Sebastian, our 6 year old Golden Doodle was initially diagnosed with osteosarcoma. We skipped the bone biopsy and went straight to the amputation. The post amputation biopsy revealed chondoblastic osteosarcoma, staged at grade 1.

Can anyone advise if there are any prognosis difference between the subtypes of osteosarcoma or the significance of the grades in terms of survival times?

We are going the homeopathic route and are also using artemisinin and changing to at least a half-raw diet. Any tips to help with this transition would be greatly appreciated.

Sebastian is also going to do a blog for this site with his updates. Here he is, about a week after his surgery.

Oh be still my heart, Sebastian is one gorgeous pup! I love the cone, it almost looks like he's wearing a college graduation gown with honors tassles 😉  I guess you could say he graduated from recovery right? Yay!

Honestly I can't recall the difference in prognosis between the osteosarcoma types. Scientifically speaking I'm sure they are out there. But I'll give you my best advice: don't focus on those numbers, because they are often wrong. Statistics and prognosis figures don't take into account your Sebastian, his health, his DNA, etc. He could blow those numbers off the charts and we hope with all our heart that he does. And realistically, it's possible. We've seen it happen many times here and while not every dog will outlive the prognosis, we know it can happen because it happened with Tripawds founder Jerry G. Dawg, who lived two years beyond cancer with a similar treatment approach that you're thinking of.

For tips and nutrition ideas we encourage you to visit the Tripawds Nutrition blog and our Eating Healthy Discussion  Forum. In fact, you'll find you're in good company with Maddie's people as they are also taking the same non-chemo route.

Thanks so much for joining us here!

OH I'm in love!  Sebastian is a real stunner!  I don't know the difference between the types of sarcoma but stage one of any type of cancer sounds very optimistic!  So yay!   When we got our new GSD puppy we intended to go half raw half a good quality (if there is such an animal) kibble.  I wasn't comfortable making our own so we mixed commercial raw primal with kibble.  Some say to give one raw meal and one kibble meal as they digest at different rates.  New puppy Hank did well with it but my 6 year old collie didn't do so well with it had a hard time with raw.  Loose stools, gurgling stomach.  He's my sensitive stomach guy.    So since I knew I wanted to give them both some "real food" to enhance nutrition and raw wasn't working I started lightly cooking a topper for them both.  So now I cook ground turkey, ground beef , or ground chicken up with some water and add some pumpkin, blueberries, sweet potatoes, cauliflower and sweet potato, and applesauce (organic non sweetened)  Not all together.  Sometimes it's ground turkey, pumpkin and blueberries.  Sometimes it's gr beef, minced sweet potatoes and cauliflower and applesauce.  I just mix it up. It doesn't need to be balanced exactly because they're getting that hopefully from the kibble but adds some whole real foods to their diet. Both boys have thrived on this.  I did have Riley's bloodwork checked and it was perfect. I'm sure your holistic person can give you some great pointers on some superfoods to be incorporating into his diet.  Jerry has given great resource links to the nutrition just wanted to share my experiences with you and what did and didn't work for us. 😀  Give that boy a big hug for us and keep us posted on him!

Thanks for the kind words.

Sebastian updated his blog, but cliff notes for this weekend - he got his staples out this weekend, finished his pain meds, started his half raw diet. But the best part was this morning, when he hopped along the fence line and barked for the first time since before his surgery! The moment I heard him (his mom let him out this morning) - I jumped on my bed and looked out the window and there he was, hopping along the fence line and barking (there is a walking path on the other side of the fence).

It felt so good to see/hear him "protecting the house".

He still needs plenty of down time for stretching and resting. Here is a quick pic of him resting for the next time he needs to protect the house!

Awww look at that power paw! What a darling!

Staples out AND fence running? Yay! Isn't it great when they start doing all those things they used to do? When that sparkle comes back, life is good again. SO glad to know that you and Sebastian are on the path.

What a handsome boy! He looks like a sweetheart. I bet he draws lots of attention heart My Huckleberry's amp was trauma induced, I do not know the differences between them but please just love him and keep pawsitive thoughts! I have known people that were given 6 months to live and they lived 14 years. You just never know so please don't get disheartened. Pawrents like you and many others in here work miracles with their furbabies every day! It's amazing what love can do smiley

Good luck to all of you!

What's funny is that he has a twin sister and her name is Mojo. Here is a pic of them shortly after Sebastian came home from his surgery.
