Hello, I have a 2 yr old boston terrier named Petie. He has a grade 3 luxating patella which is causing him pain. The problem is his leg is kind of deformed from bearing all the weight since he had his leg amputated at 8 months, I think his bones were just still soft and couldnt take it, now his leg is bowed really bad and straight up and down, no angle at all to it. He originally lost his leg due to a grade 4 luxating patella surgery that failed. I am worried if we did surgery on this leg because it is so mis shapen that it will fail as well. And honestly we got an estimate for $3500 and that is just not easy for us. I have been looking into many things, Carts, braces, surgery etc. He doesnt appear to be in pain all the time but any time he runs fast or tries to play with our other dog he screams out in pain when his knee comes out and its so painful for him. I just dont know what to do =( I am really hoping some one has been through this same type of thing. thank u =)

You are too sweet, thank you. Yeah i spent hours on here last night and read every patella issue on this sight, everyone elses dogs seemed like there leg was in good shape other than the patella and im just worried peties leg just cant handle it, nor heal properly.. OF course vets are saying he needs surgery but honestly i feel like a lot of times they just want the money. Im so traumatized with the surgery route due to our last issue with it. it did not go well and I feel bad for petie, We love him so much, we have 4 kids who just adore him and he adores them. I Dont know what to do  =( I will take some pics of his leg tomorrow and try to figure out how to post them on here, Im not real smart with computers lol

Hi and welcome, I'm so sorry about Petie's knee. My best advice is to keep calm and get another opinion from a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. If your original vet wasn't one, that could be a factor in why that surgery didn't work out. Yes, experts cost more but in the end they save everyone such grief. If your vet is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon then it still doesn't hurt to get another opinion. In this case I would, if possible, seek out the orthopedic department at your nearest veterinary teaching hospital. Schools are awesome, they have the most advanced practices and technologies and they're motivated by research, not necessarily profit, which keeps costs down. There are trade offs (you won't get personalized care the way you would at a private practice) but we've always had great experiences with them. If you're in the U.S, what state are you in? I can help you find your closest school.

Another thing is, have you talked to your vet about your financial ability to cover this? If you're thinking of having the same vet do this surgery, they may be willing to work with you on the cost since the first one failed. There's also Care Credit and we have a great Financial Resources list in the "Resources" section of the menu you see up top at the page here.

I hope this helps.

Sorry about all of Pete's issues, Chelsea. Where do you live, btw? Just in case it's a viable option there is a low cost vet in Richmond, Va.

My Lexie also has a luxating patella (different situation) and the PT vet recommends a brace, so we're looking into it. You obviously pay more for the custom ones but they're more effective than the off the shelf ones and she thinks it would really help Lexie. I'll see if I can find the company name and post it for you.

Think you would need to go to a local PT to get Pete measured and evaluated, and given what he's dealing with it may not hurt to see one anyway.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.

I live in Oregon, The first surgery he had that led to his amputation was at the teaching college. But it was performed by a professor. Thank you for the advice =) I have looked into braces but was unable to find one for luxating patella, tons for ccl but not luxation. if you could get me the name that would be great.

Not quite. But close! smiley

There are two two issues with your post:

1. The link must be to a valid image file, meaning the Image URL must end in .jpg or .png.

Here is the image file link you pasted:
https://www.fac.....d47d0db769

2. We would gladly embed the photo for you, but Facebook says the "content is unavailable". This means that the photo or album is private. Facebook photos must be publicly viewable for them to display outside of Facebook, or for us to embed them for you.

Hope this helps!
