We are excited to announce Spirit Scout's little brother, TOM, was born yesterday at Kyon Kennels in Ontario, Canada — 1082 miles away!!  After Scout died, I was hesitant to get another Golden Retriever, as their cancer rates are astronomical.  However, after much soul searching, I realized that the only dog for me, for us, was a golden.  So, I searched for a breeder with an outstanding longevity record, and we'll take our chances– should cancer strike again, at least I'll be well educated and well prepared (thanks, in large part, to everyone here at tripawds)  I'll post pics of our newest boy soon– we'll bring him home to Oklahoma in late March.

Scout: January 31, 2002 to November 7, 2011 Scout's diagnosis was "poorly differentiated sarcoma"; amputation 1/11/2011.  Scout enjoyed 9 fantastic years on 4 legs and 9 glorious months on 3 legs.  If love alone could have saved you…

Prayers needed for Tom's sire, Euchre.  He is undergoing emergency surgery after ingesting a leather glove.  We know all about goldens and their love of anything edible (or not so edible..)  Hoping he'll be ok– not fair– proud papa yesterday and now this.

Congratulations to all of you, this is so sweet to hear. We all know the right type of dog for our pack, and by staying true to your feelings you can't go wrong with this new pup.

I'm super sorry to hear about Euchre. Ouch! We hope he's OK, poor guy.

It's better to hop on three legs than to limp on four.™

Tried to post earlier but it went into cyber nowhere land…

A sad update – Euchre died last night after two surgeries to save his life.  Although we never met Euchre, we had fallen in cyber-love with him.  From such a high of 8 beautiful Euchre pups  on Thursday to a devastating low  on Friday– poor Karin and Wally at Kyon. To lose such a beautiful, young, healthy boy to such a stupid accident breaks my (already broken) heart.

Scout– please welcome Euchre at the bridge and tell him his boy Tom has found himself an excellent pack.

Congratulations on the new pup, but such sad news about his pop. So many will be there to meet him at the bridge.

Enjoy your new pup!
Jackie, Angel Abby's mom

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Catherine, I am so sorry to post so late on this but I have been sketchy in my site viewing and, lately, rather preoccupied with Elizabeth and her Sammy. Sometimes I get on the site, get all teary and get off as fast as I can.

But — first off: I didn't realize until today when I saw your beautiful tribute to Scout that his death had been so recent. I guess I was so wrapped up Sammy's downhill slide (he died Dec. 5) and then trying to get through Christmas that I didn't see the post. I am so sorry for your loss. He was absolutely gorgeous and reminds me of our daughter's Sosa quite a bit. Your tribute, though it shows your grief, also shows your joy. Goldens are loaded with personality, and Scout's antics and quirks made me smile. We always say that Sammy (and Sosa) made us laugh every day. They are an odd combination of intelligence, sweetness, brattiness and drama, aren't they?

Like you, we thought about the daunting statistics when deciding to get a puppy. But, like you, we decided it would be another golden for us. At the bottom of her posts, Shelby's Mom quotes Betty White, who says: "Once someone has had the good fortune to share a true love affair with a golden retriever, one's life and one's outlook is never quite the same again."

We feel the same and will be getting our new little boy — Wrigley, or as he will no doubt be known for the first few months, Wiggly Wrigley — in early April. We can't wait bury our faces in golden fur and incessantly vacuum those fluffy furballs floating on the hardwood floors. I must say, though, we met an 11-week old recently that reminded us how much work puppies can be!

So, congratulations on the birth of your new puppy. I can't wait to see photos of him! I sincerely hope he fills the hole in your heart with many years of love and fun.

Also, I am so sorry about Euchre. It seems so often that as we gain a life, we lose one. I suppose that is a kind of balance, but it sucks, doesn't it?

— Beth and Spirit Smilin' Sammy

Smilin' Sammy, March 16, 2004 – Dec. 5, 2011 Golden retriever, diagnosed with osteosarcoma in September 2010 — right front leg amputated November 2010. He fought valiantly to stay with us; but a second diagnosis of osteosarcoma, this time in his left front leg, was more than our golden warrior could overcome. He loved his pack — and everyone else he met.
We loved him even more. Thanks for the pennies, Sammy. They helped.

Question, when Tom barks, will he also say, "eh?"

Congrats on your new Golden, may he have a long and carefree life.

I think Tom will be one confused boy– a Canadian Okie– "woof–eh–y'all"  kinda sounds like "buffet"…  anyone thinking treat buffet courtesy of Zeus?
