I just love how that rolls off the tongue, inspiring heroic images of Saturday afternoon serials.

Rix is a survivor of the Yulin dog meat festival in China, and was rescued from a cramped cage on a truck headed to the slaughterhouse by some brave and loving people who I can't be more grateful to. He was wounded, so skinny, and his left hind leg had been very badly broken at some time and left to heal on its own. We're not sure how it happened, but it's not hard to imagine all kinds of scenarios, which I'll leave to you. The limb is useless now, and hangs as dead weight, getting in the way and causing some chronic pain that he won't often show but I can see.

He spent some months in hospital before going home with a series of foster carers in Shanghai while the rescue group over there tried to find a permanent home for him. After a year, a rescue group here in Ontario, Canada, took him and a couple others from his group, and it was a Facebook post I saw from them that first got my attention.

You see, I am a retired paramedic with post-traumatic stress disorder, and have been struggling with its effects for many years. I saw in this little guy and his story a colleague, a peer, and maybe a new partner. I'd thought about a service dog that I could work together with, a mutually beneficial relationship, but it wasn't a fancy vest or doggie access to Walmart that I really needed. What I needed was this fella, and he needed me. We met on a bright and warm Saturday afternoon in early June, maybe two weeks after he'd arrived here in Canada, and he has not left my side since.

He slept through Canada Day fireworks that had me hiding under my pillows, and right now is napping while a thunderstorm rages outside. He is so calm, and if he was any more laid back he'd be wearing Ray-Bans and smoking a big fattie. He is teaching me his Zen ways in return for belly rubs and kibble.

He gets around fine now, has adapted well to using three legs, but because of the injuries and potential for future health issues and trauma, we're going to have the disabled leg removed. He has amputation surgery scheduled for this coming Wednesday. As sure as I am that he'll be fine, I will be a mess.

Some fine friends pointed me to Tripawds and I've been lurking for a bit before finally deciding to register and post this Hello World story. I've gleaned some ideas and encouragement already, and hope to glean much more in the future!

Rixriley, welcome! We are so glad you decided to join and tell us about the amazing Rix. Your story had me chuckling and smiling, you have quite a way with words! Thanks for starting my day with a smile laughing

Rix is a survivor and so are you, what a perfect match. We are quite familiar with the terrible Yulin Dog Meat Festival. One group that seeks to put an end to it, DuoDuo Project, is very special to us. Thank you for bringing Rex into your life and saving him from those horrific conditions.

By the way has the surgeon said anything about Rix's candidacy for using a prosthesis? Oftentimes dogs with leg problems like his are good candidates because much of the leg can be saved and utilized as an excellent prosthesis attachment point. Just wanted to throw that out there since this needs to be considered before the amputation.

We're so glad you're here and look forward to following your journey.

Hi Jerry, thank you so much for the kind words and the welcome. I will look up DuoDuo, thank you for that, as well.

His surgery was arranged prior to his adoption (of me) by Carter's Forever Rescue & Sanctuary, and they assured me that they got a couple of independent opinions before making that choice. Although I haven't seen the x-rays yet, I've been told the injury was pretty substantial and the way it has healed makes complete amputation the best bet for his future. Also, I think that because he's already adapted to using only the three legs, a prosthesis might be more difficult for him. I did think about that, as well as rebreaking and setting the leg, but it seems neither is a better option.

Here's a snap from after his rescue:

And a little clip I made just the other day (hosted on Facebook, not sure if it will show up):

WOW!!!! This is a beautiful story of two Souls who had each other's name stamped on their hearts the daynthey were born!!heart Elements of heartbreak overcome by heartwarming devotion to each other!!

If you've been kurking around here, you know that dogs live life to the fullest on three legs just fine! Sounds like Rix Riley has ALREADY mastered getting around on three just fine!!

Recovery is no picnic for about two weeks, that's for sure. Yiu are right, that leg is probably very painful, although Rix Riley is cleae a stoic dog and hiding it very well. You will be AMAZED at how much better he eill feel with that leg gone!!

What kinds of questions do you have about the surgery, the recovery, etc? We'll be glad to help in anyway we can.

I'm just so glad you and Rix Riley have formed such a beautiful relationship. Quite an inspirational team!! 🙂

Hugs!

Yaaaay! Oh my gosh that first photo is a heartbreaker but the video...WOW! Thank you for sharing the link. Faceborg won't allow members to share videos on other sites so if you want to make sure more people see Rix, consider starting a YouTube account. Their videos can be embedded and shared anywhere.

Okay, just saw the video! I'm in looooove with this happy, carefree doggy!!! 🙂 Gosh, that rescue picture....poor thing!!! He will DEFINITELY be better off e4ith that leg gone!!

One quick tip. When yiu go pick him up from the surgery, don't even bother looking at the incision site...he sure isn't! He just wants to see you smiling at him and telling him what a good boy he is and that he's going home...home to his FUREVER HOME!!! 🙂

Hugs

That little guy has made me smile every day. I will admit, bringing him into my home was very scary, but we've so completely bonded now, I can't imagine it without him.

I will make him a YouTube Channel, Jerry, good idea! I plan on many more clips like that.

What a sweet pairs of souls you two are! I love that video - he is going to get around great after his surgery! And bless your heart for taking him. It is going to be so wonderful to watch him as he learns he is safe and finally home.

Sally's advice is spot on - when I picked up Jack, I didn't look at her missing leg. I kept an upbeat calm voice and just told her how happy I was to see her. She was confused, but I could see her soften as I chatted to her.

I will probably not have too much of an issue with the incision site or the missing leg, but then again I might, so I will hold onto the advice when I do go pick him up. I generally don;t have any issues with medical stuff, but this is my little buddy!

Also, I created a YouTube channel for him, and tried to post a new video in this message, but got an error message:

So here's the direct link:

EDIT: Okay, the direct link shows the video. I'll get used to this, I promise!

Yup, iFrames are not allowed for security reasons, and not necessary. Simply paste any Youtube  video share link in a post and the movie will auto-embed! way-cool
