If you're reading this, you may have noticed how things look a little different around here. But the recent changes go much deeper than mere aesthetics. Read on for details about what this upgrade means to Tripawds members and reply to comment with any related questions or feedback.

Attention Mod Pawd:

Please check your PM inbox for an important message about moderating posts from the Admin Bar.

Why the Upgrade?

We always keep current with the Simple:Press Forum WordPress Plugin that powers these forums to ensure compatibility and uninterrupted service for the Tripawds discussion forums. This 5.0 upgrade, however, was a long awaited major rewrite with a much more streamlined core resulting in a vast performance improvement – our top priority. With the new plugin now using add-ons to extend functionality which was not always used, we have eliminated certain features to further reduce database queries and enhance the user experience here.

What's new?

At first glance, members will notice the new style. We did our best to match the look of the old forums to minimize shock, while utilizing a slightly modified version of the plugin's new default theme.

Visit your Forums profile to review the new format and update the various new options available.

NOTE: Forum Signatures are now limited to a height of 150 pixels to avoid clutter on forum pages and keep page length to a minimum. If your signature has been cut off, simply click the profile button at top right and visit the Edit Signature tab. Keep your signature brief and complete the Biography section from the Edit Profile tab for more details or include a link to your blog or a forum topic for further detail, if desired.

If you have a Tripawds Blog, be sure to include the URL in the Website field on the Edit Profile tab and an icon with link will be added next to all your posts. use the Identities tab to add any social networking profiles you wish to share with members.

From the Options tab in your profile you can choose to receive email notification PMs or opt out of Private Messaging all together. Use the Posting Options tab to auto-subscribe to all topics you post in.

Your Private Messaging Buddy list can now be managed from the Buddies and Adversaries tab in your profile. Visit the Adversaries sub-tab to opt out from receiving Private Messages or viewing posts from specific members.

What's Missing?

Based on feedback (or the lack thereof) for our upgrade announcement we have removed the following functions which were rarely used in these forums:

  • Watches: Subscriptions are still available for being notified of topic updates.
  • Topic Tags: More time was spent instructing users on the proper use of tags than we believe benefited members in their search for related topics.
  • Topic Status: This was only used in the Tech Support forum
  • Custom Profile Fields: Redundant profile fields have been removed. Please update your new profile fields.
  • Post Reporting: In more than five years we may have received three reports of questionable posts. Please use PM system if necessary.
  • Optional Editors: TinyMCE (Rich Text) is the easiest most popular post editor.
  • Excess Smileys: Redundant smileys have been removed. Previously used smileys in existing posts will still display and more fun emoticons can be found in the Tripawds repawsitory.

big-blink Whew! Did we forget anything? Upgrades like this are always a daunting task and quite time consuming. Your support for our continuing efforts to maintain this community in top-notch form is greatly appreciated.

Any questions?

Good job Admin guy!

Two things- one specific to me- there is a forum post from Chloes mom (Nicole) in Anything Goes asking about a Dog Cancer Data Base.  I have opened and closed that thread many times and it still shows as unread.  I cleared cache and restarted browser.  All the other foum topics I opened now show as read (actually no icon showing unread posts)

The second- I notice that you end up in different parts of a topic thread depending on how you open it.  If you open from the list titled Unread and recently updated topics you go to the first post on the first page of the thread.  If you open from the drop down menu titled New/Recently Updated Topics  you go to the last post on the last page of the thread.  Was that intentional?  It is useful if you know how many posts are in a topic- for example on the Eating Healthy, Weekly Coupon codes and special offers I would usually want to open at the end to see the most recent offer.  But in a new topic I hadn't read I would want to start at the top.  However I am just now noticing you can't see how many pages are in a topic.

Lunch time is over- I'll check out more when I get home tonight.

Good job Admin guy!

Thanks! And thank you for your help during testing.

...forum post from Chloes mom ... still shows as unread.

If you're talking about within the Admin Bar (postbag), this is because we are leaving it as unread for Jerry to see there. If you are talking about within the Quicklinks drop-down menu, it would make sense that it should show as read, if you have read it. If the latter is the case, please "Mark This Post As Read" from the Admin bar and see what happens.

If after that, the post still shows as unread in your Quicklinks menu please try using the "Mark All Posts as Read" icon

and report back with results so I can describe this behavior to the plugin developers.

...If you open from the list titled Unread and recently updated topics you go to the first post on the first page of the thread.

If you click the topic title in your Unread list, you will indeed be redirected to the first page of that topic. Click the Last Post icon last post icon

beneath a topic title in that list and you will be taken right to the last post in the thread.

If you open from the drop down menu titled New/Recently Updated Topics  you go to the last post on the last page of the thread.

Yesh, this Quicklinks menu differs in that it will take you directly to the most recent undread post within a topic.

... you can't see how many pages are in a topic.

Correct. Only the Forum view (list of topics) and the Topic view (list of posts) will show you the page count for the given forum or topic. The former will include direct links to the first and last post and each page, and the latter will have links to each page at the top and bottom.

My inbox won't let me read the follow up/additional messages in regards to your mod pawd message this morning.

When I am on the forums, my inbox says I have 2 messages.  But when i click into the PM system, it says "0".  I click the "expand all" and I can only see your original message not anyone's follow up/additional message.

Please check you inbox for new messages to troubleshoot this further. If you're still seeing no new messages when clicking the message thread on the left side of your inbox, please view the thread and send a screenshot of the whole inbox to admin [at] tripawds dot com.

You should also now have a PM from betaman. Please view that message thread and reply, assuming it is visible. If not, please send a PM to betaman and cc admin.

Thanks!

Can any other moderators confirm this behavior?

Still no luck!  Just sent you my login info - that'll be easier than a bunch of screen shots!

I did not mean the admin bar, I know admins control that. I tried opening it from from within the forum page and from the drop down menu and it still said unread.  All the other forum posts I opened showed as read.  I didn't get a chance to try the "Mark All Posts as Read" icon.  When I got home tonight there was another post in the thread, after I opened it (from the drop down I think) it showed as read.  I'll let you know if it happens again.

Based on the PM traffic it looks like Cometdog's problem is solved.  I did not have any trouble with the PMs.

Two more questions:

Is there a way to see if we have posted in a topic?  We had the red and black flags before.

I am trying to edit my signature box, but I have no tools.  I want to link to Maggie's story but I don't see a way short of posting the URL.  This could be another CRS moment, but I had a link to Maggie's story in my old signature (which I accidentally deleted- it says to save changes but there is no save button).

And another thing...

If people care about time zones they should check their profiles.  Mine was reset to Denver, maybe that is the default?

OK, now I'm a little confused (surprise!).

Last night and this morning I am having the same problem I described previously:

there is a forum post from Chloes mom (Nicole) in Anything Goes asking about a Dog Cancer Data Base.  I have opened and closed that thread many times and it still shows as unread.  I cleared cache and restarted browser.  All the other foum topics I opened now show as read (actually no icon showing unread posts)

This is now happening in several topics, but not all.

The only place I find a "Mark all Posts as Read" button is in View New Posts, which when you roll the cursor over it says open/close the admin postbag. And if I click mark post as read it does change the status on the forum view and the pull down menu.  But I though the number of unread posts would stay the same (button to the right of the View New Posts button) until Jerry read them.

I also have a delete this post button, which I don't think I had before?

Sorry is this is just my CRS stuff again- but if I had a delete button before I think I would have deleted spam instead of waiting for you to do it.

I don't know if this is the right place to post this, but since the forum upgrade, I've been booted out 3 times while in the middle of typing a reply on a post. I'll be happily typing along and then all of a sudden, I'm booted back to the main forums page, where I can see that someone has just posted a reply in the same topic. It seems like when they post their reply, I get booted and lose what I've already typed. I have to go back in and start over - and hope that I finish typing my reply before someone else posts.

Is that just me?

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Hmm... we'd love to hear from anyone else experiencing this behavior.

We'd also like to know what device and browser you're using when the issue occurs, and which topics and when so we can try to pinpoint a cause.

I'm trying to reformat my signature box, and haven't been able to figure out how to get things centered or other types of paragraph formating...  Your sig appears centered between your pix but I can't get mine to do that....

OMG, this is the 7th time I've tried to reply. I get part way through my reply, and then get booted out.

Like I said, I also got booted I think it was 3 times yesterday. I'm not sure if it was always on my iPad, but possibly it was. (The previous 6 times on this particular reply were on my iPad, so I am now trying my PC using Firefox.)

I know it happened while trying to post on the Rumbles vet closing post yesterday and I forget the other one.

Maybe it is just my iPad, because I seem to be managing to make it through this reply without getting booted....

@nicki We modified your signature to fit. You should be able to edit it to your liking.

Note to All: A bit of HTML knowledge is helpful when formatting signatures. Hint, using <br class="clear" /> at the end of lines will help.

@jackie Sorry for the inconvenience. We're looking into this further, but it would seriously help if you can confirm if the issue only occurs on the iPad. Simple:Press currently does not offer total mobile support so if you can confirm what Mobile Browser Agent and what Mobile Touch Agent your iPad is using, that would be most helpful too. Also you mentioned above that you can tell exactly when it happens. If it does happen again, please provide the specific time you are redirected to the main page so we can search our error logs. Thanks!
