Thanks to everyone who sent their good wishes and kind thoughts - and reassurance. Im glad to say that Winston is doing quite a bit better now - and its now day 12 post op.  His incision is looking good - no problems with fluid collection etc etc.  I have phased out the Tramadol and like others I can report that he is now alot perkier and greeting visitors at the door with a big tail wag etc. However, we have had a ( hopefully minor) setback and I would grateful for your comments.  I think we went too far on our first leashed walk - he was feeling to well that he wanted to go further than him mom had intended - and I rather foolishly let him.  The next day he developed a limp in his front right leg - the same side as his amputation at the back.  I am wondering if he has strained it, or that it is taking too much weight now because of his lack of one back leg. Has anyone else experienced this?  I took him to his vet on Monday and she couldnt find anything worrying - so prescribed Rimadyl and told me to watch and wait.  Perhaps Bella's heated pad would help?  I will take him to his specialist orthopeadic vet early next week if its no better by Friday.  I know osteosarcoma doesnt strike in two legs - but Im hoping its not a torn ligament- which means pretty serious surgery.

Hi Winston's mom,

Glad to hear that Winston is doing much better.  Mom and I had been wondering how Winston was doing.  We checked everyday ... and no update from Winston's mom .... and still no update on Winston!  We were getting anxious.

I got three times a day very short walks for the first few weeks. About only 200m each walk.  It wasn't until 2 months later that my mom started allowing me to go further each time.

~70% of our body weight is in the front, so front-leg amputees, in theory, have more stress on their remaining front limb.  My thinking is that with two front legs, Winston should be in a better position than some of us who lost a front leg.

His limping might just well be that he got carried away during the walk.  Be patience, things will get better and better each day.  Take him for frequent short walks.

Winston is probably just tired from overdoing it too soon. I didn't go on a walk for a couple weeks. And the first time was barely half way around the block. Much shorter walks, more often is the key untilhis strength returns.

Bella's Hot Cold Pain Relief Pack is indeed a big help. I love mine! If there is swelling, or the leg feels warm, put it in the freezer for a couple hours and strap it on. Otherwise heat it in the microwave and the warmth is soothing. I never try to bite at mine or shake it off like when my people put silly hats on me.

And remember! If you order from Bella's, you can save 10% by using the Coupon Code: TRIPAWDS.
