An "avatar" is a small icon or image that will appear next to your any posts you author.
The default avatar is not very personal.
Adding your own personal avatar is easy …
- Select a photo that you want to use as your avatar.
- Use an image editing program (i.e.; Photoshop) to crop the the image so it is square.
- Resize the file to 50 x 50 pixels at 72dpi and save it as a JPEG.
- Login to the Tripawd forums and click on the "Profile" link (top, right).
- Click the "Browse" button where it says "Upload Avatar."
- Locate the file you saved and select it.
- Click on "Update Profile" … That’s it!
While you’re there, you can add a signature and any other details you wish to your profile.
Hope this helps!

If you don't have the necessary software, or don't know how to resize your photo to 50 x 50 pixels, fear not. Forum member cgrange has graciously volunteered to create avatar images for anyone who needs the help.
Just email her your photo, and she'll send you back a corrected file that you can use following the directions above. Thanks cgrange! This forum is just filled with great people.

Automatically create an avatar online!
Bella Donna Took found that this helpful website shrinks avatar photos for you. Choose your photo and enter 50 as the avatar size. The website will automatically resize the picture and give your cropped options to choose from.
Just download the one you want. Then follow the instructions above for uploading it to this site and adding it to your profile. It's that simple.

Wow, looks easy enough, but I couldn't do it with my picture. The first one I put up I made 50x50 and 72 dpi and it was all blurry and pixelated. Then I went to the one site you mentioned to upload my photo and all I ended up with was a black box. So now my avatar is a black box. What am I doing wrong?

Hmmm .. not sure, looks like you uploaded the bad file created by that site. Feel free to send us the photo you want to use, and we'll gladly optimize it for you.

I'm not entirely sure my avatar uploaded. I followed the instructions nearly.
pic is 48x50 px 72dpi .png format
Does it have to be exactly 50x50?

Yes, the image file must be 50 x 50. PNG will work fine, as will JPG and GIF.

I've tried creating an avatar – I can crop my image, but can't figure out how to size it to 50 x 50. I don't have photoshop… I tried going to the site listed above, but the image just came back as a black box. Also tried sending it to you at http://www.tripawds.com/contact/, but it says the file type won't go through. (it's a jpg) is there another way for me to send it to you? thanks!!!

Hi Jim, I tried changing Kellie's Avatar picture for a newer one and I had no problem using the browser and bringing the photo in but once I update the profile the old photo stays..does it take a certain amount of time for it to upload? Thxs.

The avatar image should upload quickly and immediately replace the old one upon saving changes to your profile. The blue system status message will indicate any error. Make sure the imge file is 50x50 pixels and saved as a JPG or GIF. Let us know if you still have trouble.

I typically don't have problems with things like links and avatars, but this forum isn't playing nice! I have resized a photo to the correct size twice now (with my own software, then when that didn't work using the avatar resizer mentioned above) and it simply isn't working for me. Grrr.

Sorry you're having trouble Carina. If you provide details about any problems you encounter we could sure help a lot more.
For the avatar, ensure the file is 50 x 50 pixels at 72 dpi and saved as a .png, .jpg or .gif file … I find .jpg works best. Feel free to email us the image to resize – jerry (at) tripawds.com – but for us to upload it to your account we would have to reset your password.

I will email it to you. Thanks. :)
I haven't a clue, after clicking "update profile" nothing at all happens. Can I just blame it on Windows Vista? I like to blame stuff on Vista. I'm no stranger to forums and computers, I don't know why it's not working the way it should….

Windoze is always the culprit if you ask me! ;-) Others have fixed certain problems with the forums by adjusting their security/firewall settings. But don't ask me how, I'm a Mac guy!
