and you will find much discussion about Carboplatin and metronomics.

Hi Kim and Bowser!

Tasha is in the same clinical study at NEVOG after her amputation at Tufts one month ago for osteo.  She's had one round of the carboplation and is getting her 2nd round this Wednesday.  I questioned the four rounds of carboplatin vs. the six rounds that I read most people had done.  The doctor said there wasn't any scientific evidence that the extra two doses made a difference.  Tasha did great with her first round and had absolutely NO side effects.  I know each dog is different and they warned me she may have GI issues, experience lethargy or vomit and sent us home with anti-nausea medication.  I didn't need the medication and was shocked at how well she handled it…so much so I jokingly questioned if they even gave her carboplatin!

The staff and doctors have been great at NEVOG.  The only negative thing I could say about them is I find they are very scientific\statistics type of doctors with no thought for homeopathic methods or supplements.  Maybe all doctors are that way.  I listen to what they say and advise but I also listen to what others here at Tripawds have done and what has worked.

I'm glad to hear Tallboy is doing well.  I will keep my eyes out for him at NEVOG.

OK, I am confused. Is Bowser the dog or the husband? So who is Tallboy?

Our Sammy did six rounds of chemo, but we did not do the other drugs. We did, however, try to add artemisinin, which has good anecdotal evidence. It was also the subject of a clinical trial at Ohio State — but I don't know if they have released their results. Unfortunately, Sammy, who had mild epilepsy, started having frequent seizures so we had to drop artemisinin.

Sammy lived for more than a year, but I sometimes wonder if he would have lived longer if we hadn't done a clinical trial before the amputation. Doctors at the University of Illinois injected Sammy's leg with a nanoparticle that delivered chemo directly to the tumor. Results have not been published yet to our knowledge. Just maybe, we thought, what they found through this trial could help "cure" other dogs. At the same time, it delayed Sammy's amputation for more than three weeks. Who knows how much the cancer spread during that time?

Yet clinical trials are the hope of the future. Without them, we would be stuck just doing the same things — or combinations of the same things — and relying on luck and unknown factors for our outcomes. While not the only reason to participate, participating in a clinical trial can be a HUGE money-saver.

Please know that your time with your baby will be special. We relished every second and were totally awed by the strength and resilience of our golden warrior. Good luck, Kim, Bowser and Tallboy! (playing it safe with the names)

Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011 Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more. Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.
