Hello All, I write this with a heavy heart as I confirmed last Wednesday that Thisbe has another mast- cell tumor, 7 weeks out from her amputation.  She was doing great and then about a week ago she got super- lethargic and stopped eating and on Easter Sunday, this massive swelling started happening right above her amputation.  We took her to the emergency vet clinic and she had 105 degree fever and lots of inflammation.  The ER doctor aspirated it and gave her some pain meds and sent us home.  Monday morning we were at our vet's office to see the vet that did her amputation, my vet was on vacation but he knew all about Thisbe's case.  The look on his face I can only describe as horrified.  He was very concerned, said he believed this to probably be another MCT, was worried about her now 104 fever and the size of the swelling that popped up overnight (or did it?)  The Monday before she went to get her Lepto shot and they noticed a bump but decided it was part of the re- musculature of her shoulder after the amputation.  Wednesday he called me and told me it was another MCT (from the aspiration.)  We went to see a veterinary oncologist today and she didn't do any tests, just a physical exam and read over all the notes and previous labs.  She went on how she wish we had biopsied the amputation, or got a grade, or why didn't the lymph node get taken, etc.  During Thisbe's amputation the doc told me the lymph node was so small it couldn't be found, and they didn't want to dig down through her delicate tissue and arteries to find it.  This oncologist though thinks that since it's on the same side, even though her anatomy and lymph nodes are a little rearranged on that side, this is probably a travel MCT, not a new one, but we can't be sure.  She was very pragmatic and spoke quickly and told us about some things like radiation, Palladia (we did Kinavet previously unsuccessfully), and said that the margins were too undefined to do surgery, she didn't think it would help.

We left with pamphlets and the promise to call in a couple of days after we thought about it.  I'm seeing my vet tomorrow morning, to talk to her since she's been on vacation while all of this happened.  The oncologist wouldn't give anything solid, but said she doesn't think we will be able to cure Thisbe of the MCT's.  That even though they are not graded they seem aggressive bc of the size and quick swell.  She will prob continue to get them.  She said radiation, though expensive, can help on MCT's though, but only sometimes.  ???   I know we couldn't get any definitive answer, but I need as much info. as I can to make pretty sure I'm not putting her through a lot and its not going to help at all, though I know that's not something that's predictable.  I asked her if the radiation did work, would it buy us 5 years or so, and to my surprise she said, no, 1-2 if we're lucky.  However, I can't do nothing.  I am leaning towards doing radiation followed by Palladia, as she tolerated Kinavet side effects well, though it didn't seem to work too good.  I don't know, this is all so depressing.  I was so happy after the amputation, and then already it's back again.  In the meantime, my grandfather whom I have been taking care was placed on Hospice today, and my birthday was yesterday... the hits just keep on coming...  sorry guys, just feeling sorry for myself- and Thisbe, I guess.   When it rains... it pours.  Has anyone had success or no success with radiation treatment on MCT's?  Did you also have surgery and/ or do chemo?

I see Karen, Pug Maggie's Mom (among others) is on now and probably giving you some good first hand information.

Its rotten that you are having to.deal with this. And your brandfather...all these things...ugh! You've EARNED the right to jave a pity pawty! We all do around here on any given day. You and Thistle Sue are our family and we are here to support you.

I know Sue was feeling good up to this point. I hope during all this they have done things to get her fever down and get her feeling perkier.

It kinda' leeves me that the O co spent a lot of time with "shuddas". Hindsight is a waste of your energy. You need to be with a team who can give you options based on today...yesterday.

You WILL come up with a plan of action...Western, Easteern, Hlosti, or a combo of all. You will find the least invasive way to give Thistle Sue more time for loving and spoiling.

I knkw it's hard ro focus on anything but the negative right now, but remember, NOTHING has changed in Sue's world! She has no plans of going anywhere anytime soon, okay?

We're all cheeri g for you Thistle Sue! And Kendra, in spite of the challenges, gove yourself permission to have a belated virthday, okah?

Had you not been born, Thistle Sue would not have known what @ove felt @ike and your Grandfather would not have had all the smiles and joys only a wonderful granddaughter like you could jave given him.

So you and Sue jave a little cake and ice cream. You'll both feel better.

Sending love

Ohhhh my gosh. {{{{{hugs}}}}} That breaks my heart, all of ours, but that doesn't mean this is hopeless. I feel so badly that you're going through so much right now, because I know it feels like everything is crashing down. And I am so sorry for that. I know I'd be a mess.

But here's the pawsitive way of looking at it: Palladia is one of the greatest cancer therapies that's come our way, ever, and knocking out MCT is what it does best. I know it's pricey but if it's in your budget why not give it a try and see what happens? I just had the honor of talking to an oncologist who was one of the first to help get it released, and he is such a believer in Palladia, says it's one of the most effective therapies out there for MCT.

One thing that has me wondering: could it be that part of the rapid development of the MCT was her immune system going into overdrive by the vaccine she received? And if so, I would ask your onco about their recommendations to boost her immune system in order to help bring this under control. I know that therapies like K9 Immunity do help, so if she's not already on it, then why not give it a try?

Meanwhile, remember, she doesn't know what the report says. She feels crappy I'm sure and just wants to feel better, but she's not counting days or focusing on prognosis. Keep strong and she will feel the same way, I guarantee it. And lean on us, that's why we are here.

xoxo

Oh Kendra, I'm so sorry it came back so fast.  I HATE mast cell.

I chose not to pursue radiation with my pug Maggie because she did not do well with anesthetic and they have to be under for each treatment.  Tripawd Rio waged a long battle against MCT and did rad at one point before her amp.  Rio crossed back in 2012 and her mom is not active here anymore.  But you might look through Rio's Blog for information.

Before making any treatment decisions I would do an abdominal ultrasound and maybe check some lymph nodes. If the cancer has spread there that would help dictate direction.

I don't want to give any false hope- recurrence after so short a time is a bad sign.  But quad pug Tani had recurring MCTs.  She was first diagnosed in 2007 when 3 tumors were removed from her belly.  Then in 2011 tumors started popping up again.  I had two removed and before the path report came back I found 3 more.  Our oncologist (who had also treated Maggie) said that the quick recurrence probably meant that the cancer was aggressive.  Because of many other physical issues and her age I chose not to do any treatment. Tani passed in February of 2015 at almost 15 years old due to complications from a stroke. Tani had around 12 tumors overall, Maggie had 6 or 7, one about 6 months before her amp.

It is unfortunate that the tumor removed with the leg was not graded, but that is past nothing to do about it now.  I just went back and read your first post- so you have done kinivet but no other chemo?  After her amp Maggie's prognosis was downgraded because of lymph node involvement.  We did 6 months of chemo alternating two meds.  You can read about it if you like, the link is in my signature below.  Did the oncologist talk about the kind of chemo Maggie did?  Seems odd to me that she wouldn't even offer that as an option.  Kinivet and palladia were not available when Maggie had her amp.

If there is anything I can do to help please PM me.

Update on Thisbe Sue!

Decided after talking to my vet a few weeks ago to go to a specialist in Pittsburgh for Thisbe's MCT.  They did an ultrasound and confirmed that Thisbe had mast cells in her spleen, but no other organs.  This specialist was wonderful, but she basically told me the same thing, esp now since it has metastatic spread.  She also let me know that it is in the pre- scapular lymph node, so it was probably there microscoping in the axillary lymph node before amputation.  Looking back, we should have done chemo right after the surgery, though my vet didn't think it was necessary.  So, with metastatic spread, we weren't a candidate for radiation.  So, we decided to do a combo of Vinblastine and Palladia.  We did two weeks and went back last Wednesday.  She said we would know by then if it was working or not.  Thisbe tolerated the Palladia well and I was hopeful, but I couldn't tell if it had shrunk, but I didn't think it had gotten bigger, and she was doing great.  They confirmed with measuring and bloodwork that the combo did work.  Yay!  Thisbe achieved a partial remission (almost half the size by the measurements they gave me).  So, were continuing another cycle.  All have said that they can't "cure" her of this, but we're buying time.  Since she is tolerating the meds with (knock on wood) minimal side effects and is happy and healthy, and back to her old self, I'm happy for whatever time I get with her.  It's hard to realize that we can't cure her.... they keep telling me this is palliative care.  I am realistic, but I know Thisbe is a fighter.  She may defy the estimates they give me for how long she'll have.  I might not see her live into a ripe old age, but I'm happy for the time we have together.

Well ua' know wjat. I call this REALLY good news on Thisbe's journeh! She IS a fighter and she IS Thisbe and not a statistic! She certainly doesn't have a timeframe on her butt!

All Thisbe knows is she is feeling better and getting loved and spoile 24/7! She's not worried about the tomorrows or days on a calendar! She is living in the moment and certainly isn't letting anything interfere with your time together!

Keep on loving and spoiling her, take lots of pictures and videos, give lots of treats and tummy rubs and make everyday THISBE SUE DAY!! You have a great attitude and that's very healing!

We're all cheering for you Thisbe Sue...cheering loudly and non-stop!

Love and hugs!

What great news!  Your story was breaking my heart, but I am so glad you will get more quality time together!

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

All have said that they can't "cure" her of this, but we're buying time.

Just for the record- that is what they told me after Maggie's amp.  There are exceptions to the dire statistics and you might as well assume Thisbe Sue is going to be one of the exceptions until she tells you otherwise!

Thank you for the update.  Not the best news on the spread- but great news on the effect of the chemo!

And the best news is that Thisbe is happy and back to her old self!
